I have been diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and given an injection of Methotrexate last Thursday. The initial bleeding was heavy with clotting and then lightened up by Sunday. Very early Monday a.m. I got up to use the bathroom and a lot of bright red blood ended up in the toilet. I am only spotting in between potty trips but when I go, I end up with very bright red toilet water. Is this a normal side effect to the Methotrexate or should I be worried? P.S. I also have a call into my physician just in case.
yes actually, what you are experiencing is quite normal! I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy 7 weeks in. I had tested positive on a HPT on 8/14/08 on and the 20th began experiencing heavy bleeding...soaking a pad every hour. I was given an U/S and confirmed the pregnancy had implanted in the tube. Upon receiving the MTX injection, I experienced heavy cramping/ pain and bright red blood followed with what looked like black clotting. The bleeding lightened up after a second injection (my HCG levels were topping the charts at 9000) and the pain subsided as well. However, yesterday I began experiencing the bright red blood again. A visit to the doc showed a steady drop of my hcg levels and all looked well. As long as your still showing HCG levels above 5, your body is still under the impression that it is pregnant. The reason why women will bleed during this time is because their uterus is trying to expel the botched pregnancy and with the pregnancy being in the tube, the uterus cannot successfully end it, thus being the reason MTX is administered. It isn't uncommon for the bleeding to lighten if not stop. This is usually due to the fact that the uterus is building up another lining and will shed it accordingly. As long as you are not soaking a pad within an hour or experiencing sharp pains on one side, sharp pains that move across your stomach, or heavy cramping, you should be just fine! If you become concerned, contact your doctor immediately!
