Hello,

I'm 20 years old and pregnant with my first child, when my husband was 11 he had glaucoma which resulted in him losing his sight in his right eye. I'm a little worried as I'm not sure iif my unborn child will be born with it. Any insight would be great, or even first hand experience thanks.

It is possible that your child could inherit the glaucoma trait from his father. It depends on the type of glaucoma your husband had.

There are various forms of glaucoma, some of which are inherited, and others that are independent of genetics. Current research concentrating on the various forms of glaucoma will hopefully yield information that will allow us to better understand the disease, including how it can be passed through families. People should find out if anyone in their family has glaucoma. New knowledge may enable development of tests that aid in the identification of individuals at risk for the disease and improved therapies to treat affected individuals.
