Hello everyone!

I am also glad to read that many of us suffer from the same thing that doesn't seem to be taken serioussly by anyone, apart from those around us, when we actualy have it.

I had it for more then 10 years now, I am lucky as my symptoms are quite mild, and the attacks are quite random. I get it for few hours after the pressure on my body and it's usually painfull undreneath the skin in my muscles, and swollen and hard at the same time..I have to say that I had it many years ago, and then it's suddenly stopped. After 2-3 years of no DPU it came back. My life is not particularily more stressful them few years ago so I don't understand why it stopped then. I went to the Doctor who gave me lots of antihistamin type pills which I dont wnat to take as I would preffer to learn about the cause of it rather then cure the hives.

I noticed that I get it more oftern after drinking alkohol the night before,
Or when my immunity is down for cold/flu like symptoms.
Recently I started taking circulation type vitamin -Rutin-and i notice it's DPU is coming back regularly, which makes me think of its connection to blood circulation.

I hope we will find the best way to deal with it while communication to each other.

Hello all,

I am a patient with delayed pressure urticaria and i tried many english medicines but no use...But recently i tried ayurvedic medicine and found out that it is more effective than modern medicine against this disease. Infact this disease can be completely cured. but the right medicines are to be used because in my case ayurveda became effective from only one doctor. the disease is called sheetha pitham in ayurveda.

Medicines he gave me are

cheriya aragwadhadi kashayam() + avipathi choornam(purgative)----early morning

saraswatharishtam + swarasasavam + kanakasavam + ksheerini dravakam---- after food at noon and night

dashamoola shadeerasnathi kashayam + khadira gulika ----evening

hingula gulika(Some mercury compound) at night after food and before the mixture of arishtam....to absorb the dirty water in our body causing the disease

This has almost cured my disease within 2 weeks....so am decided to carry on this treatment....Hopefully this will be useful for you....I am from Kerala

I've had DPU for about 8 years. For those of you that have just recently started having symptoms, don't get too discouraged by some of these posts. There are several degrees of severity/symptoms. But from reading these posts (and form my own experience) there seems to be a common theme.

Hives = Less Exercise = weight gain = Less events = Less socializing = depression = more hives ...etc.

It's a perpetuating cycle that can easy get out of hand (and has so in my life at times).

The WORST thing you can do is let it take over your life. Through regular exercise and consistent medication my DPU has become manageable.

I fell into the cycle and got to the point where laying on the couch would leave me in hives. Well... usually one HUGE hive (spanning under my lower knee to my lower back). Finally, after breaking down one night I just said F'it... i'm going to work out! I really didn't care if my hands split open from all the swelling (which they often looked like the would :D). I NEEDED to do something. I was tired of taking a back seat to these damn hives.

The first week was horrible, but luckily the motivation of the previous despicable years of a 2nd rate life kept me going. To my surprise, after about 2 weeks of exercising every day, i started getting less and less hives.

I don't know if it's from the physical repetition, weight loss, sweat, blood flow, etc. but it greatly improved my case of DPU. And by exercise i don't mean a speed walk through the mall. I mean a good anaerobic sweat mixed with some weight lifting (gloves recommended at first). I got too comfortable and only exercised on the weekends for 2 month and it progressively got worse again. Don't let that happen, it sucks going through the first week again.

The second thing that has seemed to help is my new regiment of self prescribed medication LOL.

First of all, if you are buying ZYRTEC or CLARITIN... Stop right now!!! you are paying WAY too much! I use to buy these for 2 years, untill one day while at Costco i came across ALLER-TEC & ALLERCLEAR. The same freakin ingredients, 100X cheaper... no, literally 100X. If there's not a Costco near you, i'm sure there's other generic types of Zyrtec & Claritin that work just as good.

What has worked for me, combined with working out every day, I take 1 AllerClear in the morning, and 2 Aller-Tec around dinner time. Timer the Aller-Tec according to how the drowzieness affects you. Do not stop taking the medication, even if you havn't had a hive for weeks. From what I've experience, there seems to be a delay before it really gets in/out of your system.

TLDR:

1. Exercise (hard) EVERY day
2. A AllerClear in the morning, 2 Aller-Tec at night

DPU first showed itself (literally) when I was 21 years - though it took 3 years to diagnose (after repeat testing for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus). I am now 34 and have had very few periods of relief. As many of the posts have described - it is worse some times than others and can very much limit physical activity when particularly severe. I am yet to fully understand the triggers for this disease, however, and I wonder if anyone has noticed some of the same things.

- As a previous post mentioned, I notice an increased chance of a 'flare-up' if I do NOT exercise regularly. And the poster was very correct - exercise for me means running, weights, etc.
- Increased exposure to the sun seems to help?? does anyone else see this? I think this is why this winter has been particularly rough for me, which brings me to my next observation
- Symptons are much in the winter (which seems odd of an allergy, no?); perhaps its just more clothing touching your body in the winter?
- Symptoms are always worse when I am getting sick - just that increase in histamine level in your body makes the DPU extreme

My symptons are often in joint areas (knees, feet, hands); but at times (like this winter) I will break out over my entire body with welts ranging in all sizes.

I can't seem to get this thing under any control - I too have been on every anti-histamine known to science and I am very wary of steroids for all the obvious reasons. I have moved several times over the last 13 years and stop in at a new allergist in every new town to see if there is anything "new" out there. One that has seemed to at least decrease the duration of the welts has been Tavist (generic form is clemestine fumarate) - it's hard to find and CVS is the only one anymore that carries it (in generic form).

Maybe one day someone will discover the secret remedy here. I just wish I could better understand what causes it to be worse at times than others - if it were just a matter of controling lifestyle habits (diet, alcohol cunsumpton, physical activity level, etc) I could deal with that....it's the not knowing that's frustrating.

hi there,

I'm 45 years old and from my childhood i had always DPU problems with muscle pain, urticaria for some hours, temperature above normal (always >37,2)and i could not wear tight cloths, shoes, rings also i bad medical tests, tiredness and all the other symptoms, Fortunately in winter i was always better, the doctors never found out what was the reason.
Two years ago the symptoms went very bad (i was not able to walk from pain, use my hands , sleep well etc etc). My life was really bad.
I went again to many doctors i did many medical tests. Τhey said many things about lupus, leukemia , rheumatism etc...
I took many medicines but always antihistamines (kestine) were a relief for me.
Finally last year i went, by my own, on a very strict diet free from milk , all milk products and all reservations, as i knew that i have a lactose intolerance from my childhood. I repeatedly mentioned this fact (milk intolerance) to all doctors but they did not thought that it was a reason for DPU.
Nowadays after 1,5 year of diet, i am in much better condition i only have some small urticaria from some foods (ex. fish, delivery food) also i found out that i have milk protein intolerance not lactose one, it is more serious case. All that years my body was full of antibodies for milk protein.
Now i can walk, i can lift thing i can wear more tight cloths, am not 100% ok, i have some pain but my life is much better, never was like this and when i have itching i use some antihistamine with good results.
I hope my experience will help some of you - food was very critical in my case- and it took me over six (6) months to see some improvement, and almost a year to get rid from the big urticaria.
My diet was mostly boiled potatoes, sweet potatoes, greens, herbs, vegetables, chicken and turkey.
Sorry for my poor English and i hope good luck to everyone.

This may take awhile to completely give my history but I feel like I can help many people if some of these things line up with your experiences. I am going to list my allergies, list my symptoms and duration and then my remedies.

1.Penicillin allergy (found out the hard way, nearly died as a child)
2.Sulfa drugs
3.Pine needles
4.Dust (who isn't)
5.Lactose

I was placed on soy due to the discovery of lactose intolerance (20% of caucasians are or become lactose intolerant,75% of African Americans and up to 90% of Asians) I am 36 and until now I didn'tever think about the fact that we (humans) are the only animal that will willfully ingest mothers milk of another animal. Realistically, we are born with the ability to digest the proteins found in milk but many or most of us will lose our ability to break down Lactose with the enzyme Lactase our digestive systems produce at birth. Not to try and ruin the dairy industry but please research the physical symptoms AND systemic symptoms of lactose intolerance.

I may be a little off here on the exact time line but here are my experiences as a child.

I was taken off Soy at some point after 6 or so, I was/am (soy) a hufe fan of cereal and eat alot of it, using as much or more milk in a day as many people drink. Not realizing this could have been related, I started to get the "swellings" at this time I was fortunate that they were mild compared to what I just went through. I would wake up with one of my top eyelids huge, mattered shut and skip school. This would return to normal usually by the next morning. I might have a mildly itchy and swollen palm, or foot, or top or bottom lip. As many of you probably know, after an are is affected it will be left alone for awhile and go somewhere else.

All the trips to our doctor left me with a diagnosis of "Idiopathic Angioedema Enzymatic" or "Unknown hives due to an enzyme disorder" I wore a necklace with a big warning pendant, had an epi-pen and was told I could never donate blood. OK I don't particularly care for needles anyway.

Fast forward to Labor day, 2009. I have more alcohol to drink than I have had in some time ( less than a beer a week is my norm) and have a jolly time with our friends. We get together the next day to cook the rest of the food and finish the drinks. I get bit by a mosquito on my inner thigh, just above my short line. It swells the size of a truck stop steak! I tell myself I was bit by a spider. It goes away as the night goes on and I wake up to a terrible itch right at my left heel at 2 AM. I tell my wife there must be a spider in our bed. I slather it with benadryl and go back to sleep. The next night I wake up in the night with the other heel itching and swollen. At this point I am convinced tha the abyss under our bed must be some sort of insect habitat so in the middle of the night I wake my wife up and proceed to rip the white fabric from the under side of the box springs, vacuum everything and everywhere, change the sheets and eventually go back to sleep. the next day I am working on a step stool with my heels hanging off the step and they both start to itch and swell , dispelling the spider theory. Off to the doctor. I wont waste too much space with details here but my research led me to Delayed Pressure Urticaria, my doc agreed, I was put on Zyrtec 10 mg a day and that was that.

Well I found out exactly what the "Pressure" aspect could do to me. I was raking and mowing and shortly afterward my left hand swelled from my fingertips to 6 inches below my wrist. It swelled so much I could not touch my thumb to any finger. I looked like a cartoon character. To speed this up, I have bitten my tongue and had it swell so big I can barely talk, I have swollen from my eyes to chin and been to the ER twice due to this. It has been a battle, of course all bloodwork says I am fine.

I begin a very detailed look into what I ingest, I had recently started using Slimfast to help shed 20 lbs to get back in to shape. (I hadn't associated Lactose yet but felt I needed to remove any new things from my diet) I ate the same things I always did but I researched possible allergens they might contain. (No peanut allergy). the Zyrtec is working somewhat, the swellings are slower to show up and less severe . After going to the ER and getting dosed with benadryl via IV during a full blown attack I came up with my own plan of attack. I play guitar in a rock band and have missed a practice due to a hand swelling bu was very worried about missing a gig. finally, as expected, I get a swollen right hand the day of a battle of the bands of all times. As soon as I feel the itch though I pop 50 mg of benadryl. 150 is the max for 24hrs. I avoid stress on it and let the other guys load our gear, I take 50 more at the club and 50 more right before we go on. I pulled it off with less than 25% of the swell I would have had. So for those of you that don't relate entirely and respond to my remedy, ask your doc about the 3 stage attack of benadryl at the onset of an attack.

Now, seemingly unrelated to all this is the terrible bloating in my upper chest, causing me to feel every contraction of my heart. This had been occuring for a few years, lots of gas pills to treat it. After research on this subject I learned of the issues from Lactose and amazingly not only did my bloating all but dissappear, the swellings did as well! I started taking the Zyrtec every other day, all was well. I ran out of soy milk and used regular for a few days and bingo! Swelling. I went back to every day on the Zyrtec and back to Soy, or Almond or Rice milk ALL THE TIME now and backed off again on the Zyrtec, now I occasionally have an itch on my hands or feet but no swelling!! I can only make an educated guess that all of this is related so for those of you suffering still with this awful disorder, look into your known allergies if you have been to an allergist, remove them if at all possible. This disorder seems to be due to a constant exposure that eventually your body will not be able to fend off. Check for long term infections, sinus or other that may be causing your body to focus so much energy on that one thing that it is weakened to your other allergies that it may have been protecting you from. I am currently going to every 3rd day with the Zyrtec and I have tested myself with all kinds of activities that should have had me swollen from head to toe by now but nothing. I am thankful and I hope this post helps you as well. I am not a doctor but I welcome any e-mails with questions if I can be of help to anyone with this problem. Good luck and hope you find your remeby!

thanks - sounds familiar!!

I have the zyrtec - but you are missing Ranitadine. 300mg per day with the Zyrtec completely blocks the cells that go crazy during these attacks.

but, i am keen to test the lactose free theory. love my milk, cereal, coffee!!!!!!!!!

cheers

I have had dpu since 2005. I have taken only two drugs that helped and they are methylprednisone 4mg daily as well as xyzal 5mg at night. I have tried numerous kinds of medicine and they all have had side effects that I did not like, and the prednisone side effects are very bad if you use it for a long time not to mention they make me angry all the time. I recently read about red reishi or ganoderma lucidum so I decided I am going to try this herbal supplement way because I want to get off the prednisone. I have been taking red reishi capsules for two weeks and I have had major results, mind blowing. Western medicine is in the business of keeping you sick hence all the side effects from BIG PHARM drug companies. You can try this stuff or not but I havent had hardly any outbreaks since I started this regiment of 1800mg in am and 1800mg at night. Do your research on this stuff, I bought some online but did not go organic and feel that I should have, maybe next go round. TRY THIS STUFF. I WAS DOUBTFUL AT FIRST BUT I FEEL THAT THINGS ARE CHANGING DRAMATICALLY IN MY LIFE. I ALSO STARTED MEDITATING TO HEAL MY ENERGY FIELD, LOOK IT UP IT IS WORKING FOR ME. PEACE BE WITH YOU PEOPLE AND I PRAY TO GOD ALL OF YOU GET SOME BENEFIT FROM WHAT I HAVE LEFT HERE TODAY. ALSO READ ABOUT MYCOMEDICINALS THATS HOW I CAME ACROSS ALL OF THIS, PAUL STAMETS WROTE THE BOOK.

Well, when it comes to me: quite a bit of alcohol!

I am 30 and have recently been diagnosed with DPU. Thank goodness I'm not crazy. All my ex boyfriends said I was a woose. My family said I am a delicate flower. I love my family.

Every time I would mow the lawn or scrub the kitchen floor, my hands would be so itchy and swollen, I would have to use ice packs to stop from scratching.

After doing some research now. I am wondering if anyone has any problems with sex? After having sex, I am extreemly itchy and swollen for days. Therfore, it makes it quite uncomfortable for a while. Usually resulting in a yeast infection (p.s. I'm a girl).

My best guess is that it is related to DPU. Any ideas?

I also get itchy and swollen as a result of having sex. I have just recently been diagnosed with DPU, so I'm still learning which activities are going to cause hives. My question is does anyone else wake up itching horribly? For the past several months I have been waking up in the middle of the night itching like crazy. I scratch and scratch until I fall asleep again. In the morning I usually have tiny bumps that look more like bug bites, not the normal hives. Is this related to DPU or is it something else? I have even thought that maybe we have bed bugs, but my husband is untouched and I cannot find any evidence of the little guys. Anyone else?

Wow! All of this is scary stuff. I have recently been diagnosed as having an allergy to Pork, Beef, Venison, and lamb. I have eliminated all of these from my diet. Some of my symptoms have gone away but the uticaria continues. It usually happens at night. I wake up with hives almost every day for three months now. Sometimes my feet and hands are swollen and itch. I sleep on my side and have hives on my sides almost daily. I realize now that I have had mild symptoms for a long time and ignored them. I have often been itchy and red around the waist when I undress and take a shower (worse when the weather is cold like it is now). I think my allergist is on the right track. It was something he said that led me to research this condition. He did a biopsy of two of those hives this week to test for vasculitis (spelling may not be correct). One web site I read said that this test would also show if DPU is the issue. Based on what I have read on this discussion, I am 90% sure I have this condition. I am currently on a regimen of Allegra and Pepcid in the AM and Zyrtec and Pepcid in the PM. It is not working but the meds have helped me sleep better. When I know its going to be bad, I take Atarax at night also. I can feel it tingling in various parts of my body before I go to bed. As many of you seem to think, I feel this is related to my allergies. My allergist said he did not think I was ingesting anything that was causing my current outbreaks. He keeps saying the word autoimmune disorder. I have listed my allergies above. The only other thing I can think of as a clue to what causes this is the fact that I had asthma as a child. It may not have truly been asthma. My 8 year old daughter suffers from similar symptoms but her doc calls it Reactive Airway Syndrome. She takes Singulair and rarely has any issues now. I have read all of your post and found some things to try. I guess I will give up the wheat beers for now. It seems like this discussion has not been visited in a while except by another newbie like me. I want to encourage all of you to keep posting and updating on any progress or revelations. Stay positive and keep trying to beat this.

hello to all my itchy friends!
I have been suffering from dpu for about 5-6 years now . no medications have worked . this all started when i had a mysterious rash on my shin and a P.A. started me on a cycle of prednisone which not only made me crazy once the cycle was done i developed hives all over my body in which landed me in the ER. since then the are mostly triggered be pressure for long periods of time and become worse when i have my menstral cycle or i am sick. i describe the hives as a small itchy pin head sized dot that once scratched become the size of a dinner plate the itch is unbearable and very hard not to scratch. the itch for me seems to be around the edges of the hive or where it is reddened. i have noticed once it becomes bright red thats when they go away. i suffer from back and knee pain often and horrible heart burn at times. i have also noticed some crazy IBS . i cannot get my eyebrows waxed do to the swelling that occures after where i cant even open my eyes. im also either very tired or un able to sleep like today. this has caused weight gain and depression for me. its hard to keep focused at work and my employers have no understanding of my needing to go home due to hives to the backs of my knees and the bottom of my feet. it is agonizing at times chills, fever, fatigue, un bearable itch (i can go on and on) . i am a nurse and work in a nursing home high stress at times make it worse. i would give anything to be cured of this. i feel for all or you suffering aswell i know how hard it is to get through the day sometimes the hour with this. i will be visiting a specialist in NY city in the next few weeks whom i was told he helped write the book on urticaria i hope i can get some quality help for the price im paying to see him. i will post any new ideas as i find them ! good luck to all i will pray for you all and i wish you all many itch free days!

A healthy thing that helps me is take a small 1 oz. spray bottle, put about 8-10 drops of Geranium essential oil in, then top off with water. This spray will not only cool the surface of the skin a bit but STOPS the itching for a few hours usually.

I had DPU 4 years ago. I took prednisolone, zyrtec, atarx, xyzal and all kind of antihistamine but all not working except prednisolone.

Recently I took Japanese green Tea only with hot water without sugar. After 2 week now I would say 70% of my DPU reduced.

Try it....
