I stopped smoking 3 years ago and have not been right since i stopped.I have water retention, my blood sugar is all over the place, my blood pressure is borderline,i get breathless. And to think when i was on 40 a day i never have any of these it makes you wonder if it is the right thing to stop. Just as well i can not afford to smoke now as i might of started again.

LOL:"joined a gym and got fat" ! I'm struggling with the same problem!
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'm beginning to wonder about the "facts and statistics" we have been bombarded with regarding smoking.
I too have been far more susceptible to colds, flu, fatigue, etc after quitting smoking.
AND I HAD A HEART ATTACK.
Eight months after switching to an e-cigarette (vapor instead of actual smoke inhalation---Doc said far better alternative...) but whammo---heart attack.
I had never had a symptom of a problem other than a chest tightness when I was in my 40s that I massaged away. I was having a "discussion" with a boyfriend at the time, so I figured it was tension.
I had been overweight for years but I was one of those "light on her feet" pudgies and also tended to be lazy, never having been convinced that busy hands were happy hands --and was an admitted serial book reader and movie addict. I had never denied a tendency toward couch potato-ism, but also walked my dog half a mile twice a day most days.
The night before our taking my mom home to bury her, I hit the light and went to bed. I started feeling a tightness, sort of a "pulling" sensation on the front of my right shoulder and slightly lower in my chest, which I first dismissed as stress. It got worse and spread to my left shoulder and I broke out in a cold sweat and knew it was a heart attack. I called 911 and medics arrived and I was zipped to the hospital. (This really confused my neighbors, since I had never had health issues and they naturally associated ambulance at our house with Mom, whom they knew had recently passed).
I was told later by the ER surgeon that I had one 100% blocked artery, one (the culprit) at 99% blocked and the third one at 50% blocked already. Oddly, when I asked to see the angiogram, the surgeon who did the stint a) made an appointment to show me the angiogram and then canceled it b) refused to respond to my calls for over a month and c) finally confessed they "couldn't find the record" and then d) kept the info appoint but simply (verbally) repeated what I had been told re: clogged arteries but SAID they had found the records and he had reviewed them again and reiterated that the info I had been given was correct but he failed to produce the angios (tangible proof.) Sooo I dunno.
The incident occurred on the morning of my mother's burial (I loved her dearly-- had been her caregiver for 9 years) so I was indeed stressed, but...
Eight months prior....
My doctor who had gently hounded me about smoking forever was VERY pleased that I switched to an e-cigarette.
I admit I found it much more convenient and far easier to take a single puff of vaporized nicotine instead of smoking a whole cigarette, and not having to go the whole "lighter - ashtray-breath mint" routine was a huge plus. Not to mention that at today's prices, the Scot's blood in me refused to waste the cig once I lit it. lol. AND that sometimes there was a tendency to keep smoking, simply because the cigarettes were there.
ANYWHO, I was curious and looked online to see if there were others, googling "heart attack and quitting smoking" and found a website that several people had indicated the same time frame after quitting smoking ---about 8 months---that THEY (or their significant others, parents or siblings) had had heart attacks, too.
I believe that quitting anything AFTER 20 OR 30 OR 40 years or more of imbibing/smoking/etc MUST be a huge shock to the system. I DO NOT think the advice we are getting about quitting smoking is actually SOUND advice.

I have to say that Electronic ciggarettes made it possible for me to quit smoking after 40 years. The only other motivation was while I was pregnant ...I did however substitute ciggs for food and gained 75 lbs with both pregnancies. Not sure which was worse ..my daughter has undeserved weight problems while she doesn't eat much at all...guilt. Ugg... i could have caused this in her. I too experience sickness after quitting tho I was down to only a 5 or so day I now after 2 weeks smoke noun electronic ciggs. They help with the cravings emensly. They have to be better as they contain significantly less toxins and don't have the gross smell factor. I feel so betrayed by the "system" ..getting me addicted then causing me guilt! F u system Good luck everyone ...not being a slave to anything is a appositive step.

I quit smoking 6 weeks ago, a two pack a day smoker for 15 years. The first week was a little rough but i guess im fortunate after reading these posts. After the first week the opposite happened for me. I stopped hacking a lung, my constant sore throat went away for the first time in, not sure, probably 15 years. Ive never felt better in my life that i can remember so if youre thinking about quitting, not everyone goes through the misery everyone here seems to be going through so dont be scared, im sure every single person here feels this way, if i can quit then surely you can to, cheers

I am on day 20 and doing fine. The only time i need a fag is when i am under pressure. A quick spray in my mouth with a mint does help untill it passes. Still hoping after 50 years of smoking B & H and a triple by pass.

Quitting smoking is the greatest thing anyone can do. I congratulate all of you for at least trying or better yet succeeding. My parents smoked in the house amongst us kids for as long as I remember. One thing we forget, cigarettes in the 40's thru 60's were not full of the poisons in todays cigarettes. We all choose our poison but we ALSO choose not too. Go through the coughing, breathing problems. asthma upper respiratory problems, copd..but guess whaT it will get better and you will live a happier life. I too have quit, cold turkey, three months ago. Yes, I have all the same problems, but I choose to get healthy, vitamins, exercise, do what THE DOCTOR tells me to do to help me. Good luck to all of you and don't give up it will get better..

Hang in there!! I'm on 7 weeks since I've stopped smoking, I smoked for 16 years @1 pack a day. Around the 2nd week I started to come down with a bad cold, but got through and now I'm going through a sour throat, strained chest, and coughing up smoke-smelling plehm.. I'm no doctor nor am I qualified to give medical advise, but what has given me strength is to just think about this quitting as an ongoing lifestyle adjustment. Everyday is filled with battles, whether big or small, but as you tally more victories (smoke-free days) you will be gaining more power to fight your urges. I no longer have a fever, but I do cough up and still have an irregular high blood pressure. Exercise & nutritious dieting will help you get stronger! HANG IN THERE YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!!!
