I had the mirena fitted 3 months ago for heavy bleeding. The side effects are terrible. Hip and ankle pain. At night I can hardly move I ache so much. I'm 50 and in good health but have aged so much. Low moods and anxiety are terrible. I would rather put up with the heavy bleeding. Going on Saturday to see dr and I want this thing out. Dr made it sound so great but wish I'd done my research

i got mine in, in april 2017; i am facing the same issues. my whole left side hurts like it was crushed by a truck or as if there are arrows all through me.mind you- I broke my nose at bball practice in 10th grade and told everyone i was fine, with my nose crooked as hell and blood streaming down my face. the pain from this tho- if it is because of the mirena, brings me to knees. i have to scream into a pillow to handle it. it's maddening. all tests have come back normal though. so they are just now having it taken out. hopefully in next week. I was also advised to get the mirena because of painful heavy periods. but this has been far worse. I'll go back to bad cramps. at least midol helped that.my gyno made it sound like it would be such a blessing for me. also wish id done more research.. dont let them shrug you off.. mine convinced me it couldnt be that when i volunteered mirena as the cause from the get go. that's when the pain started after all. so just take it out. she said nah, and here i am nearly a year later with no answers and it really has affected my life negatively. I hope you find a resolution soon and regain your health quickly. good bless.

I'm so thankful that I found this site after googling my symptoms. I'm glad I'm not alone. I had the Mirena IUD inserted March 14, 2018 and a week later I started having abdominal pain on left side and ankle pain and swelling which I related to a pulled muscle from working out. Then last week it shifted to my left hip making it hard to walk and when getting up from sitting down. Also, swelling in both ankles and joint pain in elbows and knees. This is in addition to spotting daily since day 1 and breast tenderness and bloated. Plus I feel puffy all over and gained about 4 lbs. I didn't have any of these issues prior to getting the IUD and no cysts. It was suggested to me by Dr. for my heavy periods. I called them to tell them if it doesn't change in a few days since I'm supposed to be getting my period. I'm calling them to have it taken out.

I am going through something like this at the moment. I had the coil put in dec 2015. I started getting horrific pain in my pelvic area about a year in. I was out hiking one day and a short sharp pain had me on the floor. It was hard to walk up right for about 4 days following. The cramps lasted about 4-6 weeks prior to this. I was sent for a scan the relised my stings had gone up inside but said the coil was perfectly placed and I was told that everything was fine. Just got on with the pain and it finally went and everything settled down. A year down the line I have been going through it again. It’s my left side cramping being sick and lightheaded has lasted 5/6 weeks the doctor said he thought it was gastric so went with his opinion and took the medication he gave me. A few days later I got shooting pain now my virgina and it felt really sore. The cramps went from a 7 to a 9 which terrorfied me to be honest. The doctors when I called asked to see me for an exam. I explained there were no strings and she couldn’t see anything wrong. They then sent me for a ultrasound that showed the coil is fine. I am done with it now though and have asked them to take it out. My doctor has said I don’t think it will make a difference as I think it’s ibs. I have to say he makes sound like I am making it up on my head. I feel very sad. I was walking tonight felt pain got in went to the loo and there’s fresh blood. There was also protein in my urine when they did a test but the doctor says it was probably just a contaminant and is not prepaired to retest me.
I didn’t have any issues until the coil went in and feel very isolated and scared by it all so it was nice to read that I am not alone although feel terrible for you all

I had the Merina fitted 12 months ago and my hip on the left side gets so painful I can’t sleep in it + my other joints are going to pot!
I realised it must be the Merina as my sister in law had one fitted 2 months ago and mentioned the other week her hip and joints are really painful. To make things worse u feel like I’m going to have a period more now than before I had one

I’ve had the Mirena for a little over a year now and for the first 5 months it was great had no difficulties. This post is exactly what I’m going through currently. Typically it does happen either before or after my cycle. But sometime is Sporadic. Last night I felt the side pain creep up as I was sleeping and gradually got worse in my lower left hip area shooting across my abdomen. It was so unbearable I was considering the ER. I didn’t think of it being my IUD until I saw this post being that it was the only thing so relatable. And also the left leg numbness I noticed last night as well!

Wish I had done more research but, and I am sorry for this, glad I'm not alone. Just to make things clear, I've never had a child, nor do I want to. Had the Paraguard inserted in 2014. Was told I had a 50/50 chance of it helping me (had already been diagnosed with endo). Got sooo much worse. 2 surgeries for endo later...in July 2016, my Dr's talked me into changing to the Mirena. Was worried because I've never dealt well with ANY hormones but it 'has to be better' right? Hurt at first but, ok. Then great! Then...not long after, my bp goes thru the roof. No idea why (only diff was the mirena, found out later Bout the class action lawsuit concerning that). Fast forward to Nov last yr (just over a yr of having mirena), start spotting. Ok...strange but roll because was told could happen. Then, MASSIVE pain in 'girl parts' through sciatic down left leg. So many Dr's appts, tests and work days lost (and my job because I couldn't drive let alone walk!) Was told I must be 'imagining' things. Now, I'm more hormonal (ready to cry at any time) than I've ever been. New appt on the 23 of May 2018, with a new dr. Hopefully this gets straightened out. Thank you, everyone, for telling your story so I don't feel so alone and now I know there is a precendence. Hope you all are doing better.

OMG… you hit it right on the nose. My first Mirena was placed 5 yrs ago, Not a problem AT ALL and I also LOVED IT. Just got my replacement on Jan10,2022 and I cry myself to sleep and that’s IF i can’t get comfortable enough to sleep. The pain, it feels like my hips and butt is detaching from my legs. I can’t sit too long, stand too long, even propping my leg up don’t work. The only thing that sorta helps is a really hot shower. And it’s all on the left side, I’m getting this c**p taken out, I’ve developed cyst on my ovaries and I also have a tilted uterus ( which was never told to me) until I recently went to a whole other OBGYN 2 days ago for a Ultrasound to see if the IUD was placed correctly, which he claims it is. Idk man, but what I do know is IT’S COMING OUT OF ME, hopefully I can go back to my normal life.

Hello,
I am having the same pain as well. It started a week/2 weeks after I had the Mirena IUD inserted for the 1st time. Did the side pains cease after you had the IUD removed?
This pain has been with me now for about 2 months, and it is a daily pain. Sometimes it is dull, sometimes it is well uncomfortable (intense), and it does make me feel bloated.
Thank you for your help.
