I am on day 8 of my surgery. I am still having a great deal of pain. I am wondering what did your doctor prescribe for the swelling?  I was given Medol yesterday it takes away the pain and swelling completly but as it starts to wear off I start to swell right back quickly and feel like I am losing breath. How long did it take to fully recover?

Just wondering if anybody can help, I had my tonsils out when I was 10, I am now 19. I still get reoccurring throat infections every 3-6 months and it drives me crazy! The pain and feeling is the same as when I first came out of surgery 9 years ago. Ive been to at least 60 doctors that all just say its a standard infection.. but Its excruciating and I don't know what else to do to prevent them from happening. If anyone could help i'd really appreciate it.

I am a girl and i just turned 21 on june 23 and had to get my tonsils removed that following wednesday June 27, I drank every day heavily till monday 25. I am the biggest wuss with pain, I literally cried when I got my ears pierced in 10th grade, and cant even stand the pain of the IV going in. After reading all of these posts online I was honestly freaking out just because of the reaction so many people had. The operation it self was scary when I was going in I was laying on the bed and legit do not remember one thing, I was put to sleep with the medicine going in my IV and I didn't even realize it when I woke up. I was definitely out of it and was still drugged up. The pain after the operation in the recovery room was a very strange pain I felt like I had to spit and couldn't. I was spitting up little amounts of blood but nothing crazy and when I finally got out to see my parents the pain was probably like a 7 out of 10. Finally I got to go home the drs. told me I wasn't going to be able to eat anything but liquids for the first three days and would be out of work for 2 weeks after that, all of my friends from college were like no way in hell you will be able to work, but honestly I was working 3 days after the operation out in the Hampton's and was eating normally that friday. I'm now on my 6th day of recovery and cant say that it was that bad, I've been going to the beach with my friends and doing normal things minus drinking alcohol. I have def. been taking a lot of the hydro codeine that helps me. I haven't been going under water either because i randomly get a sharp pain behind my ears. As long as you take your medicine the week will fly by like nothing. Also drink a ot of water, I go through around 6 waters bottles a day.

I'm on day 7 mysel and agree with everything you've said so far. I just took my medicine and for the first time it burned like crazy. I've had the worse itchy feeling in the back of my throat since I took that medicine. I'm anxious to try the Chloraseptic spray, hopefully it will numb the throat up before I take my next dose. Thank you

Try the lozenges as well, it numbs your mouth/throat. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed 9 days ago. Didn't feel the pain until maybe the 3rd day.

Sip alot of broth right after surgery....i used a straw bc it actually makes you drink more than you realize. Once the pain kicked in, I forced myself to swallow a bit of either broth or soup... just enough so that I can take my meds without feeling sick. The dr gave me hydrocodone, which temporarily worked. As soon as I couldn't feel that much pain, I would chow down the soup. The more u eat, the faster your body can recover. use a humidifier and don't turn on any floor/ceiling fans. Ask the dr to give you liquid meds, if that's not possible, ask if it can be crushed. If it can be crushed, mix it in with the broth or soup. Its going to taste a bit nasty, then again not being able to brush your teeth and gargle is already bad as is...

on the 6th day, i did the salt water mix. I wouldn't recommend the salt water mixture to gargle. It made my pain worse!!! At my post op appt, the dr told me that there are still some raw spots...the salt water acted as if you're rubbing salt into an open wound. If your breath stinks....chew gum!

starting from day 7 to 8, i noticed that the pain comes and goes. I am now off the hydrocodone and only taking generic Tylenol...which is sufficient.

Update on day 9, pain is tolerable and I only used 1 generic Tylenol 500 mg pill the whole day.

another positive note....I have lost 12 lbs....but might gain it back as soon as i am able to eat steak & burgers :'(

For me the pain has been minimal and easy to deal with. Maybe I have had so many sore throats that this feels like just one more.

I'm eating normally on day 3 (soft foods like eggs, bread) and feel little pain. If you can work from home, it will be manageable on these pain meds as they are pretty weak and I feel okay. Wouldn't want to drive 30 miles, but can sit and work.

Biggest problem for me is nausea and so I was prescribed a nausea med. I recommend getting that ahead of time and just have it. Nothing worse than spending first night throwing up every 30 min.

I got my tonsils taken out and I had a growth under my tongue they had to remove and stitch me up. After 3days of the surgery I am doing great I can eat and drink without making a hurt face. But time to time I hurt if I try to talk to much my stitches causes me pain then always at nights I have bad headaches and I cant go back to sleep unless if i take some meds.
