17-18 is actually the best time, and sometimes people even start earlier than that.

So don't worry about stunt growth and it being harmful for him. However, what you do need to worry about is if he has a personal trainer or not.

When I first started out (17), my parents wouldn't let me get a personal trainer and I had to do everything on my own. Luckily, I did some research and talked to a few people, who made me realize an important point.

If your son doesn't know how to lift weights properly or have the right form when on the machines, he can suffer from problems such as hurting his muscles or having them grow in and adapt to the wrong position.

So basically what Im saying is that if he wants to start weight lifting seriously have him do it correctly, and this is where the personal trainer comes in.

I've been weight lifting when I was 11 and was about 4'10? I'm now 13 and about 5'4 so no I wouldn't say it stunts your growth and to whoever said your almost 13 and is 83 pounds I think... Sorry that's skinny.. All my friends are 95+ I'm 110 pounds and my doctor said I'm 2.3 % body fat you should start lifting bro. Also I do believe weight lifting stimulates growth. My family is short and I'm already taller then my dad.

This is the worst thread I've ever heard, everyone who said this myth is true, should be ashamed of themselves. Weight training does not stunt growth, estrogen inhibitors, severe damage to bone (crushed bones, like ran over by a car, broken knees etc), and steroids can stunt growth. No matter of training, done properly, can stunt growth. This has scientific backing in The American Journal Of Pediatrics and American Academy For Pediatrics. The age 18 has legal connotations, it has NOTHING to due with your physique. You may see supplements that say "Not intended for use by persons under the age of 18", this has nothing to do with adverse side effects, but the fact that those under 18 can't sign the waver for the test. Weight training by persons as young as 8 years old is advocated by the governing bodies mentioned above, along with the res of the medical community. As far as rep ranges are concerned, you should explore all of them, from 1-25. There is no ideal "weight range" to lift in for your age, this is pure poppycock. Live strong.

By the way, stop with this "everyone is different" nonsense, it's not true, we are all fundamentally the same. What differs is height, weight, sex, hormone levels etc. Never use it as an excuse to avoid squats, cleans, deadlifts or any other exercise.

Stats:
Birth Date: 06/01/1995
Weight: 230lb
Body Fat: 15%
Squat: 550lb
Bench Press: 315lb
Deadlift: 585lb
Power Clean: 265lb (newbie form)

Lifting weights has nothing to do with developing kidney problems. Your friends kidney problems as a result of the weight gainers powder and pre-existing blood sugar problem. If people read the ingredients and disclaimers on products before the bought them, they would leave a lot of items on the shelves at their gym's shops. Also, dosage is important. Overdosing on protein shakes and other muscle building aids causes serious health problems.
One thing that is extremely important is to never ingest any product that has one of the ingredients in bold, example:
 "Contains: Phenylketonurics"
There is a reason manufacturers are required to put certain ingredients in bold print.

Dave Draper and Arnold Schwarzenegger started lifting very
young and both are 6'1" or taller. Lou Ferrigno started
working out at 14 years old at the height of 5' 9" and grew to
6' 5" - taller then anyone in his family!

I started lifting about 3 months ago, and I'm getting taller already. Im 14 and 5'10. And I'm in 8th grade. I started lifting for football, which it is mandatory to lift as a freshman. I highly doubt it stunts growth.

I am a varsity football player at my high school, and i can tell you it does not but it can! Poor form and technique WILL do its damage to the body's naturally occurring growth. Great form and technique will not stunt your growth. BUT, after all, it's weight lifting, so it will stunt your growth a little bit. (EXPERIENCE) I am 6'2" and i have slowed down very much. I am also 16. What will also stunt your growth is impact with the surface and such things like that.

As long as your form is proper and you're not trying to lift more than you can handle, you should be fine.
