Have you looked into Atkins diet? I would go to the library and check out the latest book from him and do some research and then ask your doctor. My dad was on Atkins and lost a lot of weight...AND his cholesterol went down! It might be worth looking into. I know from experience, being on blood thinner, all the green veggies you would normally eat; you can't have. So ya, look into Atkins.

Hi curlingkim,

We are all seeking answers on this topic, and i suspect many Doctors are too. I too am a 'dairy' person, and have no wish to cut across the advice of your MD, but as with carbs, dairy has also been condemned as a bad guy. I have never given it up, and I sincerely believe that as a consequence I have been diagnosed (in my advanced years!)-as having strong bones.

Osteoporosis is now a common problem particularly for women, and I feel sure it is because of the vilification of dairy (calcium) foods.
We are advised against certain foods to help resolve one problem, which can lead to another!

I have a low fibre diet now because of intestinal problems (not my DVT)-and I have never been more 'regular' in my life. I cannot shake the feeling that some of the standard advice we are being given is not correct.

I wish you good luck with your situation; as you can see you're not alone!

I just did a search on Blood Thinners and weight gain and came across this site.  I go to the gym regularly and am participating in a weight loss contest at work.   The first week I did really well since it was right after the holidays during which I had gained a lot of weight and had not been working out as regulary.

I was diagnosed with DVT (blood clot in my leg) on Nov 21, 2012.  For a few weeks after my weight was up almost 10 lbs.  I know that part of that was attributed to the fact that it was during the holidays so I was eating and drinking more and could not work out at the same level of intensity.  My doctor also said that I was probaby carrying about 5 lbs of fluid in my leg.

On Jan 2, 2013 I started a weight loss program and lost about 10 lbs the first week and 1/2.  Since then, despite the fact that I am working out and eating less, I am not losing additional weight.  It seems I am up or down 3lbs each week -- so basically maintaining at the same level.   I even tracked calories last week to make sure I wasn't eating more than I thought.  I expected to lose at least a lb this week, but was up 3 lbs :(

I don't know if it is the blood thinner or extra fluid in the leg with the DVT since sometimes it still feels swollen after I workout - which I did this morning before weighing in.

Anyway, this is very frustrating and I am trying not to just give up on my diet due to feeling defeated no matter what.  I was glad to see that others are experiencing the same thing and it's not just all in my head.  I am hoping to be off Warfarin in the next few months.  Maybe the best I can hope for until then is to maintain my current weight.

I have been on Coumadin for 10 years. I also have had weight gain. I have been trying to lose the weight and am having a hard time dong so. All I have read is a lot of people gain weight. Doesn't this make you mad, it makes me mad. I have Factor 5 and must be on thinner for the rest of my life. I started a weight program with a Dr last August. Like the other person sometimes two weeks in a row I would maintain. I had been eating  very low calories and exercising a lot. I wish something could be invented to help us not have clots but not make us gain weight.

Tomorrow will be one year since I've been on cumadin.  Aside from not being able to eat the really good green stuff, I have been more inactive than usual.  First, because of the severe affects on my lung capacity (double PE), then broke my ankle 6 mos later.  But no matter what, I have gained 50 lbs. in this year.  It is SO frustrating!  Even when I am deliberatley eating less, it makes no never mind, I have still had to order new clothes. I am SO hopeful that my Dr. appt on Feb. 13 will end my relationship with cumadin, get my energy back and get rid of this awful weight, not to mention the absolutely HORRIBLE menstrual cycles that go with it.UGH!Thanks for letting me vent.  I am blessed that the people around me have been kind in this journey, including my weight gain.

You are lucky if you can get off the meds. Mine is something I have to take for the rest of my lift. But I tell my self I am alive I can do this. Yes eating makes me nuts..Veggies greens has K and will make you blood think so you have to adjust the meds. I have been getting my blood checked for 10 years now. Either every 2 weeks or 1 month between Labs. I have been exercising and dieting and lost 25 lbs in 4 months. It is so hard to loose weight on Coumadin. I gained when I started the meds also. Hate the meds but I am alive with my family thanks to God. Pray helps me..Bless you in your journey.

I'm no expert but I have been on bloodthinnersince 1991. I wish someone had told me a few things that I'm gonna tell you about protecting your leg. The valves have been damaged from the clot so they need your help to push the blood back up. Elevating helps but while standing, toe pumps work great. Compression is a must, especially if your leg is swelling. I've been on a fluid pill for this for several years. My leg has darkened from the 'reflux' of the vein. I am limited on what i wear since i am embarrassed of the appearance of my leg. Also, it's not just the k vitamin you have to watch out for. Herbs and cranberries also make the bloodthinner not work. I hope this helps you and you are able to get off the pills and have happy legs again

I have been on Coumadin for over a year. 7 months into taking it I gained instant 40lbs. I now am 60lbs. over weight. I have never been over weight in  my life. Are the doctors trying to kill us with this medicine? How can I get changed to another blood thinner?

My girl took coumadin on and off for 5 years from 2000 to 2005.  During a nine month period of consistent use she gained 70lbs.  Her doctors told her that there was no relation between the coumadin and the weight gain which left her confused and depressed.  Doing some research we learned that coumadin is literally rat poison.  We came to the conclusion that the weight gain is the body proctecting the liver by creating fat cells to store the toxic "medicine".  After 5 years she has gotten 20 of the 70lbs off.  She is currently nursing our 1 year old but as soon as he weens she is going to do a liver cleanse. I will post an update on the efficacy of this approach. This board was great for her to see as back then there was very little on google regarding coumadin and weight gain.

I've been off coumadin for 2 months and have gotten 10 of the 30 pounds off. The 10 came off within 2 weeks after stopping and its been the same since.

I am on Coumadin for the second time .... a blood clot in my leg has returned ... I have to see a Blood Specialist to determine why.  But as it did last time the Coumadin has given me several symptoms that I read everyone else complaining about ... bloating, diahrea, tiredness and anemia (after two  hours of waking up I feel like sleeping on the floor) oh and lets not forget weight gain !!!  But these things are not in the books that doctors learn from ....... I am sure that having all of these symptoms must lead to depression while on Coumadin !!!!  Talk about a vicious circle ....

I would love to hear everyones comments, thanks

I have been on coumadin for about 12 years. I did gain weight in the beginning and then peaked, but could not lose any weight. A year ago I also was placed on Plavax in addition to the coumadin. I have ballooned and am not happy with anything! I can't do anything to stop the weight gain. I am so embarrassed and ashamed. Hopefully when I get off of Plavax in a few weeks, than I will be able to lose the weight. I refuse to buy larger clothes! I will be on coumadin forever, Leidin Factor 5.

Thank you so much! I am officially off of cumadin now. Celebrated with a huge Kale salad which included cranberries. 10 days off of it and I already feel SO much better "oomph" wise. Bless you!

The atkins diet is not a good diet at all. Putting your body into ketosis (starvation) is not the way to lose weight . Yes, you will lose weight fast and immediately. Think of your body not receiving food and going into starvation mode. Water and muscle are the first to go since it is a storage area in your body. The body was designed to use these area first as a survival mechanism. Dr. Atkin's ignored this to sell a book and be the hero of weight loss. Once you start eating properly, you will gain weight!
