I can't stand the feeling anymore! do I have throat cancer?

I'm 19 and have smoked for about 3 years. Is it possible? :-(

Most common cause of the sensation of a lump in your throat is allergies or irritation from acid reflux. I'm 22 years old and this happens to me for a few weeks every change of season. If it gets really annoying, I just sip on water and it helps to relieve it for a bit. Obviously nothing to freak out over, if it's not gone in a month or two, check in with the doc to make sure it's not some throat spasm, and don't freak out about it being cancer, your lymph's would be hella swollen for a long time.

I also have this same problem. My throat on the left side all the way to my ear hurts very bad. ( feels like a large lump)...I got on this site after doing research, I too thought throat cancer and had myself extremely worried. Did anyone else recently fly? My symptoms occured literally 15 minutes after arriving home from a trip. I had a stopover bothways and I think the pressure did something to my eardrums. Please advise

I have the same feeling. It only comes on when my allergies flare up. It's a muggy day today and the air quality is poor - usually stirs up this problem. When I cough, it clears it up for a bit and I've found if I drink a lot of water throughout the day it helps minimize it. I take Mucinex and that helps as well - thinning out the mucus. I figure it might be a post nasal drip issue too.

Hi. I wish a doctor would come on this site and comment on all of this. It would really help!

I too have had a lump in my throat and I can feel saliva dribbling down over it. Feels yuk. Doctor said Reflux or Gerd. Wine and Coke and V drinks certainly dont help it. Its driving me crazy as I keep thinking I have throat cancer. Although it was good to read all of your comments and to know that there are other causes or non. Interestingly enough I DO suffer from GADD, (Generalized Anxiety Dissorder) and thats also what my doctor said it could be. Great. Still doesn't help. Anyway now I am going to go to the Ear Nose and Throat Specialist to see what happens. Also my nymph nodes on the right side of my neck are up and have been for about a year. Same side as I feel the lump thing. Also sometimes I get a pain just under the bottem middle of my chest. I went on Losec for relux but that just gave me huge abdominal pain, so came off it.

Please can a Doctor come on this site and answer some of our questions and maybe put our minds to rest.

Hey everyone. I know this topic is old, but for anyone else who stumbles upon it.....

I don't know what the clicking sensation is. I have that, too, on one side just under my jaw and can feel it sometimes when I swallow, but I suspect it's caused by allergies, since they've been really bad this year and my sinuses are draining a lot.

However, for those who have the sensation of an obstruction, particularly lower down in the throat - like you might have a fish bone stuck down there, have your thyroid checked. It's a simple blood test. What happens is, if your thyroid is out of balance (underactive or overactive) your thyroid gland enlarges (this is called a goiter) and puts pressure on both your esophagus and windpipe, causing the VERY unpleasant sensation of feeling like there's an obstruction, or a choking feeling. This is how I found out I had hypothyroidism, when this symptom appeared. Your doctor will even be able to tell by feeling your throat if it's enlarged. It's quite a common disorder, particularly in women, and many go undiagnosed.

Too many sites try to scare people with the big "C" word, but chances are it's the thyroid, or some sore of throat infection or sinus issue. Hope this helps some.

I have a painful lump on the right side of my throat. This all started 4 months ago with a slight pain in my left side of my throat, after a night of a few wines I awakened with the sore throat on the other side, this was like swollen glands. It eventually got sorer, to swallow solids and liquids is so painful. The gland feels hard to touch and sore. I got anti biotics they didnt work. Went back to doctors and he has refered me to ENT clinic, my appointment is in 4 months, I cannot wait this long as the pain is so bad. I have an under active thyroid, I got bloods taken so I will find the results next week. I cant take the pain, worry and stress. I am worrying myself into a wreck. I think I will just go up to ER.

When ypu talk about the lumps you are expericing are they painful?
Thanks for any help.

Hi. I happened to be online just now and got an update on your post. Lump where? Under your jawline? Or at the lower area of your throat/neck, where the thyroid is? When I got my thyroid episode the first time, there wasn't pain, just extreme discomfort. I'm not a doctor, but I've had all sorts of throat problems and infections. If it's the glands under your jawline that you're talking about, that does sound like an infection or virus, because I've had those get swollen and hurt quite a lot before. Your doctor is an insensitive lout if he is making you go through this, waiting months for an appointment elsewhere, and not at least letting you try a different antibiotic or anti-viral or pain killer. If it were me, I'd make myself an appointment with a different doctor as soon as you can. If the pain is THAT bad, then yeah, maybe the ER just to get some relief. But try not to worry. Often small things (like infections, allergies and so forth) can cause big pain. In the meantime, try lemon juice, lemon tea, gargling with salt, maybe applying a heating pad to the area (or cold, if it seems like that would feel better). If you have bad allergies and think it might be related to that, maybe try a pseudoephedrin (sp?) decongestant syrup. You know, the cough syrups they used to have that actually worked, but now are hidden behind the pharmacy counter? Maybe would help some till you get to a good doctor. I'm assuming you do mean the glands higher up in the throat, though, when I suggest this stuff.

Just wondering, do you regularly drink wine? Like, every day? I ask because you said this first started after consuming wine.... Wines have sulfates in them that some people can react to. I know that's a long-shot, but seemed worth bringing up. :-)

Thank you for your advise. The doctor rushed my ENT appointment through for me and I was lucky to get a cancellation. I Had a camera put down my nose into my throat and was told that I was suffering from acid refulx. I had no symptons of heart burn or acid, so I thought that was very strange. There was no lumps or masses visible, only irritation. I am on medication for 3 months to help with the acid and if this works will then continue on this medication, if it does not work then I will go back for further investigation. I have to change my eating habits e.g. cut out all fats and acidic foods, it will be a life style change.
The lump in my throat has moved again and now it is central to my throat, but still painful. I drink plenty of water which helps. Wine is a no no, I do not drink that much barely anything, and the night after I had wine the pain was worse. I did have lots of wine that night!! When I think of it wine is very acidic.
I will just wait now and hope the meds work. Thank you for taking the time to write back to me, as I was worrying endlessly about my throat pain.
