I've had these symptoms off and on for over twenty years.  All the docs are stumped.  Some of the posts here have other problems going on, and IBS is such a cop out diagnosis.  It means your gut is irritated - but the WHY and a CURE should still be found!

For Me I've noticed that it has to do with body temperature.  I sleep with long sleeves and a heating blanket.  That seems to keep the morning cramps from happening.  Sometimes I'm silly and think it's warm enough and at night it might be.  But the early morning is different and I end up with cramps and diarrhea.

I haven't noticed any food triggers, I've been tested for stuff and everything is normal.  I'll keep my eye on eating before bed and see if that effects anything, as well as how long I sleep.  I can tell you this didn't start until after my college days, so I really don't think it's sleep.  ;)

Maybe we can keep sharing our experiences and find a solution!

Hello. I have had a similar problem for as long as I can remember, until recently I discovered what is wrong. Please read and try this and tell me if it works for any of you. I would get the same thing as some of you.

Any time I would wake up earlier in the morning than my natural waking time i would get severe cramps about every five minutes, and diarrhea. I thought that it was also worse or less depending on my diet, cold foods made it worse and warm foods made it not as bad, so I read up on it a little bit, and read about how athletes cure cramps, especially football players. They drink stuff with salt in it to cure cramps, like gatorade.

Then I realized it wasnt cold/warm, it was sweet/salty with sweet foods generally being cold, and saltier foods generally being warm.

So anyway, im figuring my intestine muscles were cramping up from being abruptly awakened and forced to work hard fast with no sodium, so when I wake up early I drink a tiny bit of pickle brine (juice), to give my muscles plenty of salt before I start eating and for me it works really well. Another really good one is olive brine (juice).

If you cant get by drinking either of those and are disgusted by them, some other high sodium things should work, like salt water or gatorade. I would suggest you used liquids for faster absorption rather than salty foods, and use a small quantity/high salt concentrate so your stomach doesnt kick start.

Also on a side note, the closer you eat to when you go to sleep leaves more food in your intestines when you wake up and makes them work harder faster when you ingest more food.

Good luck and get back to me on whether this works.

Wow! There are people out there like me!

I have had this problem my entire life. I am 25. Two years ago, I figure out by myself that I have a salicylate sensitivity, and thought that would have been what the cause was, since stomach cramping and diarrhea are how my body reacts to salicylates. But even now, two years after cutting salicylates out of my diet, I am still having these stomach cramps every single morning. I saw a GI last year who told me I have IBS. But that is NOT a disease in and of itself. It is a symptom, always there is something that causes IBS, and often doctors diagnose it and stop searching for an answer.

Just a thought - My son was diagnosed two months ago with something called gastroparesis. This is a partial paralysis of the vagus nerve which causes his stomach to not be able to digest food properly. Without treatment or the right diet, food will sit in his stomach and literally ferment there, causing reflux, nausea and constipation and diarrhea and... Stomach pain in the morning! He is only 22 months old, so I cannot ask him what it feels like. But it can be hereditary, so I have my curiosities. I don't have medical insurance for myself right now, but as soon as I do I think I will be asking a doctor about this.

As an aside, I saw early in this thread someone mentioned temperature... I have noticed that as well, but not just cold. Any severe temperature seems to make my stomach hurt (not just in the morning). Don't know if this is related or not. For example, I moved to Florida from Rhode Island a couple years ago and went to an outdoor art festival. It was very, very hot outside. Within tenminutes of being outside out of the air conditioner I had a terrible stomach ache, and ended up spending most of the time in the bathroom. As soon as we got back in the car in the AC I was fine.

I have recently been waking up at four in the morning and having a urgent need for the loo but when I do get on it I get horrible diarrhea and stomach cramps that are really painful  I am a teenage male so it could have something to do with a teen aged hormone imbalance but I have seen women and grown adults in this conversation. Unlike most people here I wake up at let's say four oclock in the morning most nights and have to go to the loo were I have very slimy diarrhea and stomach cramps, but when I force myself back to sleep and wake up at let's say 7-8-9 am it's fine. I was wondering when this started happening to all of you were you in your early teens or what?

Hi! I'm 41 after my surgery (removal of uterus ovary cervix) after 2months post op,. I experienced abdominal cramps every morning for 6 months now. But it will only last for 3-8 seconds. It's good if I don't experience it for 1-2 days in a week. I did some experiment if I ate too much or not it's the same. But when it's hot/warm 80 percent chances I don't experience abdominal cramps.

I don't know what most of you are talking about and am going through new methods of research so here's MY unique dilemma....
I wake up approximately either 3:50, 4:30 5:30 or 7 in the morning on the dot with stomach aches. Stomach cramps spasms whatever you want to call it they send me to the toilet. I'm not always runny actually my bowels have been moving pretty good usually it's just the nausea. The stomach pains. I haven't eaten in two days and have been feeling too heavy I've been dealing with this for almost four or five years now consistently every SINGLE morning guys there's absolutely no break. Those times in the morning are when I wake up in pain and anxiety and get stomach spasms clear into the afternoon, it's almost 4:30 and I haven't left my bed but to take two baths, sometimes more are needed just for soothing my stomach but when I get out I'm empty again and just exhausted. I can't even go to family events for more than a couple hours I can't grocery shop or mall crawl or even go to movies. I can't work and it stresses me out and I've gone through every possible thing gastroendoritis or cyclical vomiting syndrome or gluten issues it's all just not helping I don't know what is wrong with me and would be so grateful for help. This is something I've sat laying next to the toilet heater wishing I could die to end and wouldn't wish on my worst enemy seriously the person that ticks me off most in this world and has done so much wrong to me I would never wish this condition on them
