diagnosis upper abdominal pain right quadrant

I had this problem, too. Still do every now and then. For me I believe I figured out it was irritation to the hepatic flexure (the right angel bend in the colon that marks the connection of the ascending colon and the transverse colon) I took A LOT of pro-biotics for a while but also took a liver detox for a while too, can't hurt. Even if she just took Milk Thistle to aid the liver.

I have been goin threw the same thing for atleast 17yrs. I have had my appendix removed, a hysterectomy 3 colonoscopy's an been to so many dr's an er's. If I sneeze without putting pressure on my side, drink a beer, strain, trip r sit down to hard I get a knot in my right side now the size of a grapefruit. Sometimes it last a few hours an sometimes a few days. I weigh 110lbs an u can see the knot very well when it swells. No one can fig it out. I am so tired of living like this an so tired of all the dr bills an no answers. I would give my pinky toe to find out what is wrong with me.I can never make plans because I never no when it's gona swell. Someone please help me figure out what the heck is wrong with me.

I am not an expert but have they looked to see if it is a hernia in that area?  That would explain why you never know when the bulge will protrude and any gassy food items would create a swelling of your stomach and cause it to protrude through the wall of your stomach at that time, and when digestion is completed and there is no more pressure it recedes.  Check with your doctor, sometimes these things are not malfunctions of an organ but an actual debility in the walls of your body and organs can protrude and cause pain.  It is important that you go see a doctor with this possibility because if it is a hernia could be very dangerous.  Good luck!

I was on this website as well because I am experiencing this kind of pain and I am getting a hide scan today to see why I have the right upper quadrant pain also.  I will look into the possibility that it is this hernia theory if it proves to be negative.

did you ever get surgury to correct all of the problems?

my husband is going through the same thing he's had test after test and noting shows up thats a good thing but he still has this he wakes up sore in his upper right stomache under his ribs and he says when he bends over it feels like something turns over and it's very painful when he stands back up. i'm at the end of my rope with this i love my husband and i wish i could find out what this is any help is greatly appreciated

i have the same thing and have had endoscope, colonoscopy, bloodwork xrays.. i have been trying for a year had a half to find out.. it pulls in my upper right side.. even sitting..

the tests dont show much.. the colonoscopy showed a couple of polyps that the gi specialist removed.. but she said was no big deal..

and the endoscope shows a small hiatal hernia which she also said was no big deal..

for awhile they were tying to tell me it was ibs.. but i know that isnt right..

i can feel swelling in my right side and the pain is constant, and ive had 'attacks' which last about 6 hours..

they keep telling me the organs appear normal in ultrasounds and no stones showing.

i  have had a hidascan.. but the surgeon who was called in on my 11th visit to the er said he looked over all my reports and said he didnt think it was gallbladder because it 'wasnt behaving like one'

whatever that means.

sure feels like an attack when i get one, to me..

and i cant work.. iv been off since sept/11 and i have no income because the insurance co through work wont cover me with 'no cause'

so im screwed for that.

it is constant pain.

i am trying not to take percocets because ive read that it can in fact cause hair loss and i have had that happening.. so i am trying to just have advils.

the er never does anything. they give me dilaudid and send me home.

sometimes they would do an xray or ultrasound.. i have even had a catscan but nothing shows.

its very depressing. i cant even go for walk or to my bank or anything.

i keep going to dr appts and telling her what to check for because she offers no idea of her own.

one thing i ran across is a rare hernia called a spigelian hernia..

maybe that is what it is but i just dont know.. i will have to ask the surgeon that, i have an appt apr of this year..

because my dr hadnt even heard of it, she had to look it up.

i hope that might help someone..

and if anyone finds out anything else in their google searches i hope they come back and post..

we could all use it.. i am in the same boat as you all are.. i dont even feel as if i want to live anymore with this.

my family is very worried and they cant understand why no diagnosis.. its ridiculous..

i would agree at this point for them to go in and open me up to have a look because i can only keep

pointing and saying 'its right here!!'

also i am going to see if the surgeon will agree to do an ercp test. it is sort of like an endoscope but it has a camera and a tool on the end of it so i have read..

and it checks to see if a stone is lodged in the bile duct. apparently with the endoscoe they dont go that far to see.

but with this they do.

 

well that is all i know.. and i guess we just have to keep carrying on somehow eh..

Have you been checked for SOD (sphincter oddi dysfunction) I have the problem for many years now and still suffering with the pain however I have sphincter oddi dysfunction type 3.  It is very hard to detect, because you only suffer with the pain until something finally shows up on the MRCP ro the just go in and measure the Billary duct.   I hope this help and good luck!!

I have been dealing with all of this for 12+ years. First was the "baby kicking" feeling. Dr. said it was mscle. spasms and that I was too skinny and to gain weight and it would go away. Well here I am 15 years later and heavier and am still dealing with it. Now it not only spasms but if I lean over and put pressure on my ribcage, I get horrible pain and something actually goes over my ribcage. I have to lean back and relax and slow breathe. When I'm relaxed enough if I put my hand on my ribcage, I can feel whatever it is move from on my ribcage, back down to under it. I have the swelling and the sensation that there is a grapefruit stuck right under my right ribcage. I had ultrasound and had gallbladder removed due to stones, but am still having trouble. Have had colonoscopy, EGD, xrays, bloodwork for celiac, but nothing shows. Now I'm having trouble with horrible bloating and constipation, that for me is odd cause I always went like clockwork and always "healthy" (as one TV doc calls it). I measured my waist when it was FULLY bloated and then when it wasn't and there was a difference of 3 inches. IN my past, I had horrible pain when I needed to BM and my OB/GYN did a laproscopy, and found that my bowels had attached themselves with adhesions and endometriosis adhesions to my vagina. So, I'm wondering if my lower left quad pain and whatever this is in upper right quad is something growing together with adhesions or possibly hernias in the abdominal sac. Don't know what it is, but I do know, I want to find out and make it go away. Am calling Dr today for another go round to get to the bottom of it. Mine gets so bad, it debilitates me. I'm ready to tell them to cut me open and give me an overhaul! LOL If I do find the culprit, I will post on here.

I have had the same ribcage symptoms for 4 years, especially bad recently since I've had a chest cold with a lot of coughing. Still not sure what's going on. With regards to the constipation/bloating, you could still have a problem with wheat. I would try a gluten-free diet for 2 weeks and see if symptoms go away. Supplementing with magnesium (1 T Phillips Milk of Magnesia at bedtime) for a week might help, especially if you are on a low carb diet.

I started taking Magnesium a couple months ago. Dr. also gave me script for Miralax. Helps a little. I was on a low carb diet and due to conflicting dieting with other family members. I am going back on one though because I felt a lot better while on it. I was thinking the same thing about wheat, since while I was on the low carb, I wasn't having problems. Yesterday I was feeling pretty good until I ate some cereal and then the bloating and pain started. So I'm wondering if I have a low tolerance to certain grains. I saw an article about wheat and testimony from people that had completely cut it out of there diets. They said all their gastro problems went away and the lost weight. It listed foods that you wouldn't think wheat would be in and talked about how the wheat of today is so engineered genetically, that it's causing problems for people that never had them before. So, I think I'll try low carb/no wheat before going to Dr. again. I'm starting to feel like a hypochondriac! LOL I mean, they run tests and nothing shows, but it doesn't get better, so something's wrong.

I suffer from the same exact thing. I have been checked for everything.....and nothing. I guess I will just take this pain to my grave.

I too have been dealing with this similar pain for over a year with no explanation. Several ultrasounds trips to ER and no answers. Percriptions for meds and massage therapy and still no refill. The only thing i did do on my own was cut out my coffee intake and that helped with the acssesive heartburn that I also suffered fro
that I thought was related. If there is anyone with an answer to this annoy pain on my side please let me know. I'm tied of my doctor thinking I'm making this up

i have not been checked for that.. what test would that be..? i will look into it.. i did find out that i have a leaking cyst on my right side ovary. it is 3.6 x 3.0 cm they say. so what they do then is re test it in a couple months i guess they want a period to happen in between there. anyway i am going in 2 days to see if it is still there or what it is doing now. i have read about cysts and have found that it can indeed feel up as high as gallbladder area and also causes bloating as well... and other symptoms. i dont know if that is it or not. my dr just sort of shrugged when i asked could that be the cause of this. she said 'it might...' but was not terribly interested. it does not help for them to be like that but these days you cant just go get another dr anymore. anyway. she is the one that signs the requisitions so.. ive been doing lots of googling about ovarian cysts. yes they will say women get them it is normal but they can indeed cause pain and i would much rather listen to ppl that have it than drs that have not. so im insistent as i can be with her. i will be going to see a surgeon too in april.. and i tried to get my dr to get me set up with an mri but she was all unsure and said well i dont know.. and i said listen i have read it can see things that are missed with catscans so lets do that i cant be doing this forever. it already has been. so the best i got out of her was she filled out the requisition form but wouldnt do anything with it until she faxed the surgeon im going to see, his opinion on whether its a good idea or not. i was like ok whatever. so ext time i saw her she said well he didnt reply. and im getting rather down about this whole thing... and i couldnt take much anymore so i broke down at home and my sister said ok thats it i will do it. she called the surgeons office and apparently he was away for 2 weeks. so no wonder he didnt reply. but the receptionist said its a very good idea to have an mri done. so. now i have to wait until i know results from the ultrasound for the cyst is in and i will go back to my dr and tell her it is a good idea its a ridiculously long process and most of it is waiting for appts. this all should have been done a year ago but i didnt know anything.. lol now i have researched so much that i feel like i could open a clinic myself! one thing that is comforting to find out in all my research is that i am not alone. i know that does not help you guys very much.. but it helps me a little to at least im not the only one on this planet with a mystery illness happening. today i had an almost spasm since 230pm this afternoon. it did not quite kick over.. i thought it was going to for certain but it did not. a friend of my mum's is into homeopathy for years.. and she sent me some mag phos (i assume that is magnesuim phosphate) and if you look into that it is a powerful painkiller.. i dont have any links but check it out. i used that, dissolved the tablets in a bit of water and drank it while it was threatening. now.. it didnt take it all away. but it did not go into full blown spasm this time. it hung around for hours but did not kick over. and i drank that a few times. this is an essential salt to the body.. i am no expert so i dont want to say a whole lot about it but she told me what it does and everything. i just cant really quote it. anyway. im learning alot that is for sure. oh yes. one thing i found out is that lamasil can cause hair loss. so i think that is what happened there... i found a site that had 9 pages of horrible nightmares from that stuff. so that is one thing i found out about too. just passing that along i know it hasnt anything to do with this but i was on it because at the same time as having this, i had (or my dr said i had) ringworm. great. well i dont know if that is what it is at all now. i used that lamasil from sept to the end of january before reading that. i stopped immediately. one thing to note is that, some things can cause rashes. so that whole thing might even be from what i have. i guess this is very long.. but i wanted to put as much detail as i could in for ppl here.. i havent any news yet except the cyst but i wanted to update this post.. sorry i hadnt til now. but yes i still have it and am still waiting too. i will let you know when i have results from the cyst thing at least. you guys, we sure arent alone there are so many things and sites and forums i have read... and many ppl suffer with this too.. i will pass on anything i find out for you to look into.. but mostly i have been googling alot and doing my best to hang in there.. so... we have one it this long guys... let us not let it win... we can do it.. will update later :)

Do a search for Chronic Abdominal Wall Pain... this may be something to look into.
