Hi, Im a mid 40's male, who used to work in finance, who got laid of in the 2009 GFC and now I work in tourism.  i like my new job, everyone is very social, but one thing that concerned me at the begining, was a lot of guest, (professionals, lawyers, doctors, marketing people etc) like to party when on holiday, and a lot of them like to do a few lines of coke..  Ive been in my new job 2 years, and about 6 months ago, I did a few lines with some of my work colleauges.  It was great!! since then Im doing it about once a month, but we have heap of parties comming up, and Im worried about becoming addicted to the stuff.  It turns out, that EVERY person at my work does  a few lines a couple of times a month, so now its very difficult for me to turn it down.

The stuff we use is not very good, its got heaps of filler in it, but does that mean I cant get addicted?  I like riding a bike, I ride 45 kms usually 3 times a week, and honestly, the endorphine rush I get from that is better than the buzz I get from "taking candy". but its such a social thing , we all have fun doing it together, and so far, no one looks like an addict.. I first tried it 5 years ago, loved it, did it another 2, then stopped because of my job (accountant).. but in the tourism industry, its all about having fun, and im a lot older than all the other people... the only problem i have is I like doing is when I do it, its great... but Im worried about becoming addicted.. so far, we have  a rule, once a month only, which we will break this month, since we will  have it at least 3 times...

Im actually high now..
Hey Leroy.
You can't avoid parties, so the only thing you can do it is to turn it down... I would use an excuse like "problems with sinuses and cocain makes it worse" or sth like that.
You probably can't get addicted from 1-3 times a month, but it is doesn't do you any good either. I was partying about 10 years ago, and was consuming drugs like 1-2 times a month, but really consuming - like going to afterparties and so on... and I managed to finish my master, found a  good job  etc... So I know what I am talking about...
The problem is that 1-3 times a month could quickly turn into 1-3 times a week ... and in this case you do have a problem...
If I were you, I would stick to a bike-high - I know what you mean - because I am a runner - and there isn't a better feeling than finishing training and knowing you did sth good for yourself - and without feelings of guilt....
best wishes!

Quote:Ah, dude, good advice.  Yes, we/Ive toned it down... it actually interferes with other aspects of my life, since we / drink a lot more as well (since it makes you instantly sober.. or your mind at least) ...   but it has been fun... appreciate the advice, I sense it comes from a good place and you obviously have the courage etc to knock it on the head yourself.. good luck with the running... and that amazing endorphin rush that it gives :-)
