Hello folks, I am a 43yr.old hispanic who had a combat injury to the right eye back in june of 1986, and was told I, would never see out of that eye again! I,accepted and went along with life. Now here I am with what is called a Pinguecula? What is this? I need more information on this category due to the fact that my left eye is the only one I, can see out of! I know some opthamologist out there knows why this occurs, I would like to now, is there any danger in having laser done or to remove it surgically and if so, do I, loose any eye vision after the procedures of any surgery? Thank You :'(
Hi. I am a 24 yr. old male. I feel for you because I have been diagnosed with pinguecula's as well. A pinguecula is a calcium build on your eye, kind of like a callus. The outer layer of the eye called the conjuctiva has worn away and degenerated due to things like harmful UV rays, dust, and wind. The body reacts to this by forming the ping. The ping is yellowish and causes massive redness and irritation to the eye. If the ping grows onto the colored part of the eye it is called a Pterygium, which is a cousin of the ping. When this happens, your vision can become affected. This is especially dangerous in your case since you have only the use of one eye. I would highly consider visiting a doctor that does the new auto graft procedure to remove your ping. Go to harvardeye.com and check out the PBS special. This site will give you hope and good info. Also, read all the posts on this site. There are many others who have had successful operations.
