I’m not talking about seriously sad or depressing moods, just everyday stuff that gets our nerves jiggling or makes us sad, like being stuck in traffic or hearing some bad news?
Is counting down from ten and focusing on the breathing the only options?

in my case it works best if I simply go outdoors and get physically active - for me jogging is what works best. and this is pure science - more oxygen to your brain (which happens when one exercises) - exercise increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain- and this does make you feel better, more focused etc..

oh, yes.. and sometimes music helps, but I do have to be careful with the choice because sometimes it gets me even more down..

Music helps me too, but like TayaTaya says, you have to be careful of the choice of music. But if you put on an upbeat song and sing and just be yourself can be fun. You can try calling a friend and talking to them. Or some people use those stress ball things. Do you have any pets? I love to take my dog for a walk and just be outside and breathe and take everything in, clear your mind and enjoy the simple things in life. I find it peaceful. Writing helps me too. Have you ever been so frustrated and sad that you just start laughing because you don't know what else to do? When your like seriously!? lol Sometimes you just need to laugh at the situation. I don't know, I have a lot of patience for certain things and like to just take my time with things, not be so rushed, one thing at a time. The whole counting to 10 thing, I don't think it does a thing for me lol Breathing helps, but just to get away from the situation for a moment to clear your head can help too. Sometimes I find we focus so much on the negative stuff, we forgot about the good stuff. But its different for everyone, I hope you can find what works for you!

Claire, you got the point which made me to ask the question – we do really tend to focus so much on the bad stuff that we forget all the good things around us. Somehow, if you don’t make an effort, they seem to get somehow overshadowed. And yes, sometimes frustration just builds up to the point where you can just find the irony in the whole mess and laugh about it. But I guess I’m just a very nervous type – when someone tells me “Calm down, just breathe” – that makes me just even more angry… XD
It's just too bad you simply can't always take a quick walk to clear your head :-(

I get nervous and stressed out all the time!! lol And its really hard when your in the moment to see whats really going on and to be able to step back. And yeah, I hate when someone tells me to calm down too lol Its like, I was calm, but now I'm not going to be! It makes you more frustrated. That's why its helpful to be able to vent, if you have that one person you can go to who totally understands you and you trust, and just let it all out. Its harder when we take other peoples c**p and their not understanding your point of view. So, I guess I wasn't really helpful, because I don't know what you can really do in the moment when its all happening. Other than somehow try to understand whats all going on around you and someone else's point of view. But with the examples you said, like about traffic, music is easy to do, and calling your friend you can do, or you can drive to a store and shop for a bit till it dies down or go somewhere just to get out of it for a bit and get a drink or something. And you just have to think that its no one fault and it just is what it is and how everyone wants to get home to. And hearing back news, well why not get upset? I know I do, and it just helps to tell someone whats going on just to get some understanding and support. We keep too many things in, that one day we will just explode! And that's where stress and anxiety and a heart attack come into play! Just think of the one thing that makes you happy, or your focus and your goal. I don't know, now I'm just rambling lmao! Hope you have a good day or night depending on where you are!
