Hey guys.

So I really wanted to start this topic a few days ago but I was thinking that it is silly topic. But now, I can see that I should ask you about this and I hope that you can tell me about it.

Well, since my aunt had heart bypass surgery she is totally different. My uncle is saying that she is not the same person anymore. She was kind and nice before, but now she is out of her mind.

Maybe this question will be silly to you but I want to know can heart bypass surgery change personality?

The way I understand it during the surgery there is a short time when there is no blood flow to the brain while they are hooking up the bypass machine. That's the reason most people experience some loss of short term memory afterwards. That's what I miss the most, my short term memory. They have found they can minimize the loss by lowering your core temperature before doing the operation. I suppose the loss of blood flow can affect some people differently.

I know I have changed some but I attribute it to aging. The most noticeable is when I'm driving. Things that used to piss me off just make me laugh now, like the guy who has to cut me off to get in front. That just makes me laugh at the id**t.

I know I wasn't the same for a week or two after the operation but I attribute that to the aftereffects of the anesthesia.

Hey. I really can understand that someone is feeling depressed or to change his behavior a little bit. But I really can't understand that someone can become totally different person. I guess that this is different in all people. But I can tell you that she is like crazy person now, she is not in the mood never, she is screaming and she is jelling all the time. I don't know and forgive me if I am wrong, but this seems like something that some crazy person is doing. Do you have any advice how to change that? How to help her?
Thank you njoynlife for giving us always amazing adivce...

Good day everyone. I have exactly the same situation but I am trying to hide this from my family because I don't want to hurt them. But I am feeling awful as well after heart bypass surgery. Sometimes I wake up and I start to cry or smile - it depends. I don't know why, but I am feeling that I am losing my mind. I don't know is this because of this surgery but it all started since I had it.. Can you tell me is this because of it or I should find some other cause? Sometimes I think that I am able to do something awful to myself. And I don't want that. I am depressed - that is obvious.

Good day everyone.

Sure it can. We had similar topics like this one and a lot of people around me had problems with personality changes after bypass surgery.

To be honest, I am not sure what is going on exactly, but it is very important not to be depressed. Try to talk to someone, try to exercise or try to move around the people.

Also, cardiac rehabilitation is amazing thing and I also do recommend you to try it.

Consult your doctor about it and find out what are the benefits of it.

Good luck and I hope that everything will be fine.

I see this was 8 days ago. I don't know how I missed it.

I suppose a lack of blood to the brain could do many different things even though the most common is the loss of short term memory.

I don't know what you should do to help other than encourage her to see her doctor about it.

Hello everyone.

After second bypass surgery my wife was like a crazy person. She was walking in the middle of the night around the house and she couldn't sleep. When I ask her what is going on, she just starts to cry and she is telling me that she is feeling so helpless and that she is done with everything. She was obviously depressed but I was there, I gave her all my support and now she is fine.

The point is that heart surgery can change a person almost completely, but you need to be with someone and help him or her.

Good day everyone. I am glad that I can share my experience with you. I had four bypass surgeries. After three surgeries I was really OK, I never was depressed, I never had any problems. I was feeling Ok and I was surprised when someone tells me that he or she is feeling bad after surgery. It was impossible for me. But after my last surgery I saw that something seriously is going on with me. I am a male and I was crying all the time. I lost my job because I didn't have any will to work. My sister told me that I need to go to the cardiac rehab and I listened to her. That was the cure!
