Hi. I am seeing a guy with herpes. I know it is contagious. Can I touch him without consideration? Can I have sex with him? I think condoms are quite good protection. How careful should I be?
Hi. You should be very careful. Genital herpes is a STD. Condoms are helpful, but not always. Sometimes they can`t cover all infected area. People with genital herpes usually avoid any kind of a sexual contact with uninfected persons. HSV1 and 2 can be released from the sores and even from skin that is not broken. HSV1 causes infections of mouth, lips, and it may cause genital herpes. There is no cure for herpes. Avoid any sexual activity with people with herpes.
It is true that Herpes is a contagious STD and it's true that it can be spread through sexual contact. But it is not true that because someone has herpes they will necessarily spread this disease to you. Precautions such as no sexual contact when there are active symptoms (tingling or sores), using condoms at all other times, and taking anti-viral medications to suppress the disease reduce the spread of the disease considerably (some statistics say your chances of contracting the disease under these conditions is less than 1% a year).
There are many people who have this disease and are married to people who don't. You just need to be careful but it doesn't preclude a sexual relationship with someone with herpes. Read up about it.
