I have had the feeling like there is a nut stuck in my thoat also made worse after eating. Someone who works in a natural foods/vitamin shop suggested that it could be allergies and irritation from post nasal drip.
I took an Allegra today for the first time, and it seemed to help we'll see tomorrow. It is an awfully annoying feeling and worrisome until you know exactly what it could be.
As for the feeling on the side of the throat.....years ago I had an awful feeling like there was something there that I wanted out! I had just eaten fish and thought it might be a fish bone. I went to outpatient and they found that I had a ball of food accumulation in the back cockles of my mouth....that is the only way I know how to describe that area. They got the ball out and I felt instant relief.....Until today there are times I get the same feeling but am able to take care of it by coughing very aggressivly.

I have had the same issue with a lump in the throat and pain in the side of my neck. I'm not a smoKer...I work out..but I have had some back pain.....I've had MRI's of my neck and back....everything is fine....
I too felt like I had a lump in my throat. It was never there when I woke up in the morning but would most times appear about 3 hrs later. I started keeping a log of what and when I ate, seeing that I was told by an ENT (who scoped my throat - thru my nose), a Gastro entomologist (who did an endoscopy), and my General Practitioner, that it was GERD. I started the log hoping to avoid the lifelong antacids all of these doctors were pushing. To make a long story short, I continued to research 'lump in throat' on the internet. After 8 months of this lump, I finally stumbled across a forum where a doctor said that my specific symptoms were from an injured throat (I forget if he said esophagus specifically). At that moment, the light went on, and I remember burning my throat w/scalding hot coffee when my symptoms appeared. I decided to do an extreme test - I did not talk for an entire day - AND THE LUMP NEVER APPEARED that day. I have now been lump free for a month! I just speak softly and sparingly (my husband is more happy than I am with this remedy!!!!!) I can't find the forum that showed me this cure but I am sure I searched on 'lump in throat'. I am so grateful to that doctor and that I do not have to take any unnecessary medicine. This 'cure' might work for you. What have you got to lose - 1 day of not talking? It even helped my marriage! Good luck everyone!
Hi,
I am hoping to get some advice on my throat.
It feels like I have a lump of food on the left hand side when I swallow. I have had this feeling for about 1 week and it does not appear to be getting better or worse. It does not seem painful or sore - just annoying and a bit frightening. I am concerned I could have a growth?
I went to my doctor yesterday and he prescribed me anxiety meds as I have had a tough last 6 months. However - I have asked for blood tests and thyroid tests to confirm that it is not a thyroid condition.
I am hesitant to take the anxiety meds as I do not feel stressed??
What questions should I be asking my doctor?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I too have had similar symptoms
1. Feels swollen as if a lump
2. Is painful when swallowing
3. Not tonsils and not lympnode (spelling??)
4. Single sided (my right)
5. Muscle soreness on the outside if massaged (no one else complained of this)
6. NO clicking
This all started 4-5 days into my trip to the Domenican Republic. That Friday, I had dived 3 dives and as a bit conserned that it might be DCS, but I felt for air pockets in my throat and did not feel (or hear) anything. 2 days later, I took a flight home and did not experience more than normal discomfort on the plane, although the ear on that side was painfull (at the throat) to equalize.
Visited a doctor 3.5 days after symptoms began. Of couse they did not know, but I was give antibiotics. I am also taking 4 doses of 600mg of ibuprofen for swelling.
2 days later I saw an ENT. He called inspected my thorat with a scope and said it was nasal drip. That the nasal fluid flowing down my throat was irritating my throat and causing this to happen. It makes some sense, although I do not understand why the muscles would be sore as well. Anyway, I am on a 9 day dose of steriods now to reduce swelling and I am supposed to check back in 2 weeks. ( I am off the ibuprofen now). He also said that it was definitely not an infection.
I have read about someone else taking allergy medicine and that helped. I am going to try adding that as well. It would make sense that my allergies may have flaired up while being exposed to a different environment (well, kindof since I thought most allergies were aas a result of being exposed for a long time to something.. unless the concentrations were just higher there) and thus causing this snowball effect.
If I end up feeling better I will try to be a good boy and post back.

Some of you here might want to go to an ear nose and throat specialist and insist on being examined and tested for LERD -- Laryngopharangeal reflux disease. It is a very sneaky condition that can cause these kinds of problems and it is often misdiagnosed by doctors. MY mother has it and suffered for almost 6 months at the hands of a clueless ENT until she found a better informed one who recognized immediately what she had and got her on the medication she needed so that she could recover. She's doing much, much better and so can you. Good luck to all!
I wrote about LERD but I really meant LPR Laryngopharangeal Reflux Disease. I am really sorry for the confusion.
Hi,
I am 47 years old. I am having this odd feeling like a lump in my throat. It is quite uneasy as the feeling keeps coming back from time to time.
I had seen two doctors. First doctor told me it was an inflammation and gave me the antibiotics. It did not work when I finished the medicine.
So I went to see the Chinese Physician. He told me this could be due to stress and anxiety. I am still taking it and hope this could turn out well.
I will keep posted here for any update. Thanks to all for sharing. :-(

i was just sik with a cough and now i feel a small lump when i swallow does annyone know what this is
I'M 34 AND FOR 10 DAYS NOW HAVE BEEN IN THE ER 3 TIMES EACH TIME THEY JUST GIVE ME STEROID SHOTS AND A BOOSTER OF ANTIBIOTICS. I TO FEEL LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING STUCK IN MY THROAT BUT CAN'T QUITE REACH IT AND IT DOESN'T MOVE ALSO CAN'T SWALLOW OR EAT ANYTHING IN DAYS BECAUSE OF IT. SO FAR I'VE BEEN TOLD BY DOCTOR THAT I MIGHT NEED TO HAVE TONSILLECTOMY. I HAVE FOUND SIMILAR SYMPTOMS IN THROAT CANCER BUT I OPT TO THINK OF TONSILLECTOMY IT'S LESS FRIGHTNING. YOU NEED TO GOTO A EAR NOSE THROAT DOCTOR THAT'S THE ONLY DOCTOR I WAS TOLD THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO HELP. I HOPE EVERYTHING FOR YOU IS ALRIGHT AND IT'S JUST NOTHING. TAKE CARE
I am having this problem right now......about5 to 6 times a day, a lump will appear in my throat and it is almost gagging at times, and I swallow time and time and time again, but it won't disappear until it's good and ready. Then in time it will rear it's ugly head again. My doctor is giving me Zantac because she says it's probably reflux but I don't have any heartburn or indigestion, it's just the lump itself that's a real bother. My throat is also sore on one side so I might pursue another visit to her for a throat culture to rule out strep. Strep I do believe can cause the object in your throat that hangs to swell up and that would feel as if an object is stuck in your throat as well. I just wish they had one answer for each problem instead of 1000 answers for each problem. They're the doctors, we're not.
Hi there
Having almost similar symptoms with most of guys here and trying to get as more informations as I could,I came to a conclusion that the"lump"feeling at the back of throat is related only to postnasal drip not allergies. Its mucus, thin or thick that drains from the nose towards your throat. When mucus is thick,it may stay there and you feel the need to clear the throat to get rid of it,which eventually seems to help, but does not bring eny relief.Sometimes mucus is green and smelly.Especially in the mornings I feel it mostly, perhaps because mucus stays in there all night and gets even drier, unless a humidifier is used.It comes out as pleghm, easily after a hot bath, steam inhalation or humidifiers are used.Worth saying that diary products(milk, yoghurt, cheese, butter, etc)make the mucus thicker and therefore give you hard time to clear it.
In my case I have mucus overproduction and a fractured nose(not straight)which was thought to be the cause, and a mini-surgery was needed to correct the problem as well as reduce the mucus production.Which I did not get involved into.
Symptoms I have are not accompanied by fever, allergies or any pains(except sometimes a dull headache pain). The only"hassle"is the constant throat clearing and swallowing.
I wonder is someone has a similar diagnosis and any effective treatment?
Tony

feeling of lump in back of throat could be caused by tonsilloliths...
this site explains what they are.

I've been reading all of the comments on the feeling of a lump in the throat, I have had a similar concern over the past 6 months. I have seen a ENT specialist that told me that there is nothing wrong with me but schedueled a CT scan for peace of mind. It showed nothing. Then I went for a second opinion to another ENT specialist and he told me I had tonsil liths and one of them is lodged in my lymph node on the left side of my throat. I am lucky to have good insurance so I have seen him a couple times since and he keeps confirming that my problem is tonsil liths. He told me that we have hundreds of lymps around our neck and throat and they can swell independantly for any reason. Germs etc. and they do not necessarily happen only when you have a cold becasue the natureal defense of the lymph node its to over activate in the presence of germs so often times the swelling kills the germs and you don't get the cold you might have gotten. Who knows, maybe it's your lymph nodes. If I press on mine it gets sore and larger, I can feel it on the ouside of my throat.
