My son just got his tonsils and adenoids out 6 days ago. It is so hard to see your kiddo going through so much pain. He just looks at me with those sad, blood shot, teary eyes. He is trying to be so strong but he is in so much pain. I would take his pain away in a minute if I could. The day he had the surgery, he was still feeling more human like. The next day, not so much. His doctor prescribed him some liquid vicodin which kind of works but he is almost out of his medicine now. I called in the refill on thursday evening to Walmart, and for some reason walmart failed to fax the doctor so when I finally got ahold of them to have them fax the doc, the doctor had left for the weekend so they said he will have to wait until Monday to have it refilled. When I asked them what do I do if he runs out of medicine in the meanwhile, they said emergency room or urgent care. He doesnt feel up to sitting in a crowded emergency room. He might have enough to last until tomorrow morning. He is also taking ibuprofen, but, they do not make an adult dose of liquid ibuprofen so, he has to take 4-6 of the little measuring cups of the advil. I guess I am just posting this to get this off my chest and to maybe hear from some other parents that are taking care of their kiddos after having this horrible surgery. I keep second guessing whether we should have even gotten the surgery but my kiddo had sleep apnea soooo bad so it turned out to be a very necessary surgery. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do that I am not doing. It will end before we know it, right? I hope. Have a great day.

I have the same question. I am 11 years old, and My name is Jakob VanWie. And I got my tonsils out about six days ago. I'm still in the same pain that I was in the day I came out of surgery. How long does it take to recover?:|

I am a 20 year, 18 month old female. I got my tonsils and adenoids removed 6 days ago. I also had some shaving done on the inside of my nose to help me breath. My nose has bled a little and is really congested but runny at the same time. I cannot blow my nose so its extremely aggravating. But it hasn't been painful. I until yesterday I wasnt able to eat, barely drink, my liquid hydrocod- taste so disgusting and the smell it has after it hits my throat makes me throw up most of the time. But even if I can get the medicine down within a couple hours it makes me throw up. Which sucks since my stomach is empty in the first place! I was able to get applesauce down yesterday but thats all I can manage. =( i just want the pain to go away. I have another 8 days off of work but I dont think I'll be completely healed then and I have to have energy at work. I stand and work with customers all day! I can barely walk around the house as is now because of lack of food. I know once I'm healed it'll be worth it. But right now I regret getting this surgery done. It is extremely painful, I'm always thirsty and so so hungry. I can't play with my daughter like usual and I'm missing out on 2 weeks of work, which is 2 weeks of pay. My ears started yesterday too, they are hurting SOOO bad, along with an extremely horrible headache. I was up crying last night until I forced more meds down just so I could pass out.

Im an 18 yr old female i had my tonsils taken out on January 30th of 2013. Today is my third day and im barely feeling better this is the most pain ive ever been in, i cant laugh, cough or hardly talk. On the day of the surgery i was in hardly any pain but i couldnt swallow anything not even my own spit! its been awful.as pain meds i got prescribed liquid hydrocodone (pain medication) and dexamethasone (some type of liquid steroids)the pain meds suck but my doctor prescribed me some ibuprofen early before my surgery so ive been taking those pills instead and they are helping a ton with my pain, i do feel slightly better besides the pain but i can hardly eat or drink its only been a few days and ive already lost 8 pounds!
it helps alot to eat cold soft foods ive been eating yogurt, apple sauce mashed potatoes and cold soup. I dont like this diet of cold soft foods but it helps alot, drinking lots of cold water is also good, ive been chewing gum which helps with the jaw pain, the awful bad breath and the pain in my throat, i bought some cough drops but im not sure how well they will help because i havent started using them yet
before my surgery both of my tonsils were very inflamed, to the point were i couldn't even breathe, i had been unable to sleep well since late October of 2012. To o=anyone who has to have a tonsillectomy, be prepared for pain and lots of it. it wont go away so soon and the healing process is pretty slow but also know that your not the only one who went through this pain, good luck!

Hi,
just wanted to make a post, had my tonsil taken out at Eye and ear hospital in Melbourne, 9 days now, got in on the Thursday they got me in the theatre at 1.30pm, under anaesthetic, they woke me at 3pm and sent me to the ward the nurse was lovely Morgan, she crave me ice and ice block to help, worst pain ever, woke up all night after 2 hours of taking panadenine fort, they also gave me soluble panadol. Woke up in the morning and the nurse said that I didn't eat all night and that they might keep me for a few more days, and then breakfast came, I didn't wanna be in the hospital so I ate the cornflakes and drank tea painful. She saw that and the doctor let me go home. One of the most painful experiences of my life pain for 7 days constant was taking panadeine fort 8 Max in 24 hours. Finally day nine I am feeling better. I ate solids everyday. Weetbix, porridge, rice, curry, chicken. There is light at the end of the tunnel, I am 29 years old, one of the specialist thought I had cancer hence they took the tonsil out to check it, it's started because of allergic reaction to soy. And one of the tonsil got enlarged. And never went back after I stopped soy. I went to another specialist and he told me it wouldn't be cancerous but it good to take it out and check. be aware that there could be blood loss, coughed blood almost every second day. Take ice to numb the pain and stop the blood. All the best Ron Melbourne, Victoria Australia

I had my tonsils removed 2 weeks and 2 days ago, I was 20 years old (turned 21 on st patricks day, wasn't a great day!) The worst day for me was day 4, such bad pain and everything hurt and was on fire. All I can say is just eat, no matter how painful or how small the food is. Water helped a lot to keep it less like a was swallowing knives. Still not healed now, but I'm no longer taking any pills, stopped around day 8/9. I can't yawn, sneeze, cough, eat big bites and drink fizzy yet, hoping it all gets better within 7 days as I'm back to work then!
P.S I still have the 'white gunky stuff' in the corners on my throat, and it's still normal even though I'm into week 3 so don't worry if you had it to, I asked my Mum about it (She's a nurse)
Happy healing!
