Spinal cord compression damaged nerves and led to a reduction in the ability of the muscles of the pelvic floor to contract, or squeeze. My family history is bleak too. Males on both sides of the family at around sixty years of age develop bph and I'm 60.
All the various complications collectively conspired against me, I failed the pill therapy, developed bladder stones and had two different surgeries a month apart. I had the second one, which was the green light treatment thirteen days ago.
I returned home the same day, but with a catheter. I left the hospital after receiving one shot of an antispasmodic to stop bladder spasms. The next 14 hours were pure hell as the bladder continued to spasm with ever greater force as it attempted to expel the catheter, which leaked every time a spasm occurred at twenty minute intervals. What fun...not! Anyway, I was able to get a script finally and the spasms were adequately controlled. During this period, there was a small amount of pain, but the urine was clear and all seemed well in spite of the ongoing painful spasms.
On the third day post surgery the catheter was removed without fuss. To describe the experience of urinating I drew an analogy that likened the burning sensation to being akin to having Gonorrhea, even though I've never had the disease. There was / is also a bit of pain in the tip, like a stone got stuck, but I'm told it's referred pain. There was a small amount of bleeding on urination for a couple of days, a couple of minor clots and a very potent stream. I was slightly constipated and should have used softeners, but on day two post surgery I gave a pretty good push to get things going and that resulted in an obvious bleed, which went away soon after.
I was wondering when it would be okay to have sex again and as no one advised me one way, or another in the hospital, I turned to this site for information.
As anxious as I am, after reading the comments here, I think I'll lump sex in with all the other warnings including the prohibition against driving, or doing anything physical for the first three weeks.

The short story, the sex was great, but probably went on for too long and got fairly aggressive, it's been three years after all, which led to a moderate amount of discomfort following. Now Friday, I can report that the pain has largely resolved and the minor continuous bleeding too has almost gone away.
So, I'll be waiting for awhile once again.

That was about 2 weeks ago. He said no sex until 6 weeks including no lifting or bending. He was very clear when he told me to stay in bed and with no movement as much as possible for 7 days.
I am on day 12 and I'm happy to report that I urinate like a horse with full control and don't get up at night at all, just in the morning. I get full erections, which I get impatient at times wating for the 6 week sex deadline.
I did suffer much pain the first 2 days when I tried to urinate and go number 2. The pain did not come from my urine track, although very minor stinging and skin debris. The pain from my recdom and prostate area . The 5th day I notice I would had some cases of urine discharge, which lasted about 2 days. The pain killers would me feel was 100%, which caused me to walk more than I should. Now that caused me to get more sore, so I stop using pain killing if I could avoid it. This would give me a accurate indication how well I was coming along.
Best advise I can give is to get the right rest and eat what you suppose to eat. The hardest part is keeping from activities you think your feel ready for. Especially sex, which I felt strongly right after surgery . I really feel and like a 16 yr old kid going through puberty.

Hope your doing well.....I know it's an old post, but maybe that is good. I had the Green light surgery, supposed to be excellent, still recovering, nothing unexpected.....Yes the Dr. said my relatively young age 55 ...means maybe I might have to go back in 10 years or so. But I'm taking a philosophical attitude.....excuse the dark humor, but some A - hole could blow through a stop sign or red light and kill me tomorrow...LOL .....I'm not ungrateful for modern medicine, so this might sound selfish. They told me no sexual activity for 6 weeks....okay I can live with that but hey the old "boy" has a mind of his own, guys you know what I'm talking about, he wants to do his thing, even on his own. Such varying opinions on the internet, yes the prostate is a muscle, yes now after two weeks my urine is mixed with blood, but again the Dr. said that was to be expected, as long as it's not like you know, like bleeding to death, LOL which it isn't......so why would an orgasm hurt my prostate, I've had no pain, taken no pain killers......:-(
