Hi, my son is 16 years old, and he’s been acting strange lately. I know he’s been using drugs, but he’s in denial about that. How can I make him talk?

I recommend you not to be hasty with such a delicate matter. If there is a slightest chance that you’re wrong, you could ruin the bond between you two. If you accuse him wrongly and if he never really used any drugs, the trust between you two could be lost forever. These are some things that could indicate taking drugs, such as: a drop in grades, losing interest in activities, dropping old friends and having new ones, sudden mood changes, withdrawal from the family and weight loss. It would probably be best if you would talk to your son calmly, without yelling and accusing, and try to help him solve the problems that triggered this behavior. If he is too afraid to talk to you, he could withdrawal even more from the family. If you don’t think he will talk to you, find someone else, other member of the family or even psychologist. I hope you will find a way to reach to your son. Good luck!
