I had laserscope on my enlarged prostate 12/20/06 and have had problems ever since - bleeding (throwing clots), pain in the penis tip, and now because of my larger than normal prostate for a person my age (63), Doc had to put extra time and heat to my insides, and therefore recovery will be longer. I am now at 8 weeks, urinating hourly, and taking laxatives just to get things going. Does anybody know how long recovery can be on this? My doc is very non-commital.

I had green-light laser surgery at the Kaiser facility in Stockton, CA three days ago. I came home with a catheter. At 4 pm the bag was very bloody. I was told to push lots of fluid; so I began ingesting 24 oz of filtered water every hour. Needless-to-say, I had to empty the bag often. With each empty, the color became lighter. By 2 AM my urine was completely clear of blood, and had a great urine flow, and barely perceptible pain. I removed the catheter myself (easy to do) at 6 AM. There was just a tiny amount of blood - to be expected with the removal. Since that time I have had no bleeding, my stream is very strong, and the feelings of urgency are receding. I was getting up about every 1.5 hrs at night before. Last night I was up about every 3.5 hours. I'm looking forward to not having to get up in a few days. I am having a great deal of trouble now not having sex (just getting very randy all the time), but know that I would be smart to hold off at least a couple of weeks to let everything settle down. This was the best decision that I ever made. I almost cancelled the procedure after reading all the negative posts. So, I wanted to make sure I posted to give those thinking about the procedure some hope. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Oh, I didn't even need the pain killer that my doctor prescribed. Right now - three days out - it would be hard to know that I had any surgery at all.

I LOVE the results.

I had the greenlite precedure done on June 15 2010 it was a painful recovery. what helped me was this web site,it warned me of what was coming somewhat, not the doctor. stayed overnite in hospital the doctor wanted me to stay 2 nite but i didn't want too. maybe i should have I had a hard time peeing every 15 minutes 24 hours for the first two weeks with burning and a little blood. It has been 5 months it still burns each time, urgency is still there, pee every hour the flow rate is good ,sex is good. See the doctor next month hope it improve before then. so far the only thing improve is the flow rate I am hoping the urgency goes away it give you very little warning otherwise you wet your pants, so you are constanting look for a restroom. I am 67 year old had the largest prostate the doctor ever saw. good luck if you have this procedure done.

I had the GL surgery in Nov. 2010...was home with a catheter for a weekend then removed and immediately had a very powerful stream - so much so that I felt the tip of my penis was not big enough to handle the volume. I did not have any blood at all after no sense the surgery and it's been 3 months. I did have pain at the tip of the penis for a couple of weeks which I thought was an infection and immediately got into my doc to talk about it...he didn't think it was an infection, just pain from the prostrate surgery that would go away in a week or two. It did diminish and then went away. I often have pain right after ejaculation and I end up not wanting to masterbate or have sex knowing that I'd be dealing with a bad ache in my prostate for at least 24 hrs. It comes and goes, sometimes I have the pain, sometime not. It's hard to know when but the anticipation of it has a negative side affect to my sex life. I really do hate the retrograde ejaculation - I was told that it would be an 80% chance I would have it but hoped I'd be in the 20% who didn't but no such luck! The orgasm is just not the same - at all - but....I can urinate like a 20 yr. old and never, ever have to get up at night to pee. That much is worth it I think. I am glad I had the surgery but I hope the pain from ejaculation goes away. I was told that it could be up to 6 months before that would disappear.

Just had it! I felt I should write because all the posts were problems. After I read them, I asked my doctor what his "success rate" was, he seemed suprised at the question. I explained that some of the posts were from several years ago, but several people had serious problems. Anyway, my doc stated that he had done maybe 70 prcedures without any serious problems.
A lot of prep, but the procedure took 40 minutes. I was asleep, so I only remember going to sleep and then waking up. 2 hours later I was in the car on the way home with the catherter in. Layed around that day and back in doc's office next morning. Out came the catherter, it burned when I peed that day, but progressivly less.
On the 3rd day, I had a stream like I was 19 and completely draining my bladder! I couldn't believe what had happened. Looking back, in the overall scheme of things, that procedure and the inconvenience was just insignificant compared to what I have now!
I felt I should write because although I feel bad for the guys with the problems, I don't want everyone scared off. I was scared and taking Rapaflo which never really worked.
I'm 66, quit drinking 35 years ago, no smoking since 1980, 6'4",220 lift weights 3 times a week. I was getting up 3 to 5 times a night, couldn't make it more than 3 hours during the day, always never felt like there "was some left". I had the reverse ejaculation with the Rapaflo, but I don't care. Even with the catheter in I was getting erections, and now on day 5 they burn, at full extention, but I think that will pass like with the peeing on the first couple of days.
Hope this help others.

I had the surgery at the finest hospital in Thailand on Janaury 17th...Now, three months later occassional too dark of yellow urine, but good flow and not so many visits in the night to the toilet, in fact only once or twice at most,,Retrograde ejaculation is tough to get used to and i guess that never changes....But, it is cleaner.....All in all, i am glad i did as my 6-10 trips a night and 40 PSA were not fun......had an 80 gram prostate and watched them vaporize it on TV..

I  am 65 and have bph, and have been advised to have green light but I am finding a lot of people who have had trouble.

I think best advice is to use avodart and flowmax (or rapaflo, which works for me) and try to put up with the pills side effect

cause your probably going to have trouble with the proceedure.   I find that urologist lack a bedside manner (been to 6)

and seem to only recommend very expensive proceedures.  Im convinced this is a money scam so they can get rich.

Be very cautious and question everything and look for info online before you decide on anything..I was told 8 years ago

that I would need surgery in a year or two and im still going.  I suggest a careful diet, that helps, mostly low fat, no meat

lots of green food, nuts, etc...you can find that on line also.  I get up about 3 times a night with rapaflo and have trouble

on long auto trips, but, with surgery your chances are not too good either...hell to get old, then you die,.. haha...thanks

good luck...Gary

I had the Green Light procedure a year ago. I had a great result. My prostate was huge according to the doctor. I had the procedure, went home an hour later, with a catheter and had the catheter out the next day. I have been very pleased my stream is good, I had very little pain and have been very happy. The only thing I don't like is the retrograde ejaculation but I guess i have to live with that. My dad had the Turp procedure and it took him forever to heal and be off the catheter. So, I reccomend it hightly. Steve

I had the laser surgery and was unable to urinate the next day after the catheter was removed. Catheter was re-installed for two days and now I can pee, but it sometimes painful, and the stream is just "so so".  Doc says that sometimes a tissue flap gets left behind. I have to have a bathroom close by for every hour. I hope it gets better soon.

Had greenlight surgery on 12/28/2011 and I am doing fine so far. Urinating good with little if any pain.Only had catherater in for 24 hours. Hardly any blood in urine at all. I think you need to get a good dr. with experiance. I used Dr. Basrailian in Hackensack, NJ. good luck.

My husband had your problem, and now after 3 ops to try and sort it out has now been put on a programme of self catheterization starting once a day and has now reduced it to every other day and so far it's working well. He was told it was due to healing outside in instead of inside out and so far no problems. He's hoping to gradually reduce it further. The catheter is only put in and taken out to keep the passage open and from healing over.

I am 68 from Bulgaria, Sofia.
I decided to go under the procedure more than 1 year ago, because I had urinary difficulties and I had catheter. But in 2009 I had operation of the heart, 3 heart valves were replaced and a pacemaker implantation was done so the classic operation was not appropriate for me.
In Bulgaria, my country, unfortunately, we don't have much choice - the only clinic, who has the greenlight technology and performing this surgery was Hill clinic, and I decided to be treated there.
Before that I was with catheter for 14 months. Can you imagine thet!? It is very irritating and painful, the catheter was replaced every month, sometimes there was blood, it was difficult to urinate. I have done the procedure 1 year ago, and feel great! I am very grateful to the doctors who have done the procedure and wish to all the men to have the best soluiton.
I am sure for myself, I did the right  choice, and the best part is - I am still a man, with the erection and the will, but only without my prostate.

I realize this post is over a year ago, but as a retired nurse, I don't see bleeding, especially with spasms, is anything but normal. You should have seen your doctor immediately & insist he/she run a urine test for bladder infection, which may have occured because of the procedure itself (or sometimes not emptying your urine can cause concentrated urine). Also, lab work never hurts to check for increased white blood cells, which may mean an infection.
