I'm a 17 year old male. I used to be ok with drink, I only started driking about a year ago (who doesn't start before 18 right?) but now even the slightest bit will get my heart going.

Being low in the confidence area acohol helps me, you know. When under the influence I find it much easier to talk to people and make new friends, that goes without saying.

Unlike a lot of you I get this effect almost immediately after any input of drink, and I can sleep ok despite my heart going at 100+ bpm. In the past I'm sure I've had it going even faster than this, maybe 150+.

It's a shame that there aren't any clear solutions - I'm still young and I don't think I can live my whole life sober!

I had an ECG done (is that the same as an EKG?) and the results came back fine though I'm sure there's something wrong.

Being 17 this is a big problem for me, I hope I can get it sorted out.
i'm having an episode right now. i got up to go google and found this thread.

my usual drinks are cranberry and vodka, and a glass of red wine. it always happens to me when i drink cranberry and vodka, a vodka tonic, or red wine, which are my usual drinks.

i decided to switch up one day, and order a hennessy and diet coke. i had NO problem that night. a couple of weeks later i order jack daniel's and diet coke, and this had no affect on me either.

i'm now thinking that dark liquor doesn't do it to me...and i have no idea why.
Alcohol is an insedious drug. After repeted use it has detrimental effects on the heart. It raises the blood pressure and the heart rate. After continued use it can enlargen the left ventricle and this leads to heart rate problems and even heart attacks.
This is crazy! I am a 35 year old female and I have certainy seen my days of partying. Out of the blue I woke up one night after being out socially drinking and my heart was beating so fast and hard I thought if I moved I would have the big one. I find nothing to work but lots of water after and it still does not take it back down to a normal rhythm for hours. I am glad I am not alone but man this is scary. I have googled it tons of times and only seen peoples responses versuses a cure. I am confused to why this only happens when I drink 2,3,4, or 5 beers. It is only at Nightime that is wakes me out of a dead sleep about 5 hours after my last drink.. Wish we could all find a cure! I like my beer, but I guess I will have to leave it on the shelf.
Interesting that people seem not to have been experimenting more with different brands or drinks.

I have gradually developed this problem but found that well-made more expensive wines seem to give me untroubled sleep. Generally speaking Italian, U.S. and Australian wines can be trouble for me. I was going on the principle that the sulfites declared on the back of the labels were causing problems, but I now understand sulfite reaction is more like asthma or even shock typically. A wine-grower's blog tells me that histamines from the grapeskins, especially red wine, might be a problem. Or the industry may have moved from one kind of chemical (for instance for fining) to another for economic or legislative reasons, and that is causing a reaction in some of us.

As to beer, well I never touch american beer - it's full of chemical preservatives, stabilisers etc. Beers made for hot climates tend to be full of stabilisers such as glycerine. Certain german beers are made to an ancient protocol which only allows hops, grain, yeast and water, Lowenbrau is one of them. Try one of those (detailed on the label) and see if that makes a difference.
I had no idea why this happened and you answered m question. Makes so much sense thankyou.
Glad to see I'm not the only one.

It's 2:17am in New York and I'm up ... again.

I drank wine tonight and couldn't have bet anyone I'd be up in the middle of the night with a rapid heart beat, upset stomach, fatigue ... and sleepless for 2-3 hours, then back to sleep and feeling fine.

In general I noticed it has everything to do with quantity and timing; the more I drink and later I drink it the more intense the feeling is. My diet also greatly affects my quality of sleep - though alcohol makes all the difference.

If I have a light dinner without alcohol I sleep perfect, and naturally wake feeling great.

If I add just one glass of wine I tend to sleep restless, but usually don't have to get up. I wake with feeling a bit fatigued.

Add a second or third glass, a bigger meal, and eat later and I'm in for trouble.

Tonight it was dinner and a movie (at home) with the wife. We opened a bottle of wine and grilled up a couple of steaks. I had two glasses of wine and a beer (Pilsner Urquell). We finished the movie and our last drink around 9pm and headed off to bed around 9:30. A pretty early evening overall.

I felt restless by midnight and was up by 1:30. I drank some water, pet the cat, turned on the computer and, well the rest is obvious... 2:33am now and I'm thinking It'll be another hour before I head back to bed.

Wish me luck...
For just over a 2 months now I have been getting some very strange things happening in my heart/chest area.If I drink anything over 2 glasses of wine my heart rate will change from roughly 75bpm to over200bpm.This happened 4/5 times in a row,so obviously i have stopped drinking alcohol. But since stopping the symptoms have worstened. Now I have constant stabbing pains in my chest, left arm, neck and shoulder.it got so bad last week I ended up in A+E as I thought I was having a heart attack.Any exercise brings these pains on instantly,I had one glass off wine last week and my heart was clocked at 210bpm when resting, and the stabbing followed.I am 31 and the doc has told me it will be a very long time before a specialist will see me due to my age.does anyone have any idea what is going on here? also now my pulse rate will double if I stand up from sitting,I was fit and healthy and now I am quite worried.
Hey i am a 18 year old femal and i have been drinking for about 2 years, i usually drink every weekend but for the past week anytime i drink even if it is half a glass of mixed alcohol my heart starts beating so fast as high as 110 bpm... i get really worried is this normal??
I've experienced the same symptoms, which like many of yours, go beyond the normal heartrate increase with alcohol consumption, and I have a theory that it may have something to do with a buildup of a substance in the body called Tyramine, which is in fermented food and drinks. If you look it up, you'll read that it causes these same symptoms. I've noticed that when I limit my ingestion of tyramine-producing foods and stick to some of the "safer" drinks, such as clear alcohols, like vodka and gin, I don't get the rapid heartrate (unless I drink a lot.) I've done a little research, and red wine and beer on tap, as well as some other alcohols, have higher levels of tyramine. I'm not on MAOIs, either, which is supposed to bring this problem on, too. Here's a link to a listing of foods containing tyramine:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foods_containing_tyramine

Drinking water and/or Gatorade seems to help, too, and I think magnesium supplementation is a good idea as well.

It is scary to have this happen, and I hope this helps.
Thankyou,I had a look at ur link,I am seeing the doctor on Monday as the pains are getting worse.I had no drink last night, went to bed at midnight and awoke 3 hours ago(3 hours sleep)with a really bad headache, rapid heart rate(180)and a bad ache on the left side of my jaw.I googled these symptoms and answers always involve calling ambulances.I'm going to sit it out and wait until 2moro.Also have bad ringing in ears which is bizarre.
Well it feels good to know that i am not alone here. I am a 23 year old female. I have had bad anxiety issues for 6 years now. But within the past couple years i have noticed that when i drink alcohol the day after or even as i am drinking my heart reate increases. While it may be normal for your heart rate to increase, people with anxiety tend to notice it more and freak out more which will then make your heart race more.
I have a similar condition. I have drank alcohol for the last 10 years consistently -- about a glass to two glasses of wine a night. And all of a sudden, one day, I noticed that 4 hours after I have alcohol, my heart will pound. It often keeps me up at night. And one night, I went to bed and was woken up by a pounding and racing heartrate. It took me a while to make the connection to alcohol, but once I did I stopped drinking.

I have also developed a strange irregular heartbeat and I don't know if it's connected. I am going to wear a 30-day heart monitor to try to get to the bottom of this. I intend to have some alcohol while I'm wearing the monitor to see if that can provide any answers.

I believe that alcohol can cause heart arrythmias so that might be what we're all experiencing. It can also cause tachycardia. I wish there were a way to prevent the heart stuff and still have alcohol but I haven't been able to find a way.

If anyone has any solutions, holler!
Hi, I'm glad I found this entire thread. I could have sworn I've passed by in the past while looking for answers to my problem.

I too get a rapid heartbeat, normally a steady 120BPM upon drinking alcohol.

It can be anything from beer to liquor. I mainly drink Level Vodka which is a higher quality Vodka. I still get the rapid heartbeat.

It looks like nobody here has had any luck with finding an answers.

I too have had EKGs done and even had a chest x-ray done to check for heart enlargement but everything turns out okay.

I keep telling myself maybe if I lose some weight it'll stop but it looks like it happens to people of all shapes and sizes.

Here's hoping to figuring out what it is!

I also dislike the feeling and the thought that I'm permanently damaging my heart scares me.
Same thing has happened to me several times. I agree with some the posters who think it might have something to do with dehydration. Everytime it happens to me, it is usually after I've had more than my normal amount of alcohol and not enough water. It's not going to stop me from drinking though. F*** it.
