One word: prostaglandins. Pesky prostaglandins are released even before your period starts to do the work of dislodging the uterine lining from the wall of the uterus so you can have period flow. If they only worked locally on the uterus, you would just have some cramps, but these actors find their way into the blood stream and to nearby structures like the intestines -- and can wreck havoc! Prostaglandins can cause intestinal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a feeling of being flushed, and general achiness. In short, they are no fun! To combat them, taking ibuprofen three times a day for the few days prior to your period can block the effects of prostaglandins and stop the side effects in their tracks. You’ll still get your period as expected but will have many fewer cramps and other unpleasant flu-like side effects.

I'm going through the same thing! I am 27 years old, no children. for the past 6 months I have developed flu like symptoms just before my period starts. Every month, wihout fail. I also get bad pains in my legs and very sensitive all over. My energy levels are non existant during this time and I have gained 10kg!. I also have horrendous mood swings which are severely affecting my personal life and I no longer feel like being social. I believe these symptoms started not long after having the IUD fitted which has caused me to have heavier and longer periods. When I visited my doctor I was told to take ibruprofen and lose weight. I never had any problem with my health before this, I was active and very healthy. I feel like this has taken years off my life as despite really trying to get back into shape and being healthy it's near impossible because I spend half my time being sick with no energy, depressed and unsocial as well as feeling guilt and shame for being his way.

I will be changing my IUD to the hormonal coil which is meant to stop periods completely. As I really think all this stems from the heavier periods i am truly hoping this reverses these symptoms and I can get back to living my life like before.

do get your ferritin levels checked - I had these symptoms- hair out in clumps- and had low ferritin. I was actually low end of "normal" range but there's a big range- which perhaps should be reconsidered!- GP said ideally should be above 50 (mine was 25 but normal range is something like 15-150) I took iron tablets 200mg ferrous sulphate and it did the job! takes a few weeks to work as ferritin can only be replenished slowly.

This was so long ago, but when I saw the losing of hair I knew what it was. PCOS, it causes hair loss on the head, can cause weird acne, other symptoms including severe PMS, its PCOS. I suffer from it and had the same thing and even more. I still suffer, but not as much. The hair loss is bc women with PCOS have huge variations in their hormones, along with too much androgen. I take Aldactone. As soon as I started on it an acne type of rash I had all over my back and part of my face for years finally disappeared. I am now on a strong birth control pill to regulate my progesterone and estrogen, which were not being properly regulated by the ovaries which causes this. Also many people with PCOS are insulin resistant and need a special test to determine that. That can require taking Metformin, which often results in weight loss. I hope that helped. It took years to get to a doctor that took me seriously enough to resolve the same issues.

I am the same way you! I have tried everything from the pill, coil, I've had a D&C its driving me mad. I lost a job over having to take time off every month. I have researched online and nothing gives me anything I could try. I'm 35 with 2 kids and when I last visited the doctor she said I could be considered for a hysterectomy as I've tried various things and my quality of life isn't great. I wish there was more help out there to guise us x

I'm only 17, and since the last year, have been getting a cold, which usually develops into a fever, about a week or two before my period. What to do? I admit i dont exercise too much because of the study workload, and I only get seven hrs of sleep... but otherwise I eat healthy for a vegetarian diet...Is my immunity going down or something?

I experience ferry similar circumstances, however I don't remember a starting point to it all.. although I only recently linked the sick feelings to my cycle. I was convinced I must have some iron deficiency or even undiagnosed diabetes. I would get so sick out of the blue I would want to go to the hospital (I've never been one to bother with a general doctor unless completely necessary, but I just felt that bad)
I get extreme hot and cold flushes, extreme nausea, I shake, temporary blurred vission, not to mention the general, mild, but constant body aches.

Ive been to the doctors now a couple times and had blood work done. Every time they look at the result, so okay so it wasn't that you mist be fine, and send me on my way. Its frustrating, because I know these symptoms are t that of just a casual cold, or deficiancy...

I also get these symptoms. The only cause I've found is that I take humira. This drug lowers your immune system. Your immune system is also low before your period. I believe this is what made me sick every month. I began loading up on evening primrose, zinc( took zicam starting about a week and a half before) and drink wheatgrass daily. I also take magnesium and b12 complex. I just started my period and I havd had little to no symptoms. Just thinking even if you're not on an immune suppressing drug there could be something else messing with your immune system. No doctor recommended this treatment to me. They did not understand why this was happening either. I came to this conclusion from reading posts from other women and knowing about the whole immune system thing. It's worth a try.

Hello everyone, I am 27 years old and have been dealing with the same problems. Flu plus period. I'm here to tell my experience, I hope it helps. I have had this problem for around a year and like you had gotten nowhere with MD doctors. Its frustrating to realize I wasted so much time and money. I hate to break it to you but the problem is hormone imbalance. Just because the thyroid may not be the culprit doesnt mean its not hormones. Stress and adrenal fatigue are more than likely the problem here. Look up adrenal fatigue for ways to combat the problem. Natural remedy is to destress and work on your selenium intake. 3 things I changed. 1 meditate before you start your day and destress before bed by skipping technology 2 hours before bed. 2 stay away from the horrible 10 foods. Check out Dr. Glidden 10 worst foods list on YouTube. He is a naturepathy doctor. 3 ensure to intake the 90 essential vitamins and minerals a day go to google and search those or go to 90 for life for one stop shopping. You can also discuss with Dr. Glidden your problems and he will have the answers your looking for. I am so happy now normal life for over a year now thanks for reading and I hope this helps.

Amen honey! It's a bunch of bull that we aren't taken seriously or it's chalked up to pms. It's not ok and shouldn't be a normal part of our lives. Someone out there has to find a way to help. It's maddening.
