Thanks so much.... I just started taking this medication because my Dr.PRESCRIBED THIS MEDICATION. Because I am dealing with high blood pressure. Within a week taking Hydrochlorothiazide, I gained like 20 lbs . I work out everyday for one hr. including lift weight, always make sure my body is in shape! I was shocked to see my body getting fat withing a week! i became so terrified, when I see my body became blew up like a balloon! Decided to google the medication, if any one had scary experience like mine. Sure enough, I just read your message regards to this poised fxxxxxup medication, what it did to you as well and others! I flushed all left drugs toilet!!t!!! I WILL LET MY DR KNOW WHAT IT DID TO ME!!! i MEAN LITERALLY AT THIS POINT, I FEEL LIKE FIVE MONTH PREGNANT WITHIN A WEEK BECAUSE OF THIS MEDICATION! I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU, WHEN YOU SAID "THIS DRUG SHOULD BE BANNED" Thanks you so much for your honest input!

I am just adding to my previous message. Since I started this medication I started having breathing issue as well, because I got fat so quick withing a week since taking the medication!

I agree Sally.i walk a lot and exercise,then started taking hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg.with in 6 months gain weight for no reason.alot of people has said its cause of this medicine.the comment that this person made don't even know what they are talking about,the medicine isn't what keeps you alive.its exercise and what you eat,thats what keeps the blood pressure down,you can take blood pressure pills if needed but that other medicine is no good...hang in there Sally..DONT LISTEN TO TROLLS

I'm glad I read these post. I too have been on HCTZ & Experienced Dramatic Weight gain. I was on 25mg at first now 12.5mg & I also take Benazepril at first 40mg now 20mg. I went up from 220ish to 282 in the 3 & 1/2 years I have been on both meds & I'm only 5'5. I was also severely depressed so the weight could have came from that as well. Both medications made me constantly sweat even when it's cold. My hair is now Very thin on one side. And the constant swelling (edema) on my lower legs caused me to have 'cankles' rather than ankles. I also have to constantly pee. Like 2x an hour. I finally got tired of being lazy & morbidly obese & This last year I started eating healthier & started brisk-walking for at least 1 hour a day 5x or more a week. I've lost 60 pounds but can't seem to lose more. My legs still swell & I know this medication or the Benzaepril have me with A Lot of water weight. I go to the doctor this thursday hopefully I can finally get off these MF. One thing I know for certain is HBP meds will Definitely make anyone gain weight. So it's best to watch what you eat & Definitely work out or you will blow up. I wish I'd known this when I first started taking this medication I would have got active much earlier. You live and you learn.

Lol you ARE RUDE! I have gained well over 50+ pounds while taking both Benazepril & Hydrochlorothizide. I only eat fish & vegetables & water. No soda, no junk food no meat. I jog for 1 hour & 30 min Every day & my blood pressure is STILL high 160/100. So even with drastic life style changes these meds DO CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN! For the rude individual above I pray you never deal with this & remember if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.

Well, because my silly dr. Went on vacation and wouldn't refill my BP medication, triamterene, I did notice once I got back on it I continued to gain water weight for a few days. It took a while for the med to kick back in and help with my weight and bp.

I work out too and eat healthy. It's so frustrating!!!!! I would ask your dr. To see if there is another option. Keep in mind, everyone's body reacts differently to different meds, you got to figure out what works for you.

The hctz part of the pill does spike A1c level. I checked this with a pharmacist!

I'm a life long athlete who's never been overweight. After taking hydrochlorothiazide for about a month, I am so bloated I can hardly fit into my clothes, my energy is much lower, and I'm starting to get blurry vision. After researching the problem on my own, I learned that there are many natural ways to lower blood pressure (such as the DASH diet), but my doctor never mentioned any of them- instead she just prescribed a pill that causes more problems. Thanks to all who posted warnings here- it's hard to believe we pay so much for health insurance and doctor visits but have to use the internet to find out how to help ourselves.

You are being rude. Just because you're not gaining weight doesn't mean other people don't gain. I've gained a lot of weight and I eat less and exercise more it is the drugs you are very mean. I hope you get fat

We moved from Colorado to Arizona about 21 months ago and had to find all new doctors, etc. I was previously experiencing higher than "normal" BP but my CO doctor never expressed any concern (he'd known me for 10 years). My new doctor in AZ say me BP and was concerned as he thought it too high and prescribed meds to address it. We started with Losartan, then added Finasteride and fonalli Hydro. Until then my weight had been very stable for many years. In the last 16 months or so I've gained 15-20 pounds! Yes, I'm now 73 and now quite as active as before but exercise regularly 3-5 times per week and we eat very healthy (my wife really is into healthy eating). I've cut down on alcohol significantly and am not prone to snacking. I've talked to my doctor about this and asked if the meds he has me taking could be a cause and he continues to say I need to eat less! My conclusion: Before these meds I was able to effectively control my weight, and there has been no substantive change in in my lifestyle. Where do I go from here?
