Thank You for your post. I am a tough it out girl also and have had my mirena for 4 years. I am 51, 52 in Feb, which is when my annual OB/GYN appt is and I think that I am going to have it removed. I have been suffering with back and left side pain for 2 years and am also tired of not being able to pick up the grandchildren. Your experiences and testimonies have helped me to make a decision to take control of my body again. My doctor, also denies any related symptoms to the Mirena. I also have insurance with a hefty deductible, which is why I have not had all of the testing done, just TOUGHING IT OUT! No more, it is time. I am going to the Bahamas in March and getting married in the fall and I really want to feel good for both of those happy events in my life.

I have had Mirena since Dec. 2009, and have had no issues with it up until the last two weeks. I haven't had a regular period in over a year, and suddenly received one. Along with it came horrible cramps and pain that goes through my lower back, my abdomen, and my right thigh. I'm thinking after reading all of these posts that it maybe having something to do with the IUD! Has anyone that has gotten it removed noticed any improvement with those symptoms?

I have been compelled to research this topic after the past 5 years of lower back/pelvic pain I thought was from my mattress. I bought 3 different mattresses and nothing ever helped. Until one day it dawned on me that non of my pain started until I got my IUD put in. My pain was SO painful, it felt like I was being poked with a hot poker in my right ovary constantly. I talked to my Gyno about and asked her if I could juts have it removed and get my tubes tied. She agreed. Within 24 hours of the removal - the pain was gone! BUT...now several months later I have this residual pain..it's not the same hot poker pain, but a sever ache in the same spot. It gets 10 X worse Then day before my period and the whole time I'm on my period is agony! I dont know what to do, I know it's related to the IUD- my regular doctor doesn't "get it" My insurance has changed so I cant see my regular Gyno. HELP! If the IUD is out, why am I STILL having such horrible pain????

My gyno also put the blame on intestinal. I had an endoscopy, ultra sound of the gallbladder, ct scan with contrast and I had a colonoscopy done last year so my gasterologist felt no need to do another one and numerous blood work. All come out fine. I had mine in for one year. I had mine removed and my severe pain went pain went away almost immediately. I felt so much better after it was out. I had all of this done after it was removed because even though the pain was gone I started hurting in my stomach, having panic attacks, loss of appetite, and really bad nausea. My gasterologist treated me and said he couldn't find nothing and chalked it up as having IBS. So, I decided to take matters in my own hands and got a second opnion about whether there was side effects that would linger after having it removed. She noticed durning the first set of blood work I still had the mirena in and my white blood count was a little high, the second blood work after it had been removed my white blood count had dropped but was still a tiny bit high, and the third blood test showed it was back to normal. She also noticed on my second urine test that I had bacteria and blood in my urine. So she put me on a antibiotic for a bacteria infection along with a gel antibiotic for bacteria infection. She stated that someone should not be in pain all the time, your stomach shouldn't stay bloated all the time and told me if I had called her and stated these problems to her she would have removed it alot sooner out of me. I am the one that decided to take it out. My other gyno said there was no way it could be the mirena. I am still having a few issues but with each passing day I feel like I am getting a little better. She asked had anyone checked my hormones since having it out and I said no that I had asked but I was always told I was to young (37) and didn't need to do that. So, she has taken more blood and my hormones come out fine. While I was there she went ahead and did a pap smear and vaginal ultra sound. She found a slight trace of endo but she stated that the antibiotic would probably clear that up. Pap smear results haven't come back yet. She also stated you know your body better than anyone else if something doesn't feel right that you need to do what you think is right for your body. She stated it does take any where from 3 to 6 months for your body to get back right after using the mirena and told me I was hopefully in the short rows. Had it removed Sept. 10, 2012. I have never had children. The reason I got the mirena is because I smoke and said I had to get off the pill. I never had a problem with the pill. She asked if they had even mentioned there is a birth control pill without the hormones that smokers can take. I said nope and told her the only reason I chose it because it was good for 5 years. Before the mirena I was a happy person. I was a cold natured person but after the mirena I always felt like I was having hot flashes and needed the AC. Since removal I have gone back to being cold natured. She stated she didn't know with complete certainty that the mirena was the blame for all my issues but she would try her best to get me to my old self. I am ready. Since removal the only time I cramp is during my cycle. I am really ready to be my old self. My husband and I don't want children so I told him he can do the birth control this time and get fixed. There still blaming some of my issues on IBS because I am still having slight pain on my right and left side feeling like it is under my ribs and it may be but I never had that problem until I got the mirena. Maybe a concidence, maybe not.....I just don't know. I pray that you have a wonderful support system like I have. My husband, family, friends, prayers, and the good Lord is the only things that I have gotten me through this time. Sorry if my reply is so scattered.

I have had my Mirena IUD for 3.5 months and at 2 months, I started having all of the symptoms others have described: shooting pain in hip (mine is on right front-side), and then dull pain across my lower back (right along my pelvis, strongest on the right side, less as it travels left). I also have cramping and tingles in my legs from time to time. I take ibuprofen around the clock. It used to help, now it doesn't really help.
My OB/Gyn who I followed up about the pain with said he thought I had a kidney infection or stone. The OB/Gyn did physical exam and ultrasound and could find no problems with the IUD placement or cysts. I too have a tilted uterus.
I just saw a urologist today who said not kidney stone/infection, but maybe a constricted urethra -- which requires minor surgery to correct. I am going to get a kidney ultrasound and pelvic ultrasound next week, then this surgical procedure, if they determine I have the constricted urethra. Honestly, I am skeptical this will help me. I've had one UTI and this pain is nothing like having a UTI. I don't have any of the UTI symptoms either.
I have never had back or hip issues until I got the Mirena. I paid out of pocket for it (not realizing my insurance did not cover it) but after reading all of these posts I might just get it removed, all this pain is not worth $1K birth control. It is very concerning how many of us on this thread have very similar symptoms. I will post again if they find anything interesting or helpful from my follow-up with the urologist.

I will be 52 next month and have had the Mirena for 4 years. The back pain and left side pain has been very bad through the whole time. I did not have problems with the insertion, and I have not had any bleeding since insertion. I want to have the Mirena removed, due to the pain issue, but do not want to have any periods again, the one nice thing about the Mirena. Wondering if I am through Menopause or if I should look into an ablation to guarantee no periods. The Mirena has made me feel very OLD lately, and I don't want to feel this way. Suppose to go to GYNO in Feb for annual.

I had mine out today too - virtually painless - time will tell if it helps my symptoms.

I've had Mirena for over 2 years and have had multiple minor complications all along. 21 years old and healthy otherwise, I had menstrual irregularity up until it was inserted. Decided to have mirena put in even though I've never had a child (as is recommended) due to excruciating migraines and nausea while on yaz and the doctor recommended I never take birth control pills again as they contain estrogen. All along intercourse has been painful occasionally as well as minor spotting. I've had painful episodes of pressure/sharpness on my lower left abdomen on and off for about a month or so which would then go away after a matter of seconds/minutes. After the third or so episode of debilitating pain on the left side of my pelvic area today I decided to go to the physician. She informed me that it is possible that I could have PID. After a shot and giving me antibiotic pills for the next few weeks I have a follow up appointment on Tuesday. Wondering about other forms of birth control as well as any possibly another cause for the pain other than PID...
