I had the non scalpel treatment on Friday.  Scheduled for 15 mins, took 65.  I have never known pain like it.  Holy mother of god, why did someone not tell me it was going to be like this? I was injected 6 times, and sucked on the gas and air as though my life depended on it.  Apparently, my tubes were very thick, and connected to my testicles from previous trauma (possibly cricket and rugby), so he first had to cut my tubes away from my testicles, which he couldn't offer pain relief for - Yes, imagine that.  I can quite honestly tell you, that I wept like a baby for 4 hours after the operation, and was wailing during it.  Half way through, they offered to stop, as obviously they knew they couldn't relieve the pain, but what was the point in that; there would have been no way I'd have returned knowing what I would have to go through.  It's not so much that I feel as though someone has kicked me in the testicles, more like there are a gang of thugs taking it in turns. This morning is day 4, and I am slowly starting to think that there is a small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, a tunnel inhabited by mindless, violent miscreants intent of hurting me, but a light nonetheless.Would I have it done if I knew the pain?  No, not a chance, in fact there's more chance of me dating the pope, in fact, I'd rather abstain from sex for the rest of my life than go through that again.  However, I am assured by the surgeon, that I was incredibly unlucky, which made me feel oh so much better.  Although, I now know, that I have 'nice tubes'.

So, I have scheduled my procedure for 5/30/13...and, to be honest, I was fine with it until I started reading some these posts. LOL  Of course, I really do have a high tolerance of pain, so hopefully, I'll be able to handle it by following doctors orders...but, I plan on milking it for all it is worth! :)

Remember, guys who had it easy probably don't show up here. Besides they have nothing to write about.

Just a quick follow up a few months later. The dull pain lasted about 8 days. About 3 weeks after the OP and everything was back to normal, I can feel a slight lump on the testie cord and that's about it. Cant even see the cut anymore. V-Club 4 LIfe!

I decided to get a vasectomy in Thailand, where I work, because of the lower cost. (about $400 US) I am 2 days post op, and I believe that you get what you pay for. I went in to see the doctor for a consultation about the procedure, and he said he would be happy to do it right then, stating that it would only take about 15 minutes and I would be mostly healed in 3 days. I decided to go ahead with it, and moments later, they are strapping my arms and legs down to an operating table. After an initial injection, the doctor wasted no time in making a single incision at the top of the scrotum, just underneath the penis. The anesthesia had not yet fully numbed the area and I could feel an intense, sharp pain as he cut. For the next 45 minutes, the doctor complained about not being able to reach the vas, as he incessantly poked two fingers under my right testicle, rolling it between his fingers and thumb. This I could feel rather intensely, and several times I yelled out in pain and dry heaved as he squeezed my testicle as if he were trying to render me sterile by crushing it. He then gave three more injections which helped numb the area, but the testicle pain never went away throughout the surgery (it still hurts). After loudly exclaiming that the right side was done, the doctor bent down and said, "I'm sorry, but I can only do one side because you only have one testicle." After this he told the nurses in the Thai language that this was strange and he's never seen this before... to which they all laughed and giggled right to my face.  I'm sure I would have noticed in my 37 years if I only had one testicle. Was this some kind of a sick joke? No, even worse. With all the poking and prodding, the doctor had forced my left testicle up inside my groin, and was trying to get me to relax so it would descend. Relax? You try to relax when someone has cut open your ball sack and has you by the balls while six women are standing around staring at your penis and laughing... all while you are hog tied to a table! All in all, it took about an hour to complete the procedure.  Then the doctor said, "I need your consent to send off your vas samples to pathology for examination, just in case I cut out blood vessels instead of your vas deferens. But, I think I cut the right things." Very reassuring thought. I'm still waiting on the results.

Stupid doctor. Insane procedure. You want to know what a vasectomy feels like. I feel like I've was kicked in the nuts over and over again for a solid hour. Two days later, I'm still bleeding from my two inch long incision every time I so much as sit  up in bed. I can't walk. I stood up once and my scrotum swelled to double it's size. I don't know if I should go back to that insane doctor to let him "treat" me again, or if I should just die of gangrene here at home.

After 12 years of living here I should have known better. NEVER! go to a doctor in Thailand!

I just had it done. The procedure was quick and for the most part tolerable. Here I am four days later it still hurts pretty bad when moving around but not to bad sitting. My balls are so tender to the touch and are pretty swollen. At the moment I am regretting the decision but I'm hoping in the long run it will be worth it. Good luck to all that are brave enough to try.

Don't worry, it gets better. We all react differently to being cut.

Anyone taking narcotics for this procedure has no pain tolerance. I work in the medical field and it's an inside joke that anyone claiming a "high pain tolerance" usually has little pain tolerance. No real man would spend the time writing numerous paragraphs online to detail his experience. Pathetic. The softening of the American male continues.

I had my procedure done 9 days ago. My experience was as per the urologist, unique. The Percoset I took before never kicked in. The lidocaine never kicked in. At all. They have me extra, but couldn't give me any more because I started to bleed to much. In the end, I opted to proceed, feeling absolutely everything the whole time. Having the vas burned felt like electric shocks running from my testes my molars. I laid on the couch for the first 4 days, rarely getting up. I used regular ice packs a I was pretty badly bruised from all the flinching. The vicodin didn't work either during the initial recovery. Currently, I still have some cramping and bruising, and I still have one really annoying stitch in place. My cuts recently started to develop whiteheads, which I am really tempted to pop as they itch like mad when they run against the support banana hammock. I won't, but I really want to. I am still applying ice packs one or twice a day, and still wearing a jock under briefs, though it is in no way comfortable. I keep asking myself if I would go through it again if it came to it. I still don't know. It was a horrifying experience for me, but I know what I went through the far from normal. If I went in a day earlier or later, used a different brand multi vitamin, or were shorter, it might have been totally different. There's just no way to know.

i am a 41 yr old male who is now recovering from a vasectomy I had done on Thursday. It is now Saturday night and the recovery process is coming along well. I had general anesthesia. Same day surgery, in at 11:00. Out by 1:45. My urologist was terrific. He did the single incision. im healing well. Followed the instructions: frozen peas 20 min on, 20 off for 24 hrs. It does feel like I was kicked. The the thing that is most uncomfortable is the surgical glue that was used to mend the stitch. Its dry and hard. Uncomfortable against my scrotum but that's it. I have rested this entire time so far. I'll be back at work for sure Monday.

I'm 43 and just had the procedure done 4 days ago.  I had the dual incision method done and then was cut and cauterized.  The procedure itself was significantly less painful than I expected.  I felt the injections, which were not pleasant, but that was to be expected.  After the local anesthesia kicked in though all I could feel was contact and pressure but no pain.

Now...definitely take the 48 hours of bed rest...you'll need it.  Like other guys have mentioned, the "after pain" is reminiscent of the sensation of when your 'nads get inadvertently struck with a glancing blow.  You know, the one that causes you to drop to a knee seconds later.  It's not as intense as that, but the sensation is very similar and it's chronic for the first few days UNLESS you sit and relax.  If you have a recliner USE IT.

I'm 4 days in now and I'm still experiencing mild discomfort and I'm still wearing the supporter which helps immensely.  On a pain scale of 1-10 (one being least and 10 being most) I would say that I'm at a steady 1.5 with the potential for a 4-5 if I move wrong or suddenly but those bouts subside as soon as I stop whatever caused the onset.

I was prescribed 14 days restriction from strenuous activity (including sex).  I'm really hoping that is adequate because I'm an avid cyclist and would like to get back in the saddle again quickly.  This has been my biggest fear surrounding the procedure...that it may have ongoing discomfort that may permanently sideline me from the bike.  :(  So far I seem to be healing up pretty well though and the pain/discomfort does diminish gradually every day that goes by.

Hope that helps

I'm 31 and just had the procedure done this past Friday. Its Monday morning following the surgery, I have minimal discomfort and little to no swelling. the procedure was done using 2 incisions on either side at the top of my scrotum. The doctor had a hard time with the left vas, I felt a surge of pain when he finally located it. I have been placing ice on it a few times a day for about 30-45min. The scrotum shrivels up like a damn prun and numbs the pain. I am anxious to get back to my daily activities and weight training.

This is the same kind of recovery I've experienced so far. I had a vasectomy 12 days ago. It seems that the people describing pain also either did not get, or did not follow, the instructions of their doctor. My instructions were bed rest and flat on your back for 24 hours after, using an ice pack 20 min on then 20 off, then 2-3 days of being a couch potato. Don't do anything strenuous for the first week, wear a jock strap, even while sleeping, and very gentile work outs. The first few days I felt like I'd been kneed in the nuts, but now it is just an occasional soreness. I never needed pain meds. I now go for hours at a time without remembering I'm recovering.

I just had mine done this past Tuesday. the initial anestiasia was slightly painful, felt like a normal hard pinch on the scrotum. The doctor started on the right side. I felt some tugging and pulling but was numbed up real good. I think I was feling more psychological pain. The left side was a lot faster but the same feeling of tugging. deffinatily no real pain at all. I drove myself home, took a few ibuprofin, layed down and applied ice. I had a little discomfort, not too bad. I went to work the following day, my job is 60% desk job. I had a little more pain in the right side. The left was great, no pain at all. Two days after the procedure, elevated pain in the right side. Felf like i was kicked i the growin only on the right side. I called the doctor, asked for a few pain pills just to get me to the weekend. then I could spend the weekend lying down. I am now on day 6, still some pain on the right side. the left feels fine.

I had mine done this past Friday. The local was a little painful but not intolerable. I didn't feel anything while it was going on except a weird pulling feeling while he was yanking stuff around in there. I did on the other hand start to get a light headed, sick feeling and broke out into a mild sweat. I asked the nurse about that and she said that it was normal because my body was reacting to the doctor cutting and pulling on things with all those nerve endings. I'll admit I had to lay down for a few minutes after because I felt really dizzy and sick. I drove myself to the doctors so they weren't gong to let me leave anyways. I went home and did nothing for 2 days except sit in my chair and ice on and off. The third day I went out with my wife and daughter to do a little shopping and go out for lunch. Had some minor discomfort during that. I went back to work on Monday. I work in an office but my job requires me to be on my feet walking around a lot and they are 10 hour shifts. I don't get to sit in my office as much as I'd like.  After Monday I had a little more pain and discomfort and some minor swelling. It was nothing like some of the stories I've read or heard about but they were definitely bigger. The in incision points were sore from all the walking I had done I think from rubbing. I was getting pain in my lower abdominal area like someone had kicked me in the junk. I went back to work on Tuesday and was doing a lot more walking. By the time I got back to my office to sit I was in some pretty bad pain. Sitting though was probably not a good idea because by then they were a little swollen and sitting was putting pressure on them. When I got up I almost went to my knees from the pain. It was pretty bad. I went to get some Ibuprofen from someone in another office and took 4. That kept it manageable for the rest of the day but I ended up taking the next 2 days off. Still some pain sitting and standing up. Hopefully a 5 day weekend will help. To anyone thinking about getting it done make sure you take the time to rest. The doctor told me a few days and I'd be back on my feet. Bullsh*t. Take a few extra days even if you feel ok. I'm telling you I thought I was fine after 3 days, now I'm in some pain.
