I wanted to update my situation. I post a few months ago when I fell of a bike in Bolivia. The surgeons in Bolivia did a fantastic job of draining my hematoma. I returned to the UK as I was nervous I was going to get an infection but I have seen a few doctors in the UK and had an Ultra Sound scan which confirmed the blood had been drained and it was the fat tissue that was ruptured. The hematoma is slowly getting smaller now and I just have a small raise on my leg and 2 marks. One where the impact happened and the other where the drain went into my leg. I think the trouble is not getting the hematoma's drained in time. Mine was drained after 5 days and luckily they did a fantastic job. I do get occasional pain but I can now exercise as normal which is such a blessing.
Try a plastic surgeon I have one on my right thigh from getting hit by a car back in June of last year one Dr. Drained over 900 ml of fluid off of it in August and said nothing else could be done it was still the size of a soft ball after he drained it I have been to 4 other Dr.'s that said nothing could done I finally got referred to a plastic surgeon he did surgery to remove it I have two drains in for five days now I go back in three more days to see about removing the drains I'm hoping this will work but so far it's better than anything so far
I saw a plastic surgeon who drained of my hematoma, been 4 weeks now , pain and haeatoma have gone, just have bruising which is healing nicely. Wishing you all the best, I lived with mine for 6 months and the pain was unbearable, same not being able to sleep/sit on the one side...
I do have to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks, which isn't great but it has been worth it.. as the surgeon warned it could return after the drainage , and the compression garment should stop this.

I’m concerned about a hematoma I’ve had since a car accident almost 5 years ago. It’s the size of a cantaloupe but my hematologist (I am severely anemic) said he could surgically drain it but it will come back (I had to have the steering wheel cut to be removed from the car) but yesterday and today it actually is very tender and sore and it normally isn’t it’s just ugly and it’s also red which it’s never been since the bruises went away after about 3 weeks. Don’t even know which way to go.
Did you ever get an answer or guidance on what type of doctor to see? I’m in tears reading these because that’s what’s happening to me and no one can help and it’s so reassuring that I’m not the only one. The pain never stops. Thank you!
Go see a doctor. I have had delay of care from doctors saying I had a deep bone bruise after I fell a year ago. Now it has turned into a very hard mass on my left thigh. I had X-rays, MRI, bone scans in the past year and now I am being referred to a surgeon at UCSF for biopsy and surgery. I am also going to go forward with a malpractice suit for delaying me so long. I have been in horrible pain...Good luck to you!
Hi,
I feel your pain. I am 4 months with my hematoma after being hit by a truck walking and have a huge hematoma in the Same place as you. They keep saying it will go away. I don't want to wait 7 years for it to go away..the pain is worse when I walk, especially with pants. Not sure why some doctors drain it and other will not. I would like an update on if you found a doctor to help you?
Blessing on you healing!
Cynthia

I got punched in the face 12 years ago and got a hematoma on the side of my cheek, went to the dr's are they said it would drain on it's own, months went by and the lump on my cheek never went away, basically my cheek looks swollen like a chipmunk still to this day 12 years later and I have partial loss of feeling. I have been so self conciuos of it. I am going to find a Dr and see if I can get an mri or ct scan or something to see what is cuasing this lump. I suspect the lump is probably scar tissue that formed because it was never drained. I don't understand why dr's don't just drain these things in the first place so that people don't end up with these disfigurements.
That is exactly what I have! I've had it for 3 years but just got a new one yesterday and went to the ER to see if I could have it drained since the pressure of this fluid filled sac bulging under my butt had gotten pretty extreme, very hard and tight. Of course they wouldnt drain bc they never drain. He said it was a hematoma, and at the time I thought ok he sounds so sure, maybe it is this time, but my last lump never bruised. The surrounding area bruised, but the lump itself was interstitial fluid that I could move from one spot to another by pressing on it. The ultrasound 2 months later revealed a 15cm long separation of the tissue and the lump was much smaller by then and they still extracted 60 cc of clear yellow fluid, not blood. Now my original lump is a small soft disfigurement under my butt but not painful. I had a naturopath inject the scar tissue recently with a sugar water solution, very painful-neural therapy-that stimulates healing. The second time I had the needles it was much less painful.
I had my husband tape my new lump last night (KT tape in strips criss crossing the lump and down the leg) to promote lymphatic drainage. I see an improvement overnight, much less taut, so Im hopeful.
The problem is that doctors do not know about these. Mine have been the result of an extreme sport, falling on my butt. At this point I'm also wondering why more people in my sport don't experience these. Am I somehow prone? I had one a few months ago that I just figured was an off shoot of the original and has left another lumpy remnant. My fall yesterday was not major, which is why I'm wondering if there is some underlying cause.

I got in a auto accident two years which caused a hematoma the size of a bowling ball on the outside of my thigh. At first doctors brushed it off until it continued to grow. They said If I didn’t get it drained my skin would’ve tore open. For over a year I had to get my leg drained and keep it wrapped with ace bandages every single day. Parts of my leg are numb because of this. It no longer grows but it’s sfill very noticeable, all surgeons refused to do surgery on me. I still suffer with it everyday it’s very frustrating
I was in a car accident on April 27,2016 had the largest hematoma on my left breast that the Dr in the ER had ever seen went back and forth to Drs for over a year it went done almost gone but I still have a ping pong ball size lumpin my left breast they did drain it once and said it would go away in time it’s been the same size since Dec of 2017 but lately it has been hurting a lot guess I’ll go back too my dr and see what’s up with it uggggg
I feel the same way. I had mine in 2014 and I still have swelling on the L thigh. I feel like they should go get another surgery and have them open my leg up and contour and drain it.
I fail Dec.1 ,2018 and went to my family doctor then to have as can then to a surgeon .Then to have it drained .The surgeon drained almost 8 of those big tubes they use and said H got it all.It should be better and gone within a few days...Nope called the original surgeon and he said they didnt do what they were told to do .It should have put a tub in for drainage go back.So I Did the doctor said that they had a patient that has a drainage for going on over 3 years .He thought it was best to just the suckion of the needle and it would be better for me. Or the nurse said this .The doctor when I got back to him said that should be no way it was still thta big .i felt like I done something wrong like it was my fault . He took me back and was checking for himself with the ultra sound .He came out and showed it to me .He had me scared that I didnt want to go through with it .It was a hughe white area about 3 .5 inches long and a little over a 1 deep.It freaked me out.Even though I was already to be put to sleep .He said I doubt I can get much drainage out at this point. But I can try. If you want to give it more time it should be gone. Nope its 08/21/2019 and still the same ,still hurts ,and can`t stand long because of the pain in my lower back .Whta to do Any suggestions
I have a large hematoma on my right gluteous/hip area as a result from internal bleeding due to a motorcycle accident. it has been 11 months and I am now strong enough to do something to help it along. The medical world pretty much says that it will go away on its own. I'm not really seeing that. I also have numbness in my back from the residual fluid. Bikram Yoga. The real hot yoga. Also, massage with lymphatic draining and I use a heat pad at night. It's not easy, but it's helping and providing some relief. I hope you can give these things a try. I think you will find some huge benefits from the Bikram Yoga for sure. It's not easy, but stick with it.
