hi
i'm on day 7 post my tonsillectomy and i have these black/grayish tissue/scabs hanging, is that normal? the pain has been extremely excruciating.
my tongue is still very swollen, is this normal too?
thank you

Hi Manuka honey,

The process of healing after tonsillectomy is not very pleasant one. However there should be pain in the throat but not an unbearable one. Are you able to sleep at night?

Most cases of postoperative care take from 2 to 4 weeks. You are still at your first week and I am sorry to say but, you will have to bare this week or two more. In the second week you should experience less pain and less swelling also. The doctors suggest the diet to be normal as before the surgery, but not everybody is able to do this. Most go for the soup diet.

Also if you notice any blood in the mouth you should check with the doctor if everything is ok.

As for the scab, It's totally normal. These are just where they removed the tonsils, and the way you get them out is that you cough both of them up, similar to a loogie. Unfortunately, this is where the big pain comes from. At least one should be coughed up by your 9th day.
