Is it common to get the hiccups while recovering from a tonsillectomy? I know some people have hiccups as a side effect. I don't remember if I did, but I'm getting the hiccups daily. Today I got them twice and they were so violent! I had my tonsils removed last Thursday the 24th. Has this happened to anyone else?

Very common to have hiccups while lasting effects of anesthesia and added codeine is in your system. Codeine can be the culprit but this has presented early on taking the med for my husband. In my son's case, it was he begin sittting upright and the effect of the diaphragm muscle working with muscle in throat causes the hiccups. Doctor recommended to sit at a slight incline as he had been in days prior. He felt better day 6 and started doing too much.

Stand and stretch and take a deep breath. Then return to incluned sitting/laying position.

Ice chips instead of gulping water is also suggested.
