I have had endoscopic sinus surgery twice now, by a specialized EMT. Both times I had polyps return within 2 weeks. I take a whole cupboard full of meds, I am on allergy shots, and I practically live in a bubble. Even my doctors tell me to try the home remedies, just in case.

Hi,
I have had two sinus surgeries. The second was to remove polyps. Quite an ordeal and quite a bit of pain in the procedure to remove the plastic pieces inside the nose!
Anyways, the surgeries weren't successful as my goal was to get my sense of smell to return. I miss tasting food so much. I have been thinking of going to see a natural path dr. to see if they can help.

Your write up is almost a mirror of my life experience.
- nasal polyps that came back after surgery
- polyps took away smell,
- asthma that started after I was 50 years old (now seeing a respirologist)
- sometimes I'll have the wheezing and asthma symptoms after wine or beer.

What is AERD?

Hi, do the sinus polyps effect his ability to smell?
Thanks,

Thanks for sharing this (Samter's Triad or AERD). I think another reason for me anyway might be indoor air quality (including allergies to penicillium, fusarium, perfume). I've been housebound for a month and it's been rainy and windy so I can't open the windows as often. My new neighbour also uses so many plug-ins, strong smelling chemicals and perfume that inside my apartment actually smells of it. I became housebound (foot injury) and have been sick since a week in (it's now been a month). I had cold sore for an unusually long two weeks, then a cold/flu for a week which I still have then polyps and more cold sores this time inside my nose. So, and I've been taking paracetamol which I normally don't do and my polyps are coming back after I've not had any for years. I've only had them two times before and both times I was living in poor quality mouldy apartment. This isn't a black mould scare reply by the way. It's been my experience. I don't know what kind of mould was in those apartments and at least the first time I got polyps which was the worse. I couldn't breath at all, I didn't even consider it. It took me years to realise that it was a piece of my puzzle. I've also moved around a lot so I was able to reflect back on my health while in various apartments.

I have had nasal polyps for over 15 years now and have had two sinus surgeries. I can say the one thing that has kept them at bay (and prevented a third surgery!) was Flonase (fluticasone) and nasal irrigation. I am not talking about the weak little neti pot. I use an irrigator that attaches to a Water Pik and actually flushes out the sinuses. The one I use is the Grossan Irrigator. I recommended it to my father in law and it has helped him immensely. Check it out.

Google AERD

Aspirin exacerbation respiratory disease(AERD)

my wife had polyps and she had surgery twice, and they grew back... she also suffered from:

Loss of smell
Loss of taste
Adult onset asthma
Higher blood pressure than normal
Episodes of dizziness

I heard it on NPR, .... make sure you are not allergic to aspirin

I gave her 4 aspirin every 4 hours for 24 hours....

Then 2 aspirin a day .... it reduced the polyps, increased air flow which lowered blood pressure and stopped the dizziness (she was about to pass out from the lack of oxygen due to the polyps blocking air passages)

AERD... Google it..... it was a life saver for my wife

Do you take aspirin? I also have an allergy to aspirin and ibuprofen. My ENT failed to notice this the first time I went, the second time he did. He talked to me about the desensitizement. The only thing with that is, if you are a female and wanting children you would either have to wait, or start the treatment and the stop when you want children and then start it again. You have to take aspirin/ibuprofen every day as well, my ENT said for the rest of your life.

What proof do you have to substantiate your claim?

I have AERD with rapidly reoccurring polyps as well. I’ve gone through aspirin desensitization which started out nicely but later landed me in the hospital. Needless to say, that’s a no-go. So how did your desensitization go? Did you find anything else to help you since your last post?

I can confirm that nasal polyps can return quite quickly. I am 40 year old woman who is otherwise fit and healthy. Polyp was surgically removed in 2016 and is back in 2018. Nasal steroids have been prescribed buy are largely ineffective for me.

Look into Samters triad or AERD. She may need to remove salicylates from her diet to improve.
