My daughter has had this happen a few times very recently. She is very young, only 13. Someone else posted about low iron, which makes me wonder...my daughter has her period this week. I wonder if there is a connection. I am going to keep a journal.

So everything everyone has said is the same exact thing that happens to me! Randomly, one or both of my hands (usually left) turns gray and the time period is never the same. After reading a few responses i have notice that maybeee just maybe it may have something to do with what i eat. sometimes i get the "gray hands" after i eat, aprx. thirty minutes later. I went to see a doctor about it and asked many people if they knew anything about hands turning a grayish color. i got some scarrryy answers about oxygen levels, blood clots etc. but all my test came back normal. veryyy weird. today, my hands turned gray againnn. my knuckles always seem to be the worst and that muscle on the palm side of my hand turns a dark bluish as well. i also see the tips of my fingers kind of shiny. I was just wonderinggg, in the beginning of november, i got the depo shot for bad periods, has anyone else taken the same shot? or any birth control? my parents think it may have something to do with that. It also makes sense because i havent always had this symptom, just for about a month now. I dont feel any pain at all, no tingling, no ache, no numbing, nothing. I dont think it has anything to do with my blood circulation and im not anemic, i actually have high iron, could that have something to do with it?

Q: is anybody taking a birth control and has this symptom, (depo shot) ?

WOW.. I AM AMAZED TO SEE JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING THREW WHAT I AM GOING THREW. MY HANDS ALSO CHANGE COLORS LIGHT GREY TO BLACK MOSTLY AROUND MY FINGERS IS WHERE IT TURNS BLACK. I TOO AM A NEMIC BUT WHAT IS SO WEIRD IS I SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE MY ARMS ARE BEING SQEEZED WHEN THIS HAPPENS. BUT AFTER WORDS IS WHEN THE COLOR OCCURS.. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO SEE ANYONE ABOUT MY SYMPTOMS, I HAVE CONSIDERED IT BUT I JUST THINK IT IS DUE TO LACK OF OXYGEN. I AM A LITTLE AFRAID OF CLOTS SO I REALLY DONT WANT TO KNOW..BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ MANY CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE IT OUT.. I WOULD LOVE TO PINPOINT WHAT THIS IS, MY CO WORKERS THINK ITS CRAZY TO SEE THIS, AS DO I BUT MY ONLY WAY OF SOLVING THIS IS TO STICK MY HANDS IN MY POCKETS SO THEY DONT SEE. :-) I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW SO IF ANYONE HAS THE ANSWER PLEASE SHARE...

This is also happening to my 12 yr old daughter. Her feet also turn white with tingling. She has also been having heart palpitation. They are referring us to a neuro. This current dr is saying it's autonomic dysfunction.

My wife noticed it a week and a half ago as well. Fingers mainly around knuckles turn an unusual grey almost back color. No pain is associated with it. The only medication she's on is birth control (Spiriva) and occassional albuterol for asthma and have been taking them for years. I noticed if not all posts are females with this problem. I'm in the medical field and will be asking emergency doctors about this. I definitly have empathy for everyone being my wife is going through this very thing. Will repost when I find something out.

Hello! I am 17 and this same thing has happened to me twice! My left hand turns gray, only on the top. The thing is not related to temperature, because it has happened at both warm and temperate temperatures. Today it happened, (it disturbed my friends), and I was actually very warm today as the temperature was nice outside. I would have been sweating if I had been wearing a sweatshirt (which I wasn't).
(My hands look similar to the picture someone posted-- my knuckles very dark, lighter on the longest finger joint, and dark around my wrist.) The gay thing about this is that I can wash the grayness off. If I take a stiff brush and scrub my hand for about a minute, all of the grayness washes off. I can also use my thumb nail to scrape it off if my hand is wet. It comes off and is grayish, like snot (excuse my analogy).
This makes me think that the stuff is something my skin is secreting, sweating, out. I am not a sweaty person, though. My hands are never sweaty, even when it is hot or during exercise. They are always abnormally dry, even on my palms. Obviously, they are not totally lacking moisture, because they look normal and I do not have a problem with cracking skin.
WHAT the HECK is this thing???!????!

I have Raynaud's secondary to dermatomyositis, and I also have problems with my hands going "gray" as they are VERY sensitive to both temperature and position.  I do not believe that the "hands going gray" is technically Raynaud's, but my doctor's working hypothesis is that this phenomenon is related to vasospasms similar to what is happening in my fingers with Raynaud's.  It's not a big deal as long as you aren't experiencing necrosis or ulceration in your hands and fingers.  I have had some success with blood thinners, but the issue hasn't gone away completely.

One point of note - primary Raynaud's can be tied to birth control pill usage.  Perhaps this situation could be as well?  If you are taking the pill, perhaps you could switch to another one!

With all of this said, I recommend checking it out with the doctor to be sure that you don't have any sort of vascular disease going on.

I KNOW WHAT IT IS.  This only happens when you wear new jeans right?  Or dark blue ones?  The dye rubs off on your hands.  Right handded people are more active with their left hand, so that's why it's mostly only there.  And not everyone subconciously runs the back of the hand on their pants.  Only wierdos like you and me.  I am glad that we're not dying!!

It is so nice to hear people have the same problem! I cant figure it out. I did some research and saw a lot of stuff leaning towards a thyroid problem which I've had in the past. I am going to the doctors to check it out and i will see if that has anything to do with it.

I am having the exact same problem!  The first time I experienced this was about 6-7 years ago.  I was 17 at the time so I just thought it was from partying and being stupid.  Now it happened again last year, and again a couple of weeks ago.  There is no rhyme or reason to it, my knuckles just turned a blackish- blue color.  When I looked down at my knees, they were a yellowish-green color.  It lasted for about 2 days.  The affected areas themselves were not painful, although I did experience discomfort and a touch of soreness in my arms.  Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, tongue ulcers, and a random rash on my body.  My doctor thought it might be Lupus or another Rheumatic disease but my tests all came out normal.  She is stumped, I am stumped, and I just don't know what to do.  My past medical history includes Asthma andChronic Bronchitis. I also had Shingles in my eye around the age of 19 and my doctor told me that since I was not diabetic, that it was very odd and that I should be checked for autoimmune deficiencies or inflammatory diseases.  Still no luck though. If anyone has any feedback I would be so grateful.  Good luck to everyone out there!

I am 21 and have experienced for the first time today this gray hands phenomenon. I have been taking birth control for about five years now and I am wondering if this is what is causing it. I am going to the doctor tomorrow and am probably going to change birth control brands.

This happened to me for the last few days! I was panicking, and I didn't know what was wrong. I read the response that mentioned about the jeans....and you know what? it is my jeans!! i've been wearing dark colored Old Navy jeans that I haven't washed yet. My sister tested wearing them, and her hands turned grey too!! And, it doesn't come off easy.  I'm not saying that everyone on here is having this happen only bc of ink, but that's what happened to me. and my hands looked exactly the way everyone was describing/ in the pictures.

Hope this may help someone else!!

I just saw this post. My daughter is 21 and was frightened when she showed me her hands, there were gray not cold and did not blanch when I pressed on her skin. Went to ER as I was concerned whether the circulation was affected. No answer as to why this happened. Did you ever find out?

lol, WOW it totally is jeans! I recently lost a lot of weight so I went out and stocked my whole closet. And I was worrying because my hands were gray. Then I read the jean post. I have been wearing new jeans all week!!! haha! Crazy!
