I have been on birth control pills for about 5 or 6 years now and I have missed my fair share of pills. Recently I missed a pill and started my period due to a missed pill. 2 days later (still on my irregular period) I started bleeding uncontrollably for about 5 hours STRAIGHT! I went to the emergency room where they took blood for all sorts of tests. They then sucked a lot of the blood out through a tube. The tests proved that I was not having a miscarriage and the doctor concluded that all of this was due to the missed pill.
(2 days after the ER): The bleeding has gotten better (I bleed large amounts, with clumps still, but only for a short period of time). Now I am having severe cramping in my lower abdominal. I went in for a doctor appointment today, I came out with the same result (missed pill caused all of this). I am convinced that there is something else wrong with me. How can one missed pill cause 5 days of heavy bleeding and unbareable cramps?? I made an appointment to get an ultrasound to triple check "my area."
I've always had horrible cramps and bleeding heavier than anyone I know but the cramps I am experiencing now and the amount of blood is shocking...even to me. The amount and size of the clots are what scare me the most!

This same situation happened to me a few months ago. The doctor said it resulted by simply forgetting that one pill. But regardless, I did have a vaginal ultrasound and intensive blood tests done. Everything came back normal except for my iron levels which were a bit low due to the loss of so much blood. I was put on an iron supplement. Eventually my period went away and I have not forgotten a pill since!
