I am also one of the migraine sufferers that gets the 2 day headache right before my period. I have tried everything!!! My neurologist gave me SUMATRIPTAN and in a half hour my head is gone!! I have never once had to take a second pill! It's only a 50mg dose. With my insurance I pay $10 for 9 pills so it's not the cheapest but it works!!

Take an iron supplement. You lose a lot or iron during your period and low ferritin can cause migraines!
And also yes, get some exercise. A brisk 1/2 hour walk 5 days a week is enough to make your period more mild.

I sometimes get headaches before my period, more of a migraine headache and then headaches immediately after my period, that make me feel so tired and drained I am unable to do anything. I work out regularly and eat healthly. Recently, I have been taking iron supplements when coming to the end of my period. Sometimes this helps, but not always! I am convinced it's hormonal, so I just have to put up with it... I try to get plenty of rest during and after my period, I find that this helps me and I also drink loads of water..

I also get very bad period pains every month.. I was told that they would ease off after I had children.. that's an urban myth.. the pains are still with me, every month...it sucks being a woman! thank god for ibuprofen...

I am 43. I get a migraine almost every month for 2 days. It usually starts the day I get my period. This has been happening for about 6 years now. I am on low hormone birth control pills, but I don't think they are the cause seeing as I've been on the pill since I was about 25. Mine almost always occur on the left side of my head, over my left eye, behind my left ear and sometimes my face on the left side will hurt. I can feel my pulse throbbing in my head. My left eye also swells up and tears a lot.

Most of the time meds don't work. Each month I have to alternate between Advil Migraine and Excederin Migraine to see which one will actually work. One month one will work, the next month it won't. I wait 4 hours before I try the other brand. Maybe it's the combination of both that finally make the migraine go away?? Not really sure because some months, nothing helps. Sometimes when the pain is REALLY unbearable, I get a hot washcloth and put it on the left side of my face and massage my head where it is hurting. This only temporarily relieves the pain, but some relief is better than none.

Mine is on my left side too. Sometimes it feels like an earache and my eye waters too. I've been getting headaches before and after my period since 2002 (32 years old) I am 43. After my period are the worst ones! I would use a hot water bottle and try to rest, but it's hard to do when you work full time. I try and work out but I'm only able to do it 2 weeks out of the month. If I force myself to workout during my cycle right before and after (2-3 days after) the headaches/migraines get worse. It's very frustrating to say the least. I am going to a compound pharmacy to get my hormones tested (I'm fed up) and determined to get this dealt with once and for all. I use Maxalt for my migraines. Very expensive and the Tylenol I go thru every month scares me to think what it's doing to my body. I will let you know what I find out about my hormone test. I'm told it will take a month for the testing and then results shortly after. I'm keeping my fingers CROSSED! I can relate to what you're going thru. It really sucks. I'll keep in touch.

This message is for the 39 yr. old lady with the dizziness/headaches who injured her sacrum. I highly reccomend that you see a NUCCA chiropractor. Your neck is misaligned and that is why you are suddenly getting dizzy. This same exact thing was happening to me and my NUCCA doctor has completely helped me. Look at ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed. Nucca can help with migraines in general though. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I am 40 and just had 3 children in the past 4 1/2 years. I feel that ever since having my children, my hormones are doing something different before and after my periods b/c I too have horrible headaches, dizzyness and feelings like I can't focus on anything for about 3 days before and after my period. I am normal weight, exercise 3 days a week. I used to excericse 6-7 days a week before kids... wondering maybe if thats what made the difference ??

i too have this problem, just lately.  I turned 48 and believe it's hormone fluctuations.  So, I agree with exercise, but not motivated at times, so i do take motrin, no help, tried tylenol with codeine from OBGYN. that helps.  use to be two days before period and now it's two days after.

started getting what i think is 'hot flashes' not sure but i sweat for no reason is that what it is?

anyone knows what to do about hot flashes and postheadaches after period? tks

Wow, I thought it was just me.  I'm happy and sad that there are so many like me out there.  I am 44 and I have gotten headaches before and after my periods since I started having periods.  Many people are right that there are few medications out there that will help.  But I would like to share some of the things that I have found.  I know when a really bad one is coming because I begin to have one or many of the following symptoms: dizzy, fatigue, yawning, slight pain in my neck or jaw (like if I was chewing gum too long).  If I can catch myself at this point, before the head pain begins with two Excedrin migrain tablets the headache hardly ever comes - but that is not a sure fire method for every month, and there are times when the headache will come without symptoms.  Once the pain begins there are a few coping strategies, first is to try and relax and empty your mind (this is hard, especially if I am at work or my kids are home).  Take two tylenol - it will not make the pain go away, but it will take off the edge so that you don't want to kill yourself.  Put a hot washcloth over your eyes and nose, this will decrease sharp pain.  I have found sometimes that laying down makes the pain worse, try to prop yourself up with a ziplock bag of ice wrapped in a tea towel on the back of your neck.  I have fallen asleep with the ice bag and woke up with no headache.  Ok, this is going to sound weird, but where ever the headache is the most painful (i.e the right or left side) have someone massage the opposite hand.  So if the right side of your head hurts, have your left hand massaged (fingers and between thumb and index) IT WORKS.  Hope this helps, stay strong.  and if you feel like getting sick, let it happen it will shorten the time of the headache - but drink plenty of water and eat saltines and sip chicken broth.

Hey there, my first ever post!  But I suffered with headaches/migraines for around 10 years that came on the day of my period and lasted up to four days.  Really bad in the morning and up until lunch time, then easing off in the PM, then coming back on overnight.  Headache pills just wouldn't touch it.  GPs no help.
Went to see a hormone specialist about a different issue, mentioned the headaches and she said right off - this is because when you come off the pill each month to have a period, your estrogen level drops probably faster than your bod can cope with.  She took me off the pill anyway cos I was 40 but I was pretty scared I would get a 24/7 headache so I researched taking food supplements.  Guess what?  Soya beans produce a natural estrogen when you digest them.  So I started having a handful of roasted soya beans as a snack in the afternoons and in the week before a period, swapping a couple meals over to tofu instead of meat and hey presto, the headaches eased up.
This won't be the answer to everyones problems but soya is a healthy alternative to meat anyway, so there's no harm in trying to see if it works for you too.  Best of luck.

I have been getting these headaches as well and it started happening right afte i had my daughter.  I do believe it is becaause of a hormaonal imbalance which has aslo affected my blood pressure. Everyone please check your blood pressure at the timne that you fee this intense headache. It may well be an elevated blood pressure that is causing the pain. If that is the case use pain medications do not work. you would need to get an HBP medication to lower the pressure and reduce the tension. Although i still get the headaches it is not as severe as before since i have been taking the medication. Essentially i would prefer not to be on these drugs but for now its the safer alternative. hope this helps
