Hi,
I also suffered with anal fissure for around 2months. I tried all possible things like ayurveda, homeopathy,Sitz baths, long walking etc.
But couldnot get any relief.. I had same condition one and half year back, and suffered for 15 days..
Finally i consulted one surgeon.. The Doctor termed it as Chronic fissure, and advised for surgery..Doctor told that, even if it is relieved by medicine the chances of reoccurring is more and also the duration of suffering would increase. So finally i took the surgery..
Its a operation done under anesthesia.. absoultely zero pain till four hours post operation.. After that there is littel feeling of pain, but definitely far less than the usual fissure pain. Doctor kept me in the hospital till i pass the first motion.. I was really tensed about the pain during first motion of post surgery. But to my surprise, the motion is pain less.. A very little pain is experienced due to the surgical cut and also goes away in few days..My condition is lot improved and happy now..
After operation daily two times sitz bath(hot tub water bath) will give good results..
My advice is if the fissure problem occured for first time then it can be reduced with good food habbits, good excersize and good diet..
But if the fissure problem is occuring again and again, then it is in chronic stage and operation may be the good solution..
i dont find any side affects after the operation..
I was charged in 20k INR for the operation..

Hi, I have just come out of hospital yesterday after having the op, so far so good, not too much pain. I staying in over night and was home by 10:00 the next day. Haven't done my first bowel movement yet and I am dreading that, just drinking lots of fluids and veg soup at the moment so it shouldn't be too bad ... fingers crossed. I've got a bit of bleeding but have put a pad there in case. hot baths twice a day and I've been told 7 - 10 days and I'll be back to normal.

I had a chronic fissure. Suffered 5 months of it - 2 doctors said it would heal itself. Third Doc said it was so deep he could see the underlying muscle. Had the surgery and never had any pain since. BM the day after was 99% pain free. ADVICE? See more than one doctor and find a group that is HIGHLY experienced AND SUCCESSFUL with this procedure. It's a minor procedure but get it done by someone who knows what they're doing. For those who had pain after surgery - I don't understand. Mine fissure was severe - total misery that you all know about. And I can only attribute the total absence of post surgery pain to a doctor that did the job right.

If you're waiting for surgery you need to learn pain management. High fiber, lots of water, metamucil x3 per day. Keeps the movements brief and thorough. You'll still have pain but it'll be a little better than the low fiber diet.

If you do not have any type of insurance, contact the hospital social worker and explain your situation. Most hospitals have "charitable healthcare" where they may not charge at all of drastically reduce the cost and work out a payment plan. Another option is a Primary Care Clinic at your local health dept. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It is extremely painful for about 3 weeks. My rectal spinchter went into spasm and I had to have a second surgery. Then three weeks after that peri-anal injections to continue to try to relax the muscle. I do have some leakage post surgery from diarrhea. I am a kidney transplant patient and take quite a few medications that cause diarrhea. I have to use Imodium some days when the diarrhea is persistent. I often carry or wear a pad if it is a bad day.

After nine weeks of chronic rectal pain I have no pain now and am recovering. My surgeon has me using rectal dialators twice a day for at least 6 months so the spinchter does not scar down. We purchased the dialators at an "Adult" store much cheaper than the ones you can purchase medically. We also purchased a desensitizer gel for easier insertion. There are three sizes of dialaters in each package and you "graduate up". Total cost of gel and dialators about $65.00.

If all goes well for you, you should feel much better the 3rd. week. I had problems so it was far more painful longer that it should have been. I wish you the best!! Terri (female)

Well...i have to say, that the sphincterectomy for the anal fissure was one of the best decisions i have made. I suffered a severe fissure for over 2 years and had tried everything possible to rid what i thought was bad hemmorhoids.. When i first saw the proctologist , he didnt examine me very long and said "you need suregery, you have a fissure"...i thought this may just be another form of money making on something that i may not need and did not want to go through with it. I asked him if there were any other options , he said to try this high percentage cortisone cream...DID NOT WORK! The pain was so severe with every bowel movement that i was at my wits end and decided to do the surgery. The surgery was simple and took all of 20 minutes. I felt no pain waking up thank god.

I am 8 weeks into recovery and man WHAT A DIFFERENCE! THE SITZ BATHS (SOAKING IN WARM TO HOT WATER ABOVE THE HIPS.. OBVIOUSLY ) IS THE KEY TO THE HEALING! The purpose of the sitz baths is to relax the sphicter muscle to reduce spasms and also pushes blood to the affected areas for quicker healing...i was taking 4 to 5 baths for the first two weeks and have reduced down to 2 a day in my 8th week....I HAVE NO MORE PAIN WITH A BOWEL MOVEMENT. However, somedays a slight bit of blood is noticed on the toilet tissue ...the doctor says there are still wounds inside from excising hemmorrhoids and of course the fissure and will still take a while to completely heal ...the doctor agin on my follow up a couple of weeks ago said "The sitz baths will be your best friend...do them"

My recommendations after surgery (if you choose to do the procedure):

TAKE YOUR PAIN MEDICATION AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME ( once the lidocain wears off and you dont have other pain killers in your system , you will have some discomfort and have to wait for the pain meds to kick in, so don't punish yourself unnecessarily)

TAKE YOUR FIBER SUPPLEMENTS AND DRINK LOTS OF WATER..

EAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

TAKE YOUR STOOL SOFTENERS...

TRY NOT TO TAKE PAIN MEDICATION FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF DAYS IF YOU CAN...PAIN KILLERS CAUSE CONSTIPATION AND YOU NEED TO HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT WITHIN THE FIRST THREE DAYS...

TAKE LOTS OF WARM SITZ BATHS...AS MANY AS YOU CAN GET IN IN A DAY!

GOOD LUCK AND MAY YOU BE PAIN FREE SOON!

I had surgery to fix a fissure.  It has been over a week now and I am still in pain.  I am scared to use the bathroom as I know that it will result in crying and pleading to God to make the pain stop.  I don't know how much longer i can handle this.  I have taken stool softeners like I was told to and it is still more painful than before the surgery.  I am concerned to as the stiches are already coming out and I don't know if this should be happening so soon.  I can not go through this again.  How long did it take others stiches to come out?  I am scared and I am in pain.  I sure hope this is worth it.  I never considered myself a wimp and had been dealing with the fissure for over 5 years now, but this aftermath has me at my pain limit.  Concerned because others on this forum have stated that they felt better afterward.  I pray this is eventually the case for me as I can not keep doing this.  I am at the point where I don't want to eat anything because I know what comes later.

Just had surgery on Wednesday, still very uncomfortable but not the constant stinging!! I have more pain from tag removal. I don't eat much, but last night I ate some and today blood in the bowl when I went. Dr said normal but it scares me to think of it coming back!!!! Hi,

I just had rectal fissure surgery 6 days ago and now I am feeling better except post-bowel movement. After bowel movement I feel much discomfort and pain in my anus. This pain goes away as soon as I take stiz bath for 20-25 minutes. During the surgery doctor removed hypertrophied anal papillas, dealt with two small polyps, and banded two internal hemmeriods as well. So definately, this adds to the recovery period. Also, there is redish-yellow emission from rectum which as per the doctor would go away by 7-10 days.

In medicine, all I take is antiboitic, pain killer and anti inflamatory.
