Hi Erica

In simple terms, Ovulation is the start of the process, but traditionally the cycle is considered to begin at the start of your period. Ovulation is kick-started by a release of hormones, and an mature egg is released from your ovary. If it meets with a viable sperm, then fertilisation can take place. So you are fertile on ovulation day. However, as sperm can live in the female body for 5-6 days, you are considered fertile for the 5 days prior to ovulation. If the egg is fertilised, then implantation (in the womb) takes place about 9 days later. If not, then the womb's preparation is discharged - you have a 'period' a few days after, maybe a fortnight after ovulation.

Knowing when you are ovulating is only possible when you monitor yourself. Some women (perhaps 1 in 5) can actually feel something happening in their ovaries around the time they ovulate. If you notice this sensations at about the same time each cycle, check your cervical mucus (the discharge you see in your underwear or on toilet paper when you wipe after urination). Texture changes can indicate when you are fertile as your cervical mucus gradually increases and also changes in texture after your period has finished, reflecting the rising levels of your body's hormone oestrogen, and indicating you are close to ovulating. You are most fertile when your mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy (a bit like raw egg white). It helps the sperm's progress as well as nourishing and protecting it.

If you monitor you basal temperature (first thing in the morning before getting out of bed), you may notice a spike at ovulation.

With regular cycles (say always 26 days, or 28 days or 30 days &c), then you will probably always ovulate on the same Cycle Day (CD1 is the first day of your period). So with a 26-day cycle, you will probably always ovulate on CD13; with a 28-day cycle, CD15; with a 30-day cycle, CD17. Fertile days would be respectively: CD8-13; CD10-15; CD 12-17. But if you are irregular, then you cannot be so sure. Also, even regular cycles sometimes have an occasional 'irregularity'.

Apps for this work on your cycle history, often taking an average of the last 3 cycles' data you have input. So they are only a guide.

I hope this helps

Hi Joslyn I would think that your symptoms point to a period starting soon. But if you are pregnant, then it is likely that (from the little you have told me) that implantation has only just occurred over the last couple of days, and it would be too early to test.

However, you haven't said much about your sexual activity, only that you had unprotected sex on four particular days and he ejaculated inside you on those occasions.

  1. Did you have any sexual activity on other occasions, or was this your first?
  2. What other sexual activity have you had? There is always a risk, even when using a condom.
  3. Pre-cum can contain sperm, so even if he did not ejaculate inside you, sperm in his pre-cum could enter your vagina.
  4. Sperm can be transferred manually, so any sperm on your hands (or his) could enter your vagina if those hands through, say, masturbation (solo or mutual).
  5. Why did you not use protection (as you don't want to get pregnant)?

I hope this helps

The periods jus came now, i was being worried for nothing. Maybe it was delayed due to stress that i went through when i broke up with my boyfriend. I have not had any other sexual activity besides that. Thanks alot for everything

Yes that has helped a lot I have had those signs of my ouvalting but I never really thought to much about it or thought I was ouvalting. But now that I know I will monitor my body more.

Also I just got a period tracker yesterday and plugged my the 3 cycles I've had but it says I should have started my period yesterday so I'm a day late. I don't have any cramps or anything so I'm hoping it comes tomorrow or later today.

That's OK Erica. Pleased to help.
The tracker will estimate a possible cycle based on the previous 3 cycles, but if in the current (estimated) cycle, you ovulate (say) 4 days later than estimated, then your period is likely to start 4 days later than estimated.
Take care

Okay so if I due start in four days does that now mean that my cycle is no longer 26 and now it's like 30, I'm still a bit confused. Because if I had a 26 cycle then it would have came yesterday. But now if I wait four days that's because my cycle has increased right.. Idk if I'm over thinking it

Erica, it would mean that this cycle is longer, but that does not necessarily mean other future cycles will be. It could be a 'one-off'. Stress, among other things, is known to alter an individual cycle. You could revert to 26 days.
But your tracker would likely adjust its average. So if your last 3 cycles were 26 days, then your average is 26 days, and the tracker would assume that your current cycle is 26 days. If this current cycle turns out to be 30 days, then your 3-month average would be (26+26+30)/3 = 82/3 = 27.3 days. So the next cycle would probably be estimated to be 27 days. (If it worked on a 4-month average, then 108/4 = 27 days).
If the subsequent cycle were 26 days, then 3 months average would still give 27 days from (26+30+26)/3 = 82/3.
Cycles are not always regular. The most common cycle is 28 days, but even those with a regular standard 28-day cycle sometimes have a non-standard cycle.
There should be some advice in the leaflet that came with your tracker.
I hope this helps..

Yes it does but how will I know when to take a pregnant test if my cycle might be longer this time, how do I know that my period Is just late and that I'm not really pregant ?

A test 3 weeks after your last sex should produce a reliable result. 7th March + 21 days = 28th March. However, if you want to try earlier, then try 23rd. If it is negative, then test again on 28th.
