Goodness! I tot I was the only freak on this planet. I first realised that an alien was growing in my stomach when I was in university, while taking a test and my stomach just sang for 1 hour. Everyone laughed and I had to get out of the room. It was dead embarrassing.
After that I lived with it and like most of you guys, I am extremely paranoid of quiet places. Didnt help.
I have seen a doc, and he doesnt even care. He just say, its normal. Gosh, no one understands us.
I read online about lactose intolerance and stuff.. it REALLY helps. I kept a log of what I ate and if my stomach makes funny noises, I will abstain from the particular foods.
Some foods which I found to be part of my stomach rock band are:
1. Beans (All kinds)
2. Artificial Sugars (No Coke Light for me anymore!)
3. Milk (I tried to drink a little becoz we all need calcium dont we?)
4. Ice Cream (Contains Milk)
5. Deep fried stuff (Little is fine)
I have also been taking Yakult daily (a japanese health drink that contains Probiotics) and it helps! I think in some countries, you guys get Yogurt with Probiotics. Yakult is made from skim milk and is about 75-100 ml (depends on the country). It is said to balance the bacteria in our digestive system.
Also, I think cutting down on junk food really helps.
Well, lets work together to a "quiet" stomach.

I see this seems to be pretty common. I must admit it feels good to know that I am not the only one. I can relate to everyone. It doesn't matter what I eat or if I eat, my stomach will start talking at any given time. It is so embarrasing. I have not been to the doctor about it yet, but I found a remedy that is working extremely well. I take 1 zantac 150mg
(ranitidine-generic) and 2 gas-x pill everyday. I have been taking them for about 3 weeks now. I am back to my old self. I don't know how long it will last but its working right now. I'm so happy.

I started with gurgling stomach last year. I've been trying different things. I had gone to doctor with full feeling in stomach last year and nonstop burping even on empty stomach. They put me on prevacid. Well that took care of that but then later started to develop gurgling stomach noises throughout the day. Mostly feels like lower intestine. I could feel it going down to my butt lol. Then I've been noticing usually at dinner time I sometimes get bad gas for a while then goes away..again with gurgling stomach. I seem to notice I get it bad when I drink soda or tea. When I make tea i usually add a lot of sugar for flavor. I remmber when I was younger when my mom would make tea and I'd drink it alot throught the day I'd get some bad cramps and diahrea. I think it's happening now more that I'm older. Seems when I cut out the soda and tea I feel okay. I don't get the gas after dinner time. I was tested for HPylori too. Came out negative. I live close to border in Mex so I got to try out some meds I read on IBS boards. Nothing worked. Nystatin was the last drug I tried. Worked for a while but symtoms came back again with drinking a soda. I've been taking some Probiotics and they helped a lot. Somedays I don't even get the gurgling stomach. I think it's all related to diet now that I'm getting older. I no longer have that stomach of steel.

I too have suffered from these embarrasing noises for around two years. I have gone to a gastroentorologist and I am having tests done. I have had an ultrasound of my stomach, an X-Ray, tomorow I am having another wierd test and on Wednesday the doctor is going to stick a camera into my stomach to look around and see what the problem is. He said that he would get to the bottom of my pains and stomach noises and he was very kind and understanding about my predicament.
I will keep you posted as to what happens.

I have this too, in lower 'stomach' although I am not sure it is from stomach? I don't know if it is trapped wind? making these noises, I seem to need to fart a lot. But if I am around people I have to hold it in, therefore I think the air gets trapped and doesn't know where to go - making these funny noises.

THANK GOD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!
I am in the midst of completing my last year of school so of course there have been a lot of problems due to my stomach and the fact that it growls constantly.
It has only recently occured in the last couple of months and at first I thought it was related to nerves because it always seemed to happen in quiet exam situations which is VERY embarrassing. Although it doesn't hurt me it really affected me during that test because I was so worried about what other people thought.
It also happens when I'm not nervous. A couple of times this has happened when I've drank a bit of water without food. I'd eaten an hour earlier but NO my stomach was difficult so I preceded to eat an apple in the middle of a lecture which must of looked rude.
I really hate this and the embarrassment it causes. I aim to try everything people have suggested till I find smething that works.

I've been trolling the internet in an attempt to find answers to this psychologically debilitating condition for almost 5 years, however nobody ever seems to come up with any definitive advice. In that time I've seen two different Gastroenterologits who've prescribed close to a dozen or more prescription medications: 5 ASA (Pentasa, Asacol, Rowasa etc) Bentyl, Levsin, Librax, Carafate, several antibiotics, PPI's, anti-depresants all to no avail. I've also had colonoscopies, Upper GI series and edoscopies. In addition, I've been blood and stool tested for almost everthing: celiac/gluten intolerance, lactose, giardia, worms, aemebic infections etc - all negative. I've also tried different pribiotics (40 billion plus) , antacids and herbal supplements. Nothing works. I know this is not normal because I remember when my stomach was somewhat normal.
My suggestion to everyone here: Let's try to get a gastro Dr. to monitor this board and possibly see several of us so we can demonstrate that this is a very specific problem that should not be lumped under the generic label of IBS. Doctors will continue to either ignore all of us individually or attemtpt to treat us with medications for known IBS conditions. Based on everyone's feedback, this seems to be a very new and unknown problem (all occuring within the past 5 to 10 years). If we can show the medical community that these are not isolated prblems, maybe we can get them to take action. All my doctors have attempted to help me but they don't view this as a serious problem since I'm not in any pain and I'm not in danger of dying. Many of you are probably expereincing similar reactions.
My question to all: Is anyone seeing a specialist, has a relative, friend or aquaintence that can possible help us collectively? At least let's try to figure out where everyone is based geographically so we can begin a logistical analysis - I'm in the Boston area.
With that said here are some suggestions that may prove helpful to some of the people here, however don't get your hopes up:
Gurgling:
1) I did end up testing positive for bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). There is a treatment method with antibiotics that could improve your symptoms but this did not work for me. Ask you Doctor to do a hydrogen breath test to determine if you have it - not many doctors know about it.
2)Antispasmodics - I had limited short-term relief with these meds (librax, Bentyl, levsin etc.). However symptoms returned gradually. Side-effects can be extremely bad - can't stay on them for a long period of time.
Gas:
Try eliminating all forms of sugar including simple and complex carbs for 2 weeks - basically a strict Atkins diet. After that try sticking to the Simple Carb Diet (SCD). This was very effective for me.

I have similar symptoms with the stomach (or intestines ?) noise. They start in the late morning and get worse in the afternoon after eating (it's fine for a while after eating but then starts again).
I see many people here have tried to change their diets: I didn't try it in a major way except taking Activia and Yakult for a while and not seeing any changes.
One thing that doesn't seem to be emphasized though is the psychological aspect. Essentially I have this problem only when I work: hence when I am in a somewhat stressful situation where I am expected to perform professionally. I was not working for 9 months and the issue almost disappeared: it came up seldom. I started working again a few days ago and boom.....it came again out of nowhere. It's really a problem. Has anyone else noticed that they have this issue when they work or study and not when they are at home doing nothing ?

Hi,
I have the same problems too. I used to find my whole digestive system seemed to make gurgling noises, but it's improved since seeing a nutritionist - who advised me to cut out dairy, orange juice and beetroot. However, I do still have the noises high up in my stomach. It happens before lunch normally - but sometimes only 2 hours after eating breakfast, which i'm sure u know can be very embarrassing. I'd love to be able to skip breakfast, but this just isn't a possibility. The worst thing is that i went to a funeral last year and the noises started. I have to go to another one next week and i'm so worried it will happen again.
My nutritionist also told me to take a wheatgrass supplement, linseeds, aloe vera juice and probiotics. These have helped to get rid of all the other symptoms, and i feel a lot less bloated. Now i just need to get rid of the rumbling sounds! I find that drinking hot ginger cordial or chamomile tea helps for about 15 mins.
Please let me know if anyone has anyother tips!

Yes, I have the same problem. I'm a nursing student and have been reading up on this. Looks like there are MANY possible causes for this one annoying symptom: Stress, food allergies, intolerance to gluten or lactose, being an "air-swallower", lack of good bacteria in the intestines, or an irritated colon.
Mine seems to be caused by a combination of these.
What helps me sometimes is deep breathing. Take in a long breath through your nose, and then let it out your mouth just as slowly. Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful place. The more nervous you get, the more your intestines will contract and make more noise (same goes for if you try to squeeze your abdomen muscles, that never works). Also, if you are really freaking out and nervous, tap your two forefingers just slightly behind and below your ear. There is a blood vessel there that will sense the tapping and interpret it as increased blood pressure. This sends a message to the brain to reduce your heart rate and this will calm your digestive tract down a little. It always works for me at least a little bit.
As far as special diets go, you may not see results very fast. It may take a long time because your intestines may have become sensitive or even inflamed from prolonged irritation. Poor tummies... they are only trying to tell us how much they hurt.

I found that taking Vitamin C helped keep me very regular, and almost eliminated these obnoxious loud embarrassing noises. I take 500 mg after breakfast, and 500-1000 mg after dinner [started with 500, now take 1000]. Also, I try to drink at least 2-3 glasses of water a day and eat a fruit or a yogurt. But it's the Vit. C that did the trick. If you find this hard on your stomach, i.e. gives you diarrhea, try the powdered form that is sold in health food stores. You can mix it with water or any liquid and drink it instead of swallowing those gigantic pills. I also take Vitamin B-1 after breakfast for energy, and that seems to help the regularity issue even a little more. I don't take it at night though, because the energy it gives doesn't let me sleep.
Both of these vitamins are water-soluble, which means that your body absorbs what it needs and eliminates the rest, so no danger of overdosing. I sincerely hope this helps someone with this embarrassing problem.

I've been dealing with this problem just like everyone else on this thread. Someone said this problem just came out of nowhere. They didn't change their diet or anything. That's about how it happened to me too. One day I'm sitting in class in the 8th grade after lunch and my stomach makes a slight sound. My stomach gradually got louder in that class, then later in the year my stomach was making noises in all my classes. I'm 26 now and in college and it seems I'm the only person in all my classes who has a noisy stomach. Like others I can hardly concentrate on a test even though I'm an A student. I take online classes when I can, but showing up to physical classes is a necessity for me. Someone talked about taking minerals, specifically magnesium and calcium, on another thread to help calm an overactive GI tract. I just went to GNC and got a multi-mineral called Multi Mega Minerals and also a multi-vitamin called Solotron. Got them both for 20 bucks.
I can also relate to what someone said about the psychological aspect of things. My stomach doesn't make noises nearly as much when I'm at home by myself. It gets way worse when I am uneasy or nervous about something, usually a social situation. The difference is that prior to the 8th grade I could get nervous, but my stomach wouldn't make noises. I've tried probiotics and colon cleanses, but nothing has noticeably helped. I do have a sweet tooth and eat a lot of sugar and several people on this thread said cutting out sugar helped a lot. I will try that next.
