I'm a cyclist converting to your strange, runner's world. I started running just 2 miles in the morning (I haven't run a mile since high school!) trying to get my legs ready for some real action. My problem is that my cardio system is freaking out with this new, strange stress. I can ride for hours and keep my HR in tune, but when I run it jumps up to about 80% of max as a base instead of my usual 75%. How do I control my HR running? Cycling I can just change gears, I suppose "slow down" is the easy answer - I just wanted to make sure there isn't another way. Thanks
All I've got is to slow down. It takes a little bit for your body to assimulate to running. It sounds like you are already pretty fit, so it won't take that long.

Well I've heard worse, it's so tough to slow down when you feel you're in pace. Thanks for the help! Any good links to a "tips for beginners" article? All the ones I've seen suggest things like "walk for 30 minutes the first day" which I feel I'm past.

The only way I know to get your heart rate in check is to slow down and um...sometimes even walk. This is frustrating for those (especially cyclists) who are accustomed to going fast. I had to do this when I was getting used to running. The good news is that since I followed it strictly (which mainly involved walking steep hills), it adjusted within a few weeks.

I hope this helps. Good luck. I think that once you get used to it, you will enjoy the efficiency of running. At least for me, I can run for an hour and get as much out of it as a long bike ride. Since I am a new dad, this is very important because I have so little time. :D
