Hello, my brother was in a car accident last week, and was just released from hospital (after 8 days). He suffered a basilar skull fracture but not really any other injuries (just scrapes and bruises). I'm not sure if this is common or not because it was a very serious accident. Anyway, The doctor said it would take anywhere from 4-8 weeks for him to heal completely and go back to work. The bruises are almost completely healed, and he just has a bad headache. How will we know when he is ready to go back? He thinks it will be sooner than 4 weeks but the doctor said no. And he isn't allowed to drive until approved by a doctor. Has anyone had experience with this? What does it mean to be "healed" of this skull fracture? Is it just when he feels better or is there more to it? Any advice/comments are appreciated. We have asked doctors so many questions already and are just unsure about the healing process. Thanks in advance,
Nicole
My son had the same injury and it has taken him two and a half years to get back to almost normal. His docotor has repeatedly told us that it can take up to three years for anyone with this injury to return to normal activitites. My son wasn't even allowed to participate in PE in school for a full year! The doctor has just recently cleared him to play hockey again and I would definitely make sure he goes to see his docotor BEFORE returning to any physical activities.
