Wow Dana! Going through it now. It will be 8 weeks Wednesday. I go to the doctor tomorrow and I'm going to beg them to relieve my pain and take

I had a bad biking accident in August 2015 and crashed into a tree at speed. I was in hospital for a while and at one stage the bruising was from the top of my ribcage right down to my ankle joint. To this day (after draining the fluid etc) I still have swelling but the doctors say the impact could result in the healing process taking far in excess of 18 months due to the extent of the crush injury.....
A Plastic Surgeon is who I'm seeing for my Hematoma. Try finding a good one. So sorry for all your pain. I understand.
TOMA TOMA TOMA
I had a car accident 7 months ago and I am suffering from the same issue, large hematoma on my upper right thigh that bulges out and is very painful. I keep asking mt primary doc and PMR doc and Ortopedic doc for answers and help and what we are doing is nit changing this a bit, Very frustrated and not sure what to do next.
I had an accident 8 weeks ago where I was squashed between two vehicles and fractured my pelvis in 5 places. I have a huge a hematoma on my right side from my hip to halfway to my knee. It sticks out from my leg about 3 inches when I stand up. I am on painkillers which mask the pain but it has not absorbed any in those weeks and the doctor told me it may not resolve. I do not know what to do as I only have two loose pairs of shorts that I can get on over my leg. Has anyone had plastic surgery with any good results?.
My situation is the same. Car accident. Very large hematoma on my right side from hip to knee. Smaller one on my left hip. Very painful. Can't sleep. I'm having surgery in two days to remove it. We tried draining it 7 weeks in a row but it would fill right back up. Hasn't gone down much at all. A plastic surgeon is the type of doctor I'm using. Wish me luck. Doc said the right leg will never be as strong as before or look as good as before but at least the pain should go away and I'll get to return to work.
I'm an Orthopedic PA and have a similar mass on my posterior lateral thigh (saddle bag area) for 5 years now after hitting a tree snowboarding. My injury is what is called a Morel-Lavallee injury and quite a few of these posts sound similar. They occur after a traumatic "shearing" injury where the skin and subcutaneous tissues get sheared away from the deeper structures, then bleeding occurs into that dead-space causing a large hematoma.
The thing is... at the time of injury, I knew what I had and was working with a doc who had written published articles on Morel-Lavallee lesions and he refused to drain it due to risk of infection and likelihood that it would just fill back up. Prior to the injury, I had personally drained 900 ccs of fluid off of one woman's thigh more than 4 times, just for hers to fill back up again and again. I left that practice, but wish I could find out if her's ever resolved and how. There just is not enough info on it other than surgical removal with the addition of a sclerosing agent (cauterizes the vessels that keep filling it up) and removing the capsule of scar tissue that forms around it.
Well, it's 5 years later and I still have this lumpy, floppy saddlebag on my thigh, that looks horrible that I am very self-concious of and wished that I had addressed surgically (or with serial aspiration/compression) right off the bat. I'm so mad at the doc I worked with for blowing it off. Luckily, mine isn't too painful, but I'm still looking for a non-operative fix. In the end, I imagine I will have to see a plastic surgeon or orthopedist who is familiar with them to have it removed. If anyone who has had successful resolution of this issue would share the name or location of their surgeon, I would appreciate it.
I just thought I would share this info with everyone in case they want to look into Morel-Lavallee lesions to see if they think that is what they have. Most docs have never heard of it and it is something that is missed in the ER regularly.
Oh, one of the best thing you can do right off the bat is compression, so it can't expand. I started wearing a really tight girdle on day 3 after the injury. Talk about pain getting that thing on over the swelling. Ooooouch! I still have the mass, but I imagine it is much smaller than it would have been otherwise.
Good Luck everyone!

Hi I had an accident to just below my knee it caused a large Hematoma size of a large grapefruit. The first three months were horrendous I was off my feet really. The blood/bruising over the months drained down my leg to my foot in the form of bruising down to my toes. Its now 17 months on I still have bruising coming up on the top of my foot as they said it would happen travel down the leg. The knee now itself is racked with pain on some days its awful. It was x rayed when it happened but I never expected this to go on for as long. I have recently seen chiropractor who said it will take decades for it to go so I'm not happy with this prognosis. I'm 71 so it looks as though it will outlive me.
The hematoma and bruising may never resolve, but if you are having pain within your knee joint, an orthopedic doc could rule out any other treatable injury and possibly try a steroid injection into the joint to give you some pain relief. It's worth a try.
I just started trying castor oil packs with a heating pad (you can look up online) and I'm also doing deep massage on some "cord-like" scar tissue bands that are deep in the center of the area. I've also gotten a device off amazon for a Chinese technique called Gua-sha and am doing that. I am concerned that any of this can make the whole thing worse, so try at your own risk. I just started all this, so I'll post if I think it made any difference at all. I am seeing increased bruising from the gua-sha, but that is expected.
You should go see a hematologist
I did a face plant into a sidewalk. I landed on my chin. It doesn't really hurt unless I press on it so I figured it was just bruised and it would be fine. It doesn't hurt to eat or talk. But now there is a large lump on my chin. I read it is probably a hemotoma. Just wondering if I should be concerned and get an ex ray or just wait to see if it goes away on its own. My cheek bone also got bruised. It hurts more than my chin and it doesn't have a lump but does hurt much more than the chin which took most of the trama. I only had minor bruising so I was pretty sure nothing is broken. Should I just wait it out? BTW this happened a week ago.
Did it go away
