Hello!
I had shot of depro provera 1 year ago and I gained weigh (60 lbs in one year!) Horrible!!! And I didn’t change my eating habbits or anything. Also doctor told me there are no side effects to depo provera! So, my question now is: how soon do you lose weight after going of depo provera?

I have been on Depo for 7 years now and when I started I was 160 or 170 in october of 2006 I did some research on the B-12 shot and diet and found out that Depo neglects you of the B12 and B6 vitamins that is why you always feel drained all the time. Well I started the B12 shot diet and I was 235 when I started and right now I'm 165 still have 30 lbs to lose till my goal but atleast I'm back down to a normal size. If you can't lose it any other way do the diet and do the research before doing anything. I am fixing to go through a procedure to fix me permanatley with out surgery called Esther procedure. It is going to be so nice not to have Depo anymore.

I used DP for about 2 years and gained around 2.5 stone - horrible! I did lose it but only after being very careful what I ate and being disciplined (horrible, horrible) for over a year and a half - it involved a lot of soup, veg, no butter etc. I have kept the weight off - until I made the stupid mistake of trying DP again (for various reasons I can't use other methods and my husband and I wanted to wait a little before starting a family) As soon as I realised I was gaining weight again, I stopped the injection (after 3 shots) and am wondering if I can possibly lose the weight again until my periods start - ie, the drug has gone from my system. Think really carefully, everyone, before using this drug!
Hello to everyone who has been on DEPO PROVERA or is thinking about going on it.
I am 32 years old and I too went on DEPO 4/5 years ago. Let me start by saying that all that you hear from doctor's is BS about the fact that the only reason why you gain weight from birthcontrol is because it increases your appetite therefore we eat more causing us to gain weight. That is F-ing BS. I have several close friends who used depo and are HARD CORE atheletes. When they started noticing the weight gain they worked even harder to keep the weight off with NO LUCK AT ALL!
So do you really believe what the doctors are saying? HELL NO...it is ONE HUGE cover up...we are the GINI PIGS and their excuse is well you are munching to much....F*** Y** DEPO! I have been off DP for 4 years. My periods are back...BUT my bones are like MUSH...I have worked out for 2 years straight now doing 4 days a week with weight training, 4-5 days a week of cardio...minimum of a mile run each time and more. Bike rides and hiking you name it. I eat amazingly well...and barely drink alcohol or sweets. I eat good healthy proteins..I once every blue moon each butter/margarine..now I mainly use olive oil and I eat a well balanced diet! I have tried about 50 diets none have worked...we ALL know that losing weight means you have to get off your ASS and workout and eat well and do this on a regular basis.
Some of friends have said well maybe your not meant to be small....right....that's why only 4 years ago...I was 132 LBS and now I am 207.2 LBS....DEPO from the PIT OF HELL. We all need to fight this...and find a way to get this SHIT out of our bodies once and for all. PLEASE ...I am begging you....DO NOT GO ON DEPO PROVERA! I wish I read all these messages when I was deciding if I should go on it or not!
I won't give up though...and you shouldn't either...keep fighting it...I finally went to the doctor and got tested for Insuline Levels, Glucose, Estrogen, Hypo Thyroid, A1 Diabetis test (which test you over 3 mths not 1 day of your sugar levels, this will test to see if you are Type 1 or 2 Diabetis) Also my iron, pregnancy test and many more....I AM NOT PREGNANT...and all TESTS came back noraml...so you tell me what is it? DEPO of course...and the doctors are LIERS!!!!!! I use to be small and healthy...and I have worked my body so hard over the past 4 years...my knees are bad from having to run so much for cardio....I am spent everytime I do weight training....what else is there? I will NOT accept that I will never lose weight again....
AS you can tell I am ROYALLY pissed off at this. Women are treated like shit in the medical world..and it's high time we kick some ass about this HORRIFYING situation!
PEACE

I'm so happy to hear that I'm not the only one struggling with lingering effects of the depo. It clearly hits people in different ways, it's just frustrating that no one knows how to fix it. I was on depo for 6 months - worst mistake of my life. My periods lasted 3 to 4 weeks straight (heavy - not just spotting), with very little time in between. I went from a size 6 to a size 12 just in time for my wedding. I didn't eat any more than I had before, but was gaining half a pound every single day. No sex drive, very depressed. I also had bizarre tooth decay during the time I was on the drug (thankfully that ended as soon as I stopped taking it). But that was 6 years ago and the weight hasn't come off no matter what I do. I'm sick of being told that it's just a matter of diet and exercise. I was able to get pregnant, but gained more weight during my pregnancy. Ended up at a size 16 when I gave birth 4 years ago. Breast feeding didn't make me lose any weight and I didn't gain anything when I stopped. The good news now is that I can eat anything I want and not gain any more weight, but no matter how much I exercise or diet, I'm stuck at a size 16 and it really sucks. If anything worked, I would have the motivation to continue it. But when several attempts at a month or two of serious dieting and exercising get me nothing but total fatigue to show for it, I don't know what else to do.
I was on depo for 9 months (3 shots worth), and I went from waying 123 to 164 within 2 months after receiving the 3rd shot. I was told when I got on depo, that only people prone to weight gain tended to gain any weight. However, I have always been the lucky kind of person who is active and "eats like a bird," as my family says. I have never been prone to weight gain, and living on a farm, I am constantly active. When I stopped getting depo, I then (as the nurse NOW warned me "could" happen) GAINED an additional 10 pounds WHILE increasing my exercise. Not only was I outside, walking all day (unless I'm in bed at night, I'm generally on my feet), I took up tennis, running, dancing, and bought an elliptical. I officially "worked out" (meaning, sweat had to be dripping to count) for at least 3 hours of cardio every day for 6 months, and I lost absolutely NO weight!!! I stayed at 174.2 lbs. It has now been two years, and (thanks to my over-worked knee), I limit my cardio to an hour a day now, but I still haven't lost a single pound. (Well, I had the flu, and I lost 13 pounds during that fiascal, but within the week, I was back up to 174.2). I am extremely careful about my diet, and I routinely exercise. I even tried a personal trainer at the gym, who after a couple of months of seeing no results, I thought was going to have to get therapy for smpathy depression. So, is there anyone else who has had the same situation that has found some sort of fix?!
If you are reading this article in a quest for information about depo PRIOR to getting on the shot, I can tell you it is seriously NOT WORTH IT.
man how is yal gaining that much weight from depo???. i use to weigh 118 i got the shot i havnt gain no weight i wanna gain weight so bad i cant i had surgery 5 weeks ago and now im down to 110 i wanna gain weight so bad..i been on birth control over a year never gain nothing :-(
Just a little thing to make this all seem easier. When I started taking the shot at 16 years old, I gained weight from it, probably about 30 lbs. I do 500 situps a day and yoga, and until I went off the shot, the weight never came off. I went off the shot, and bam---4 months later, I am a size zero again. I was a size 6 from the shot. It's worth it to change birth controls if you want to stay small. It's a miracle drug---don't get me wrong, but it definitely has its disadvantages. I hope that helps. It will get better if you just give it time. I am now 23 and off the shot, and looking to start having kids, and may very well be pregnant. Too early to tell. :-D
I'm 23 and I've been on Depo for a year and a half now...I was a gymnast my whole life, 5'2" and 103 pounds when I went on the shot...I'm now 123 pounds and very depressed, I work out, I go to the gym, nothing helps! I know it is the Depo because I missed a shot and was off it for about two weeks...I got my period back straightaway, and LOST 5 pounds during just those two weeks. I (stupidly) took the shot again and two days later the weight was back! I am very frustrated and after this Depo shot wears off I am going to try something else...it's convenient but it's not worth it! I want to be skinny again!
I have a hard time believing that the depo shot isn't the cause for these girls not loosing the weight. I had 5 injections of the depo shot before I realized the thing was causing me to have anxiety, panic attacks, weight gain, hair loss, bloating, depression, as well as cavities in my teeth that were all never there before getting on depo. I got off the depo shot in January and have been doing better. I've lost some water weight, but am still holding on to excess weight...and I'm an AEROBICS INSTRUCTOR/Personal Trainer!!! I eat healthy and exercise all week long but somehow....the weight still isn't coming off...hmmm. My other symptoms are gone though, so that's good. No more panic attacks!! If you are going to get off the shot, it's going to take your body a while to adjust to being off the depo hormones. The next couple months after getting off the shot were the worst. I had depression, anxiety and mood swings even worse than being on the shot. This thing takes a long time to get out of your system. Make sure your husband/boyfriend knows about the side effects as well as you too. What helped me was realixing I was not a crazy, but I had a hormonal imbalance because of the shot. Many women also post that they have thought they were preggers while on the shot which is highly unlikely and only an obsessive thought do to anxiety. Check yourself out if you are having these syptomes. Doctors, many times do not want to listen to the complaints women have about birth-control especially depo. It's much easier to tell them they are just "fat" cause they are lazy or eat poorly and then shove supplements down their throughts. Depo I'm sure pays doctors a lot of money and that's why they always seek to defend the depo.
I've been on the depo shot for two months now. I haven't had a period since before I got the shot and I've gained 12 pounds and I'm still gaining weight. I had a panic attack for the first in my life after I went the shot and I don't have much of a sex drive. I am not going back on the shot and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone! This is not worth it! I was on the Nuevaring for two years with no side effects whatsoever. The only problem with the Nuevaring is most medical won't cover the cost and at $50 a month it can get expensive. I am now willing to pay for the ring instead of the nightmare I had on the shot. My only hope now is I don't gain anymore before it's out my system. The depo is horrible! Don't go on it!
so i thought the depo shot would be easiest than the other birth controls...
i have now taken 2 shots and the 3 is coming up but im deffenatly trying something else.....
in my pregnancy i gained almost 70 lb...
after giving birth i droped down to 160 wich seems to be all the water weight i had...then i started the shots and i havent really gained more then 5 lb on and off but nothing i do will drop me to my normal 130 lbs.....i mean nothing.....eating right, going to work out..nothing!!!! i thought i lost weight when i looked in the mirror but then i check with the scale and its the same f***160-165..it gets so depressing.....
i dont know how those girls lose it or dont gain....
i guess it depends on your body type for sure because my body is just not working like i want it to
I was on Depo Provera for four years and during that time I gained 15kg. Prior to that I was very slim and had never put weight on in my life.
I didn't change my eating habits or excercise habits while on Depo, but every time I went back for more Depo I was weighed, and my weight crept up and up. I thought it was because I was entering my mid-twenties and my metabolism was changing, I didn't attribute it to Depo until I looked at my medical records and put two and two together by clearly seeing that I started gaining weight with my first shot.
Depo not only made me gain weight, it made me puffy too - like I was retaining too much water. My face was particularly puffy, and I grew to hate myself. For the past five months I've been on a 1200 calorie a day diet and walking very briskly for an hour each day - the weight is FINALLY coming off. This has been very, very tough for me, as despite dieting and excercising, my weight wouldn't budge. It didn't matter how much effort I put in, I felt like my body was ruined forever. People didn't believe that I was dieting and excercising, which really messed with my self-esteem further.
I don't think it's a coincidence that my periods have just now returned to normal, too. I'm so paranoid that I'm staying on my diet for another 6 months, until I return to my usual UK size 8, and I'm never, EVER touching any hormone treatment again. Having a hell painful period once a month, where I vomit and then pass out, is far more preferable to walking around looking like a puffy, overweight balloon and feeling completely out of control of my life.
DO NOT TAKE DEPO PROVERA - BUT IF YOU HAVE TAKEN IT, FOLLOW A 1200 CALORIE DIET UNTIL YOU SEE A DIFFERENCE. BECAUSE YOU WILL SEE A DIFFERENCE, BUT IT WILL TAKE MUCH LONGER THAN IT WOULD A WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER TAKEN DEPO.
I was on the Depo for 11 years after my son was born. I came off it last year to get my body back to normal. Within a month I had a very heavy period, which came every month to the day and lasted a week. I was extremely surprised coz Ive heard of people waiting up to a year to have one. ALso then I started putting on weight. The whole time I was on it I was thin. After 6 months I decided to go back on it to try and lose the weight I had gained. Unfortunately it hasnt worked. The periods have stopped again though. Oh the other great thing about not being on it was my breasts really filled out!! I was loving having boobs for the first time in 11 years and now they're pancakes again :-( I just want to go off it, lose the weight and get my boobs back. Its such a rollercoaster, and really not worth it.
