Hi everyone! I've had the IUD for 3 years and have had these really bad sharp pains in my uterus area; kinda like someone jabbing and twisting my insides with a knife or screw driver. It's not on the left or right side, more in the middle and the pain can last for about 10 seconds, mainly during my period but can be around any time inbetween periods. The pain started when I got the IUD inserted and I did think it will go but it hasn't and now I think it'a time to get rid of the IUD. But I still want to know what causes these excruciating sharp pains.

I had the mirena coil in 2007/8 and had have anti biotics with it. I had to have it taken out due to excruciating pain in left side pelvis, back, groin down legs etc. pain mainly left side where they did a scan and said womb a little tilted, fallian tube twisted and ovary tucked in wrong side. I have been on controlled drugs since and still in excruciating pain.
In August I went to Florida with husband and daughter to Disney world. All over tv there were adverts from solicitors for aiding women with mesh based inserts into vaginas causing complications in later life.
Some days lie today I cannot stop crying for pain to go or for the agony.
I seem to be in a similar boat as you.

I've read millons of threads and blogs over the years and never felt compelled to respond, but had to share this one!!! 5 years ago I got my first mirena IUD placed into my tilted uterus. I LOVED it at first, no birth control pills, less hormones, and never taking random pregnancy tests since my period was light and irregular after all those years on pills. After the first year, I had occasional but severe and sudden cramping, especially when I was stressed for some reason. I work at an animal hospital so if, say, a bad cat, a bad dog or a mean client came in I would get severe cramps. A co-worker said she occasionally experienced this too (I had talked two co workers into IUD's since I loved mine so much). We joked about carrying our stress in our vagina's! I'd take ibuprofen and it would be gone. The third year the cramping came more and more often and I had constant pain in my left side. Finally scheduled an appointment (this went on for months, I tend to be a tough it out girl) and she said most likely mild uterus infection not associated with IUD. I took course of antiobiotics. Cramping got better, but constant pain in left side never left. Couple weeks after antibiotics I had IUD removed, although they kept saying it couldn't be related. By the time I left the building the pain was gone! I planned on getting pregnant the in a year or so I didn't want to start pills. About 4 months later condoms got old!! Baby girl born end of Nov 2011 and had 2nd IUD placed 5 weeks later. I justified a 2nd IUD for three reasons: 1. My insurance covered it 2. I figured my uterus would be more stretchy after baby 3. I thought maybe I was crazy before; they said it wasn't related to IUD and maybe it was all in my head and my biological clock forced me to hate my IUD....hehe. So, very mild cramping and irregular spotting since 2nd placement. I attributed it to period cramps, and my body getting back to normal after baby, or maybe even incision pain (c-section, breech). Then over the past 4 weeks steady lower back pain and pelvic cramps not touched by ibuprofen. Lifting was uncomfortable too, small things even a laundry basket or small pets at work when I was used to lifting 50 pounds. Then after painful intercourse it was back at the dr. She put me on antibiotic for possible uterus infection again, of course not related to IUD. After 4 days of antibiotics I was feeling worse and started to have that same pain on my left side. I called and they wanted to schedule bloodwork and pelvic ultrasound. I have insurance but a hefty deductible so I politely declined and scheduled removal of IUD later that day. I would've have done further testing if my symptoms didn't subside quickly. But, again, instantly felt better!!!!!!! I can pick up my daughter without cramping. I threw her in the air about 50 times that day and we laughed and laughed!! I even moved furniture that night. Moral of my story is don't tough it out for months and years......be persistent and don't ignore symptoms. Even if you paid full price it's not worth the discomfort. Just trust your instincts and be firm with your doc......good luck!
