i'm putting in my notice here...

i was thinking of doing it end of day friday so that way i wouldn't have to see him right the next morning...

but then i was thinking that i'd have to wonder all weekend if monday was going to be ackward.

so now i'm thinking i'll put it in on monday and just get the ackwardness over with.

whatcha'll think?
Monday morning.
He might tell you to go home.

Depends on the day you're quitting. If you're quitting next week, you give them a little more time to do the necessary paperwork. You shouldn't feel awkward about going in on Monday, regardless. The bastages here sent me to another place a few years ago to try to get me out of government work. It didn't work, and since they wouldn't help me to get situated (try not sending my procedure and work materials for two months, and then much of it missing for starters) in the new place, I only lasted out there about three months. They had one month's notice on my return, and word was given out on the office that I was a failure out there at the outpost. "Failure there, therefore failure here." Talk about an awkward position.... F--- 'em - I'll give them my notice thirty minutes before sign-out time on the last day I plan to work. And they should thank me for it. Bastages.

gretriever - that sounds pretty harsh...

i have to give two weeks notice by law. i'd also like to try and ease in the transition of a new guy (ie. prep some cheat sheets based on my lack of training). but i am bailing at a pretty crucial time for them...

it's only ackward because i anticipate him not reacting the best - and i still have to work with him on some things...

What I'd do is harsh, or what they did? If it's what I'd do, they've got it coming. If I gave them any lead time, I'd hear, "You can't go, you're too important, the output and quality here would suffer." Gee, folks, you should have thought of that before you pulled all this s---. You can't kill someone who's already dead.

When I worked at a government shipyard they laid of 699 of us 48 years ago. I don't know about the others but me and my partner were instructors in the training division. We were hired to teach a 2-1/2 year program that we wrote ourselves. It was to bring helpers up to journeyman level in their trades. The layoff was to take place in 6 months which was also 6 months from the end of our first class of students. So we were a year and 6 months into a 2 year and 6 month program. My partner was # 698 and I was # 699 on the list so our boss tried everything he could to get us off the list as he was the highest ranking civilian in the yard but nothing worked. They asked us to speed up our classes so our students would graduate before we had to leave. So we squeezed the last year into 6 months. Effectively we got about 9 months notice of our impending doom. Recently there was a story in the news about a new training program they have begun that brings helpers up to journeyman level in 30 months. Ours was named the mechanical skills progression program they substituted another word for mechanical in the name of the new program. I wonder if they stole our lesson plans too?

I usually worked for local people that I knew so there was no problem with how to go about giving notice. The one time I worked for a large company about 15 years ago they took no chances with being on the receiving end of sabotage. If you gave notice, security ushered you out the door immediately. If they gave you notice they ushered you out the same way. If they fired you the security guards came to your work station and took you out. When 400 of us got laid off they had everyone go to the conference hall when you started your shift. They told us there was going to be a layoff and had us go to our work stations where we would be called if they were going to lay you off. About 2 hours into the shift me and the guy I worked with were still there. Since we were the two oldest guys in the place we joked about being kept on as the token old guys. At hour 3 a supervisor came by and exclaimed "you guys are still here?" Then he sent us to the guillotine.
