Hey everyone,
So this post seems to be all over the place, and misinformation kind of bothers me because hpv is probably one of the scariest things that has happened to me because there is SO much misinformation out there.
I'll give you facts first. Hpv is a virus, it NEVER leaves your blood stream. However IF you have condyloma, which is the warts that come with some strains of HPV, you can get rid of them. Once they are gone there is no guarantee they will never come back, it is reported they could come back with depressed immune system (HIV), elevated stress, or possibly during pregnancy. this is because the virus never leaves your blood stream, so during these bodily changes it may present again. Kind of like getting shingles after you have already had chicken pox. It is a virus so always in your blood and shingles may present later in life.

You CAN still sleep with the guy who gave you hpv. He has the SAME strain of HPV as you, and you can not keep getting that strain again. However, if you choose to have other partners you can get other strains of hpv. Please keep in mind there is no proof that condoms keep you from getting hpv and it is pretty much known that it does not prevent transfer. The information about 80% of people getting hpv is TRUE. however there are two different strands, and if you get the strand with condyloma, it is much more painful. Treatment options, freezing, burning with acid, in office surgery with local anasthesia (painful), laser vaporization which is surgery with general anasthesia, and leep.

i wish anyone who has hpv the best of luck. even though it doesn't seem like it now, you are lucky it's not something worse.. no cancer, no deadly diagnosis, just a really hard challenge in your life. Ive had 3 surgeries and am scheduled for my fourth (this is rare-- don't think you will be in the same boat). I'll be honest its not easy, but never blame yourself, no std especially hpv should be looked at as "your fault" or a bad thing, even if you are SO careful, but can still get it, so don't let anyone tell you differently.

Good day all,
Speaking from experience, self education, and numerous consultations, I must say that HPV is a virus and you will never rid yourself of it. :'( Sorry! My doctor compared it with Chicken Pox. Once you've had it, you go through the motions, treat it, and the serious side effects don't come back.

However, there are 100's of strands of HPV and if you have been infected by one strand, you are more subseptable to contracting and not being able to fight off another strand. This means, if you, like I, have High Risk Strand 16 HPV and you have sex with someone who has Low Risk strand 8 HPV, it is more likely that the virus will over power my immune system. In some cases, people who are exposed to HPV fight the virus off and never show symptoms!

High Risk HPV is associated with CANCER. Low Risk HPV is associated with genital warts. You can get these warts in the vaginal, anal, and oral area of your body. You will have to have them lasered or frozen off. And they do come back! Luck you, you don't have Low Risk HPV. So to answer your question, after you have had the LEEP procedure, you can continue to have sex with your boyfriend. If you guys are not exposed to a different strand of HPV, you guys will be fine!

I hope that I have been helpful. I know when I found out that I was HPV positive with CIN III cells, I thought my life was over! But I am still here and happy to have overcome this mountain. Now, keep in mind people, HPV has not been fully researched and it not totally understood! So we learn as our doctor's learn! :-|

someone mentioned that you should break up with your boyfriend blah blah blah blah blah

for everyones information it can lay dorment for up to 10 years...
you will never kno if the male has it.. unless you have it and sleep with that male....

and you will never kno who gave it too you.. unless you've only slept with one person..

so don't dump your boy friend .... do wat you want... you can be your own person.. and askin for advise over the net isn't a good idea either...
people lie and make sh*t up all the time.. you'd be BEST to go to your doctor... you can't trust the internet and wat people have to say...

go to a gynaecologist, family doctor, or a specialist....

I appreciate your thoughts. I however was a Good Girl and have only had sex with 1 man, my husband. I was just diagnosed with HPV/Genital Herpes. Apparently HPV can lay dormant in your system for over 10 years and is just now rearing it's ugly head. I am extremely distraught by this new diagnosis. For 30 years, I've been so proud that I saved my self for one man, and now I have a sexually transmitted disease. No one is safe. All the times I shared with people that I was so proud that I'd only had sex with one person, my husband... I am just so embarased, so ashamed, so dirty. 30 years I thought I was so pure, waiting until marriage, being only with one man, and now an STD. I'm done.

My boyfriend gave me the hpv that causes gential warts. They come and go and have been like this for about 2 years now. He got the warts aswell and i tryed to stess to him how serious it is, but recently i found he is having sex with other women and not telling them. Is there anything i can do to help these women?, so they dont have to suffer as much as i did. Also is there anything i can do to prove to him how serious HPV is?

Thank you

ummm there are no 'symptoms' with hpv!! Ur immune system fights the virus off and once it fights it off..u may come in contact with other types of the virus...but not the same one as ur body becomes immune to it! please stop giving false information to ppl unless u really know what u are talking about!

not every kind of hpv gives you warts... why dont people know what they are talking about before they post?

Actually it can go away on its own and low risk virus is related to warts and high risk is no warts - more likely to one day cause cancer if not closely watched.

Also - HPV can lay dormant for years and then just spring back into life... If you do enough reading online you can find all the facts...

100 strains - 30 of them sexually transmitted - I think 6 of those 30 are warts... the rest high risk.

MEN - they can't tell if men have it - yet we get it from men and it is sexually transmitted? I don't get it. How can they say a man gave someone HPV if they can't even tell if he has it?

To me - that doesn't seem right.

Oh well.

There is a strand of HPV that causes genital warts; however, just because you have an HPV does not mean you have genital warts. I'm not saying I know everything about HPV, but I do know I have one and that having it doesn't mean I have warts. Also, If I never had a pap I wouldn't have ever know I had one either. I had a recent pap smear come back abnormal. I had to get a Colposcopy, to see what levels the lesions I had were at to get proper treatment, they found this out by a biopys, they took samples of the abnormal cells. I was able to see what the doctor was doing because his microscope had a monitor attached to it because sometimes they train new doctors there, so I had the option to see what was going on. I thought it was kind of neat. I just had laser surgery about 3 days ago, with a small LEEP, because some of the abnormal cells were spreading to my uterus. My doctor and I discussed my options and what not because I am 21 and have never borne children he said that he would do the least invasive procedures. I wrote up a list and finally had the courage to ask all the question on my mind on the post up doctors appt before my surgery. So, I encourage any female with questions to just ask them, because once you do it its not so bad or embarissing. Also, I know that my body might have been able to clear it up on its own but I didn't want to take the chance. My doctor and I discussed how I need to monitor this for the rest of my life. I have been getting anual paps since I was 17 because I chose to be sexually active, so I knew it was up to me to take care of myself. I'm glad that I have because like I said I didn't have any symptons so I wouldn't have none otherwise. Like other ppl have said, guys can't get tested and moreoften than not have no symptons. I plan on getting the Gardasil Shot because it protects against 4 strands and yes I already have a strand but if I can do something to not get those other 4 than well why not. I just wanted to share this with anyone looking for information because I was scared out of my mind when I found out I had an abnormal pap.

WOW. A lot of this is ridiculous. I spoke with a physician today (A SPECIALIST), after having been diagnosed with HPV Type 16 and mild displasia of the cervix. In young women (especially below age 21), HPV can be eliminated from the body by natural means. A weak immune system, smoking, and any other unhealthy habits factor in to the rehabilitation of your body towards the virus. I am 21 and though positive for a high-risk strand of HPV, will go untreated for at least another year because at my age the majority of HPV cases eliminate themselves over the course of 6 months. That being said, Only SOME strands of HPV cause warts. I have HPV Type 16 and NO visual symptoms. The only reason I caught it was because I volunteered to have a new technique in HPV testing performed.... a technique which identifies individual strains and will be used on a national scale in the years to come. I think this doctor knows her stuff.

%-) I just had the LEEP procedure done 3 weeks ago. I feel so stupid for not fully understanding what the procedure was all about. My question is.....How long can you have HPV without knowing? Does it always show up on a pap smear?

OK, I have read a lot. I am a researcher by profession so I think I know to read research data. HPV is the cause of both warts and cervical cancer. But there are lots of strains... some cause cancer, some cause warts, so the problems your HPV causes will depend whether you have a high-risk (cancer) strain or a low-risk (wart) strain. I also have genital herpes and have read about that too and it is similar to but different than HPV. Once infected with HPV you will always have anti-bodies to it, so it will be somewhere in your body. But like people have said 80% or more of people have them and most have no HPV symptoms. You should not however, have the manifestations of HPV - either bad paps due to cervical changes or warts once your body "clears up" the virus. Similar to herpes in that, just because you have the genital herpes virus does not mean you have any outbreak - I was infected with that 10 years ago and have not had an outbreak for years - when I was first infected, though, I had outbreaks all the time for the first year. I am now newly infected with HPV and having lots of issues - just had my colpo today - but the antibodies to HPV will always be in my body - that means I can't get infected with THIS STRAIN (I have high risk 39) again. But I can get infected with a different strain and since there are lots of them I could get it again. Still, just because I will always have the HPV 39 antibodies in my system does not mean that I can't clear the immediate HPV infection from my cervix if the cervical tissue that contains the HPV infection is removed - thus, for all practical purposes it is not problematic - just like herpes is not a problem for me because I don't get outbreaks anymore (and it has had no impact on my sex life as I have yet to meet a man who thought that me having genital herpes was a reason for him not to have sex).

So, for the woman who is afraid her boyfriend will "give it to her" again, not to worry UNLESS he is sleeping with someone else and contracts a new strain - then he can give you a new strain. So, if he is honest and faithful no harm to continue to be with him - since you both have the same virus, you can't pass it to each other. I hope you see your doctor though as I and the others here are not a medical professionals so you really should consult one.

I just felt the need to reply add here, that I cannot believe how crazy these replies are. Someone said that HPV has nothing to do with genital warts, and that comment just angered me.
Instead of posting on some forum somewhere, some people need to be talking to doctors. HPV has everything to do with genital warts. However, only certain strains will have you break out with warts. Typically, you catch a strain that either causes cervical dysplasia, genital warts, or no symptoms. I am one of the unlucky few to have already been infected with one strain, and catching another. This is because there is no test for men, and no way of really knowing if they have it or not. And it doesnt always just pass on its own, sometimes your body can't fight it. Like me, I've had it since 2005, and I STILL have genital warts because of it. I also am going to undergo a leep procedure because of an HSIL legion on my cervix and another on my back vaginal wall. The first pap smear I had with an abnormal result was in 2006, and from them on I have had a colposcopy every 6 months with the same result. Except the last two, which showed a legion on the cervix as well as vaginal wall. Keep in mind though, the leep is because I have been going to the doctor for soooo long without it going away. PRE cancer is just that, PRE. It's scary yeah, but the odds of me waking up tomorrow with full blown cancer are slim.
Also, HPV that causes warts IS NOT herpes.. similiar yes, but they arent the same thing.

it is a virus. just like herpes. it never goes away. you should read more about HPV. You can fight the simptoms and you can take medicine and you won't pass it to other people after the treatment but the virus is there.

The Guest who's post was: "ok, some of that information is wrong.... yes you can get cancer from hpv, yes 80% of women have it. but only some womens body cant fight the virus so they devlope CIN 1 CIN 2 and CIN 3 CIN 1 is PRE cancer....". Looks like the only one who seems to have it right. I HAD the HPV Virus. I am / was a patient at MD Anderson in Houston. I had to become an expert very quick after an irregular pap smear and colposcopy showed cervical dysplasia. I was quickly seen at MD Anderson and had 19 biopsies, the LEEP procedure. I had CINI, CIN II & CIN III. After the LEEP procedure I was seen every 4-5 months for the first 3 years. I was then told since my biopsies were clean, to reduce my blood tests, colpolscopy and subsequent biopsies (if necessary) to once a year. Last week I saw my team at MD Anderson to have my first one year check up. After my colposcopy, my doctor said we have good news. We are releasing you. I was a little confused and asked what does that mean exactly. She, the MD Anderson Cervical Cancer doctor said to me, you no longer have the virus that causes cervical cancer. You are not just cancer free but you are free of the virus. She explained that in some cases, your body CAN fight off the virus. It is not dormant, it is not in remission, it is gone. MD Anderson takes about a pint of blood every visit to ensure there is nothing in your blood either. She said, they don't have a definitive answer but the theory is one of two theories. Number one is after having the LEEP procedure there is so much inflammation that the white blood cells go after the virus for months following the procedure which could result in eliminating the virus. The other is that your own immune system is strong enough to fight off and rid your body of the virus. The fact is, as of February 18, 2010 one of the best Cancer hospitals in the world don't have a clear answer as to why your body CAN get rid high risk HPV but I am proof. So don't let any diagnosis of HPV turn your life upside down (remember, there are only a few strands that actually cause cancer). But don't take it lightly. I would highly suggest taking any irregular pap to a Cancer hospital. Contrary to what many gynocologist will tell you, you can take an irregular pap result to a cancer hospital without a diagnosis of Cancer in your hand. Most gynocologist are doctors of the forest, not doctors of the trees. MD Anderson assured me I did not over react and that coming to a cancer hospital was the right thing to do. FYI I was NOT put under for the LEEP procedure. I was told that is for amatures that don't know what they're doing. I was 100% awake and was numbed. There is always a risk with being put under and an unnecessary risk when it comes to the LEEP procedure. Another important thing to remember. And this I know straight from many Oncology Surgeons at MD Anderson. HPV is not something that shows up in days, or months. It takes years to show up. According to the specialist in the Colposcopy Clinic it can take 10 years or more. So pointing the finger at who gave it to you may be a mute point unless you've been married for 10 or 15 years or have been with one partner. This virus take a long long time to manifests itself. Just remember your body CAN fight it off. Mine did. Mother of 2 small children. Houston, Texas
