My year old son hasn't had much meat besides chicken so far, and I am wondering when we should get him started on red meat. Please tell me if small children the age of my son need red meat for nutrition, or whether it is OK to wait a bit longer? I would appreciate more experienced moms' views on this.
I like Kellymom for nutrition information, though it is mainly aimed at breastfeeding mothers (I am not sure if you are still nursing?). ***this post is edited by

I would say your biy certainly doesn't NEED meat at this stage, but you can safely introduce him to the taste, if you wish. Good luck!
Hello viola,
Even though the common advice usually is that babies up to one year should be first introduced to meats such as chicken and turkey, from about seventh month, kids also can start to eat red meat, too. Newer research suggests that red meat is in fact very important for baby’s diet, mainly because it is still the best source of iron babies can get from food.
Read meat, as most food, should be first introduced in smaller amounts, in meals mashed up with vegetables. So, your kid is definitely old enough to be introduced to the read met, of course, red meat being only a small part of meals, at the start. It’s even more the case now that he already eats chicken.
