Most of you know I have been having a helluva time sleeping lately. The problem is not falling asleep, its staying asleep. My doctor gave me something to help but it still is not working. I did manage to get a good 8 hours last night but it was broken up in 4 hour increments. I am afraid to take something when I wake up in the middle of the night b/c I don't want to get addicted/dependent on it.

Any suggestions for getting back to sleep?
Walking up just once in the night isn't unusual. I'm new on the boards so your sleeping problems aren't something I'm familiar with. Do you wake up often? When you wake up, do you lie there and think about stuff? I come from a long line of problem sleepers and nearly every one of them, when they wake up in the night, start to dwell on things that are going on in their lives and end up wide awake (boy we sound like a fun bunch, don't we?). The trick is to train your mind to go blank.
I had a problem for a while of always needing to know what time it was. If I woke up I woke immediately look at the clock and think "oh great it's 4:00, that means I get to stay in bed for 3 more hours." Then I"d lie there for the next three hours checking the clock every ten minutes. I had to force myself not to look at the clock, and I slept better.

Sleeping problems are prolly from a combination of anxiety and medication that I am on. I recently completed a round of steroid (prednisone) treatment for my asthma, and I was recently diagnosed with a chronic heart disease. Normally I get 4 straight hours then I wake up.

Prednisone is nasty stuff, and will keep you from sleeping. If your problems are medical, I don't know what to suggest. Maybe someone could hit you on the head with an Acme anvil at bedtime?
