Can high level of cholesterol in blood cause polyps in gallblader? I’m 57 years old, male and am overweight. I’ve experienced pain in area of gallblader recently and that pain repeated several times. I decreased intake of fatty food. If I have polyps should I have to have surgery to remove them?
Polyps consist of cholesterol in most of cases. Polyps can be discovered by ultrasound and that way their size can be checked. If polyps are big enough that can block bile duct or cause colic, they should be removed surgically. In fact the best way is to remove whole gallbladder; it would actually be the best treatment. And as one can live perfectly healthy without gallbladder and operation can be performed by laparoscopy, I think that you should not be afraid of it, if your doctor would suggest you to have one. I know that because had gallbladder removal 3 years ago.
I had a polyp taht was 1.2cm in my gallblader. Although 99% of gallblader polyps are either cholesterol or benign, the fact that cancer in the gallblader is a very serious condition, and can be deadly the only way to be sure is to have the gallblader removed. I had mine out yesterday and I had no symtems. it was an incidental finding and i cosider my self very lucky. By the time you have gallblader pain or a polyp becomes so large it causes problems its usualy not a very good prognosis. GET IT OUT. It takes a morning in the hospital and then back home. I had my surgery yesterday and I am going back to work Monday
