I've been on this med for 4yrs along with Benicar. I sit at a computer too. My face, hands and feet swell up since taking this. I was 40yrs old and went to Disney World and my parents who were pushing 70 got around much better than me. I have worked out and gotten no where. Constantly feel run down and the pain in my feet never truly go away. My Dr told me it...it's my kidneys. since then my tryglycerides are sky high and they want me on Cozar. IF you do the research you will find that these drugs cause all of this. So, it has nothing to do with being lazy..you will find out soon enough. Too bad health insurance doesn't cover alternative natural meds.

we are all different and you need to stop sitting around judging others!

Well, IMHO that people with high weight gains generally are eating too much food. You can gain weight by eating too much healthy food. Some feel if the food is healthy, they can eat as much as they want. I've been on HCTZ for years. I lost 35 pounds since August because I changed my lifestyle. So a combination of eating the proper foods and controlling the quantities is the key here. Stop blaming the medication. If you want to lose weight (whether it's caused by the meds or not) you can do it if you really want to. And sitting at a computer all day should have nothing to do with being able to lose weight. I am physically disabled and still managed to lose 35 pounds while on HCTZ.

reeny, you are snotty and wrong, but, when your hair all falls out and your weight goes up, you'll see Karma has hit you.

Thanks laollis. Your reply was so thought provoking. Thank you for wishing me to be bald and fat. You're very sweet. I don't think I can accomodate your wishes, however. I've been on HCTZ for years and years. My hair is in tact and I'm thinner than I've ever been. :D

Have a nice day.

I've been on it for 15 years and now weigh 183 pounds! 22 years ago, at 42 years old AND 9 months pregnant I weighed 118 pounds! That's right 118 pounds! I never put the two together, no matter what I eat I keep gaining weight, if I eat more than 1000 calories a day I gain weight. Joined Weight Watchers, followed it meticulously, gained 12 pounds! I am considering bariatric surgery, could it be the Benicar HTC has been causing my steady and constant weight gain?

Thank you laollis for your response to reeny!!! It put a smile on my face! When I posted my comment 4 months ago, I was hoping it would HELP other people and give them some POSITIVE thoughts and encouragement, so they would not feel alone. I was so annoyed with reeny's comment, I was not going to even bother addressing it. Of course, reeny, I know that portion control and exercising are crucial to weight loss! And I have been doing all that! I also have been in to see my doctor several times over the past few months, and she AGREES that HCTZ can be part of the problem combined with the fact that I had a hysterectomy several years ago and I am starting to go through menopause. She does not want to change my medication because even when I was at the perfect weight (for my age and height), I still had extremely high blood pressure. She feels this medication has kept it in check. My best recommendation to people is talk to your doctor if you think it's the medication.

I forgot to mention something in my response. laollis, you may have already done this, but you might want to check with your doctor to see if you're suffering from hypothyroidism, since many of the symptoms you mention can also be a result of that. I have had thyroid nodules for about 2 years, so my doctor checked my thyroid again to see if the weight gain could be from that. Luckily everything is fine. It's just a thought.

I'll tell you one thing, eating healthy and avoiding grainsau not do it. I've followed three different plans set out but three different trainers as well as cut out all dairy and grains due to my body rejecting them, and I've still managed to gain 6 lbs of fat in a six week span! I'm at the gym all the time abd I walk at least 45 min a day. The only thing I've gotten was tired. I've been on these HBP meds for about three months and this stinks. Hopefully you'll have more luck than I've had with the weight

I started this med yesterday, I would be happy to be the control for this. I am male 48 and I lift on average 3 to 4 times a week. I have been doing this fairly consistently for 30 years. My body weight currently is 254 (30 lbs excess I think) my bench 325 and the rest of my strength consistent to that over the past 3 years my gut has become non consistent with the rest of my body and my visceral fat is out of control as well as a continuous edema in my legs which already seems to be dropping after less than 48 hours . I also shake it up with high intensity weight based cardio. That said my bp has finally creeped up to scary 155/ 105 and I have agreed to try hydrochlorothayazide In addition to this I drink just above moderately and have sleep apnea for which I will be receiving a test in 90 days. my first impression of this drug on the second day taken with my morning coffee is that I feel more energetic than usual and i am peeing continuously last night i experienced a couple of cramps, not sure if it is related I will be watching for signs of dehydration.
To the lady who works on a computer, I do also and it helps to get up and move around mid morning and mid afternoon I'll let you know as it plays out.

I up'd my meds to 25mg and I've gained about 10 lbs in 2 months.  I have High BP due to family history. I'm not over weight and I eat very healthy. My doctor flat out told me that my parents both have it and it's genetic.  Nonetheless, I set out to lose the 10lbs that I gained 4 weeks ago by doing South Beach and working out 6 days a week vs. my normal 3 days. I also do 2 work outs a day two days per week.

Since then I've lost 6lbs. HOWEVER, I lost those the first week (I'm doing South Beach where you always have a big drop the first week). So, now I'm wondering if Hydrochlorothiazide caused the weight gain and is working against me in the weight loss battle! Argh, so frustrating.  Or it come be I'm getting older. Shrug

I started taking 25 of HTZ10 days ago and noticed my pants felt tighter this morning so I weighed myself and I have gained 3 lbs. I cannot afford to gain weight. I am stopping this medication and getting something else in its place!!

Well, reeny. opinions are like noses, everybody has one. Let's just say compassion goes a long way more so than judgment, criticism and your sizist bigotry masquerading as an "opinion'. I, too, am having issues with weight gain since taking HCTZ. Plus I'm also nearly 52 and going through the Change. I walk a mile each day (1/2 mile to and from the bus stop), but my job as office receptionist is sedentary and for the most part stationery. I try to get up and walk around as much as possible but it's not always realistic as I am working with lots of people everyday. Used to be very thin in my teens 20s, and 30s so yes it's a bit frustrating when you find that no matter how much you try to lose the weight and how little you are eating, the weight is NOT coming off!

I too am older 47.  I have notice that HCTZ has made me gain 12 lbs. in a year.  But what started the HCTZ was me being on

birth control pills at 47 and getting high blood pressure from them.  WOW!! My gyn said it was okay to take both my regular

doc was against it.  So after feeling all the downs (fatigue, weight gain, higher blood pressure, bloating, shortness of breath,

there is more but can't think of them all) I told both of them forget it keep your medicines.  So now I am on the road to

feeling better.  Today I feel better.  Keep the medicines and I am going to live healthier.  There are alternatives.  You don't

need a pill to help a pill and you don't need to be a guinea pig either.  Be your own advocative look at the health food stores

and see if there are alternatives to your doctors suggestions experiment to the extent that is good for you maybe changes

are needed it would be better to that route then prescription drugs.  That is my opinion only. My lesson has been learned.
