I'm doing research for a novel I'm writing. How long does surgery for an ectopic pregnancy take? When do you get released from the hospital? When do you go back to school/work?

Hi Lucy,

It varies, considerably.

How far along was the pregnancy?  Did it burst?  Was there any bleeding?  How old is the patient?  The patients history?  Any complications?

It can be done and you can go home the same day, laparascopically - so long as there are no complications.

If it does burst, and the patient is fortunate enough to survive, recovery in the hospital can take days.

This is just the physical recovery.

Emotional recovery would be much longer I'm sure, that's generally more of the focus. But if it were to burst, how long would the surgery generally take?

It could take hours. The biggest problems is the damage and blood loss from the rupture. It would not be laparascopic but invasive surgery.
