Thanks for your comprehensive posting, it contained more info and sense than I have heard from medical personnel since my op. In the UK the NHS don't want people coming back and costing them money so they just whip things out of the body willy-nilly in the hope of never seeing you again, instead of looking at alternatives to treat the gall stones and preserve the gall bladder. I had mine out 10 weeks ago and now suffer awful constipation (never had it before in my life, so it was a shock!). I have to take a chemical stool softener every night (tried senna, that didn't work), just to get some relief. And yet a surprising lack of help/care/info from all the medical staff - it felt like they were guarding precious 'secrets' that the general public must never know! I'm off to the loo for another heave...!

This was the most helpful post I've read! I was shocked that my doctor had no diet recommendations! I was also shocked & confused as I'd been warned about the diarrhea but never constipation. Sounds like my poor liver isn't doing too good. Thanks for the info!

I had my gallbladder taken out about 5 years ago. I've had major constipation issues. I've done stool softeners dailym miralax, increasing my fiber intake, juicing. Nothing has helped! My gastroenterologist said I have a very effective colon that sucks all the water out. I have taken amitiza and lactulose and they make me feel so sick, I'm tryibg it again, but again it makes me so bloated, the gas and stool have a very strong foul smell. I have never thought of not having enough bile to digest my food. It makes so much sense! Why has my doctor not mentioned this!!!! I am going today to buy an enzyme with bile! I hope it works for me. I'm tired of living this way. Thank you so much for the information. It's the best I've heard and the one that makes the most sense!

Thank you so much for your in depth reply. I became suddenly ill overnight in Aug 2011. Took 2 years to find I had Celiac Disease and when I didn't improve another year to find my gallbladder was filled with stones and inflamed, so we parted company. I'm now finding that chronic constipation and nausea are the Bain of my life. In the beginning I was taking digestive enzymes and bile salts but didn't think they did anything. Having spent the country's budget on pills while trying to get well, I cut out most of my medication. It would seem I need to go and purchase some DE and bile salts once more. Anything to stop the nausea.

Hi, i had my gb removed about 5 years ago, the constipation is as bad now as it was after surgery, the only thing to stop it is to cut out all fried foods and anything with high levels of fat, i can eat anything baked or grilled and im fine apart from sausages, on the odd accasion when ive been hungry ive stopped at the bakery and had a sausage roll, bad mistake, in bed 2 days with gut pain, same with fried chicken, pies, e.t.c, i have figured out that the purpose of the gb is to remove all this fat from your body, after your gb is removed your body can no longer do this, the fat then has to go through your intestine and bowel, and as we all know fat solidifies, this is what causes a blockage as it does not travel through easily, causing constipation and severe gut pain, as long as i stick to low fat im ok, the doctors never told me this before op, i wish i never had it done, some people might be ok but there are more like me, just keep of fatty foods, it really works

It's been 6 months since my gallbladder was removed. For the past 5 months I have had watery bowels until this past month I have had chronic constipation. I can not use the bathroom unless I use a fleet enema. Day 2 after using the enema I start cramping really bad like I'm gonna have a bowel movement so I try and its no response. I have been diagnosed with IBS when I was a kid. I'm just worried cause it seems like everything was ok until this past month and now I can't have a bowel movement unless I take something to help me.
