Over the past year, I have visited my doctor approx 4 times due to concerns over my testicles (i thought that i had detected a small lump pn my left testicle, mistook the epididymis for an abnormal lump etc). Over the past few months i have been having some pain in my lower back (to the left) and I can only describe this feeling as a dull throb which usually lasts a few minutes and then stops (sciatica related??). I have also experienced the same pain around my left groin area and even in the top half of my left leg. Due to my past concerns about my testicles I will also examine them during these bouts of discomfort and sometimes it even feels as if i can feel the pain here as well (it is so confusing when trying to pinpoint the source of this pain!!)

During my last visit to my doctor (due to the dull throbing pain in the areas highlighted) I asked him to carry out a testicular examination. Nothing abnormal was detected, even though it was mentioned that my testicles were quite large (as well as the epididymis). To put my mind at rest, an ultrasound examination was arranged (although I was informed that it would not be fast-tracked due to absence of any abnormality of my testicles). I attended this appointment late in November and was informed that everything was normal, there was no detection of any cancer and that i should try not to worry and put it out of my mind.

I do examine my testicles quite often and they are roughly the same size (with the left being slightly larger) and am aware that they sometimes sit horizontally as well as vertically and am aware of the location of the epididymis and van defrens etc, but sometimes I can get a little carried away with myself and think that I can feel something new, or if I do experience a dull throb in my testicular/groin area, I immediately think there is a serious problem and then I am on edge for the next day or so. Am I suffering from paranoia as most individuals would have been reassured by a clear ultrasound, and although it was a big weight off my mind, I am still panicking about every little thing!?!?! Also as I mentioned earlier, my left testicle is slightly larger than my right and most of the time it feels as if it is more prominent and sits more to the front of my scrotum, is this normal?

Really sorry for the rant, but would really appreciate a response.

Thanks.

Hi Honeybad31 having one testicle larger than the other one is quite normal and one is sure to hang lower than the other. normally  it depend on whether your left or right handed. if your right handed then your left testicle is bigger and if your left handed your right testicle is bigger. it is normal but you should not feel heaviness in your scrotum or any discomfort what so ever. I myself occasionally receive a dull ache in my right testicle but i normally just wave it off as it does not last long, as I don't get an ache for months but it will return again eventually. some causes for getting a sore testicle is sitting or sleeping in a bad position, sitting for long periods of time or getting kicked in the balls. I hope this information is satisfactory if not please say so and i will to the best of my ability give further assistance.

Sincerely yours

Dr. Nick
